Pseudo-tandem stenosis of the internal carotid artery.

Two cases of pseudo-tandem stenosis of the internal carotid artery are presented. Proximal stenosis was produced by a large, focal atherosclerotic plaque. The severe intracranial "stenosis" was thought to be an angiographic artifact. Repeat cerebral angiography after carotid endarterectomy revealed normal intracranial arteries. The recognition of this entity is important because a decision to operate is based largely upon angiographic findings.

Biochemical applications of chemically induced nuclear polarization in phenols, peptides, catecholamines and related molecules.

A photochemical method for producing proton nuclear polarization in phenolic biogenic molecules such as tyrosyl polypeptides and phenolic amines is described. The nuclear polarization is due to the reversible hydrogen-atom transfer from the phenolic hydroxy group to triplet photoexcited xanthene-dye molecules. Typical results obtained with insulin, catecholamines and other phenolic molecules are treated in detail.

Saliva lithium concentrations in the management of lithium therapy.

To define conditions under which saliva lithium carbonate concentrations can be used as a guide in lithium therapy, serum (Cp) and saliva (Cs) concentrations were determined simultaneously under different circumstances in 12 patients receiving lithium, and the effect of seven variables for example, (sex, saliva flow rate) on the Cp:Cs ratio was examined. The average ratio was 0.57 if saliva was collected in the morning before breakfast and 0.45 otherwise. The Cp:Cs ratio was found to vary much more between individuals than within an individual. We propose a method that minimizes the effect of the interindividual variation on the error in the prediction of Cp from Cs by using one or two measured Cp:Cs ratios to adjust the individual ratio. Using this technique the Cs may be useful as a predictor of the Cp in monitoring lithium therapy.

Magnesium levels in patients with chronic ischemic heart disease.

Serum magnesium was measured in 89 control subjects ages 19 to 86 years and in 64 patients (ages 35 to 82 years) who had suffered from acute myocardial infarction at least 6 months previously. No differences were found in the serum magnesium levels due to age or sex nor was there any statistical difference between the mean levels in the two groups. It is concluded that the level of serum magnesium is not associated with the presence or absence of clinically evident ischemic heart disease.

Changes in drug usage and associated personality traits among college students.

This study was designed to determine if the trend toward stability of drug usage among college students has continued and to reexamine the relationship between six personality factors and drug usage which had been found in an earlier study. Results indicated that drug use has leveled off, although a relatively minor increase in marijuana use was noted. Results also indicated that four of the six personality factors remained moderately good predictors of drug usage. The implications of the findings that two of the factors were no longer predictive of drug usage were discussed.

Sexual potency following surgery for rectal carcinoma. A followup of 44 patients.

Of 157 patients operated upon for cancer of the rectum within the last 10 years, 44 were available for a followup study of sexual potency. After the anterior resection operation, sexual function for both men and women remained practically unchanged. Following the abdominoperineal operation, where the entire rectum was extirpated, the results differed for men and women. Sexual function in men was completely destroyed, but women were capable of continuing sexual enjoyment as before the operation. Anterior resection in both sexes, i.e., leaving 6 cm of the distal rectum, does not destroy nerve fibers or other structures vital to continuing normal sex activity. However, the abdominoperineal operation in men destroys the important parasympathetic fibers to the male genital system and renders the patient impotent. In women, the abdominoperineal operation for cancer spares most of the nerve supply, especially the important pudendal nerve, thus permitting the patient to continue sexual activity as before surgery.

Suprasellar subarachnoid cysts.

Suprasellar subarachnoid cysts are rare entities that should be included in the differential diagnosis of parasellar masses. Five new cases are reported and the literature reviewed.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum revealed by computerized tomography.

Computerized tomography is a new, safe, non-invasive method of diagnosing intracranial disorders. It has been used in the detection of intracranial tumors, hydrocephalus, hemorrhages, atrophy, abscesses and subdural hematomata. Two cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum are presented, in which the diagnosis was made or confirmed by computerized tomography. The embryology, clinical course and radiological aspects of the disorder are reviewed.

The sella turcica in Nelson's syndrome.

Abnormalities of the pituitary fossa were observed in 22 patients who were noted to have increased skin pigmentation after bilateral adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome. Radiographs of the skull revealed sella abnormalities in 13 of the 22 patients. In the remaining 9, hypocycloidal tomography demonstrated sella abnormalities. In 8 of these 9, localized bulging involved the anterior inferior wall of the sella turcica; in 1, the posterior inferior region was involved.
