Plasmacytomas of the NZB mouse.

Plasmacytomas were readily induced in NZB mice by three i.p. inoculations with pristane (2, 6, 10, 14-tetramethylpentadecane). In comparison with comparable induction regimens in BALB/c mice a) the latent period for plasmacytoma development was significantly longer in NZB's; b) the frequency of IgA paraproteins produced by NZB tumors was much reduced and that of IgG (IgG1, IgG2a, IgG2b, IgG3Y was significantly increased; and c) the frequency of carbohydrate-binding paraproteins was 10-fold lower. There was a high frequency of primary ascites containing more than one paraprotein, but none of 25 such tumors produced more than one immunoglobulin class on serial transplantation.

[Experimental experience with autologous nerve-transplantation in rabbits (author's transl)].

Autologous nerve transplantations of the tibial nerve were carried out in 15 rabbits. In an average period of 19 weeks a return of function could be observed in 13 of the animals. Neuro-physiological, histological and scanning-electron microscopic examinations were done. A comparison was performed with results after simple nerve suture, done under equal circumstances. Nerve suture leads to a relative better regeneration. To explain this result the formation of a scar in the distal suture was discussed.

The influence of electric potentials on plated bones.

Twenty-seven rabbits were treated with bilateral tibial osteotomy and compression plates. One tibia in each animal received three to 15 microamperes constant direct current for 21 days. The breaking strengths of the stimulated tibiae were higher in 19 animals, as compared to controls (70.4% stimulation rate). The mean value of the additional maximum stress to break the stimulated tibiae was 0.73 kg. Fifteen other rabbits were similarly treated but with electrical stimulation being applied to only one tibia in each animal. There was an increase in endosteal and periosteal callus formation and greater vascularization on microangiography of the callus and the stimulated side. The fissure gap at the osteotomy site was smaller, and bone in the fissure was mature lamellar bone only on the stimulated side. The uptake of fluochromes was greater on the stimulated than control untreated side. Both tibiae in each of five rabbits were doubly fixed with compression plates. A simulated piezoelectric potential was applied to one tibia in each animal. There was a 20 per cent higher calcium and phosphate content of the stress protected cortex, as well as an increased uptake of fluorochormes, in the stimulated tibia as compared to that of the control tibia in three out of five of the animals.

Genetics of mouse antibodies. II. Recombination between VH genes and allotype.

The BAB/14 (BALB/c. C57BL/Ka-Ig-1b/HZ) congenic mouse strain was found to respond to (4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl)acetyl (NP)-chicken globulin immunization with nonheteroclitic anti-NP antibodies as does the BALB/c inbred partner strain. This is in contrast to the heteroclitic anti-NP response of the C57BL/Ka allotype donor strain and indicates that the allotype linked VH-NP gene was inherited with the VH-DEX gene from BALB/C rather than with the allotype genes from C57BL/Ka. This verifies the interpretation of BAB/14 as an immunoglobulin gene recombinant. Two recombinants between VH-DEX and Ig-1 allogype genes have been found among 554 chromosomes tested yielding a recombination frequency of 0.4%. Analysis of the BAB/14 recombinant showed that this crossover occurred between VH genes implying that VH genes and CH genes are not organized in separate clusters separated by a larger spacer region but are contiguous. Analysis of the recombination frequencies indicates that the total number of VH genes must be at least 50.

[The speed of nerve-conduction after micro-surgical suture of the tibial nerve of the rabbit (author's transl)].

Isolated division of the tibial nerve in the thigh preserving the peroneal and sural nerves does not cause loss of normal position of the animal, in particular of sitting. Nor does it lead to pressure sores. The animals are fitter then after division of the sciatic nerve. Microsurgical suture of the isolated tibial nerve in the thigh of the rabbit with 1 or 2 simple sutures with 10 x 0 thread show that an average recovery can be achieved in over 80 per cent. As few sutures as possible should be used. Otherwise there with be scarring and no return of function.
