A glycoprotein antigen has been isolated from cured tobacco leaves (TGP-L) Nicotiana tabacum) and from cigarette smoke condensate (TGP-CSC) to which approximately one-third of human volunteers, smokers and non-smokers, exhibit immediate cutaneous hypersensitivity. TGP-L and TGP-CSC contain polyphenol haptens that activate the factor XII (Hageman factor) dependent pathways of coagulation, fibrinolysis, and kinin generation in normal human plasma. The purpose of this communication is to describe the isolation antigens from cocoa powder (Theobroma cacao), ground coffee (Coffea arabica), and ragweed (Ambrosia eliator) pollen that are immunologically cross-reactive with TGP-L and TGP-CSC, contain similar polyphenol haptens, and are capable of activating factor-XII-dependent pathways in normal human plasma.

A practically complete destruction of both femoral heads including the femoral necks and acetabula was encountered in a 69-year-old patient with diabetes, which varied in intensity. This destruction, documented by radiographs which had been taken 8 years prior, had started as the typical picture of "idiopathic femoral head necrosis". In addition to diabetes, hyperuricemia and hyperlipoproteinemia were present at the time when the femoral head necrosis was first evidenced. One episode of gout was recorded. In recent years, following therapy, the hyperurecemia and hyperlipoproteinemia had normalized. The question is raised, as to whether or not the present radiological findings represent a complication of aseptic femoral head necrosis, combined with a diabetic arthropathy of the hip joints. Details of the angiographic findings and a spondylopathy, which have all the characteristics of a neuropathic spondylopathy, would favor this hypothesis. When associated with a diabetic condition, generalized osteoporosis and hypertrophic spondylosis of such a particular nature require special mention.
The ultrastructural location of the group-specific polysaccharide and the type-specific protein antigens R and X of group B streptococci was studied by means of the direct immunoferritin technique. The group-specific antigen was located on the outer wall layer. The specificity of the reaction was proved by the inhibition of labelling after absorption of the antibody-ferritin conjugate with group B polysaccharide. On the other hand, the demonstration of the polysaccharide was not sterically hindered by protein type antigens. As with group A and C streptococci the group polysaccharide could be localized on both the outer and inner surfaces of isolated walls. The protein antigens R and X were also demonstrated on the wall surface. The specificity of the reaction was ensured by making use of the enzymic sensitivity of these antigens. The location of the R protein on long filaments protruding from the cell surface resembles that of M protein of group A streptococci. In contrast to the group polysaccharide both the R and X protein antigens are localized only on the outer surface of isolated walls.
The ultrastructural locations of the group-specific polysaccharide and the type-specific polysaccharides Ia, Ib, II and III of group B streptococci (Streptococcus agalactiae) were studied on isolated walls by the direct immunoferritin technique. The type polysaccharides were located exclusively on the outer side of the wall on which they formed a distinct capsule. Except for strain 58/59 (type Ia) the thickness of the capsule was characteristic of each strain investigated. In all strains the type-specific ferritin labelling was confined to the outer surface of the capsule. The group-specific polysaccharide could be demonstrated on the inner surface in all strains tested. It could also be demonstrated on the outer surface in strains 59/59 (type Ib) and 8/66 (group B variant) and on most of the walls of strain 58/59 (type Ia). The failure to detect this antigen on the outer side of the walls of strains 60/59 (type II) and 13/63 (type III) and on some walls of strain 58/59 was probably due to the thickness of the type polysaccharide capsule.
The acute and chronic circulatory effects of a new beta adrenergic blocking drug, dl-1-(2,5-dichlorophenoxy)-3-tertiary-butylamino-2-propanol hydrochloride, GYKI-41099, have been assessed in patients with hyperkinetic circulation/or mild hypertension. The acute effects of GYKI-41099 2.5, 5 and 10 mg have been compared with those of propranolol 10, 20 and 40 mg using a cross-over design in 18 patients with elevated cardiac index. Each dose of both drugs produced a significant reduction in sitting and exercise heart rate. The potency of GYKI-41099 compared with propranolol proved to be 3:1. 13 patients with hyperkinetic circulation on GYKI-41099 5-15 mg daily for 2 months exhibited a significant reduction in resting heart rate and cardiac index. In 13 patients with mild hypertension the drug exerted marked antihypertensive effect. Side effects were minimal and short-lived.
Our experience with modulated energy proton beams in the definitive treatment of cancer patients indicates that, for the patients accepted, treatment volumes have been smaller and total doses higher than would have obtained for photon techniques alone used in our institution. The reactions of normal tissue have, with very few exceptions, been readily acceptable. The higher radiation doses employed should yield higher tumor control frequencies. Clearly, we cannot assess the efficacy of this modality because of the small number of patients followed for short periods. However, the results are judged by use to warrant intensive evaluation of this modality.

The toxicity of the chemical radioprotection substance WR 2721 (S-2-(3-aminopropylamino)ethyl-thiophosphate) was examined in 25 beagles. The study showed that the toxicity of the substance increases as the dose gets higher. Between the doses 200 and 250 mg/kg of body weight, the increase of toxicity was significantly greater than could be expected on the basis of the dose difference. Until a dose of 200 mg/kg, the authors found no side effects which would have disturbed vital functions, but higher doses led to marked symptoms of intoxication.
In a 48-year old man, ossification was seen in the right achilles tendon which was to be interpreted as due to surgical extension of tendon in childhood following operation of talipes equinus. Only few reports have been published in literature, but in these, the x-ray findings were largely identical, and in all cases except one, injuries of the tendon or operations had preceded the condition. Ossification is associated with mild complaints only. It presents a typical pattern of x-ray findings distinguishing it from tendon ossifications or calcifications of other origin.

The immunohistology of the antibody synthesis against M proteins of Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococci) was studied in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). For the immunoelectron microscopic detection of antibody producing cells peroxidase-labelled M protein was used. Cryostat sections of glutaraldehyde-fixed lymphoid organs were incubated with the peroxidase-conjugate followed by 3,3'-diaminobenzidine and H2O2. The labelled tissue sections were further processed for the electron microscopy. Two sites of specific labelling were observed: 1) The cell membrane of lymphocytes and transformed lymphocytes and 2) the endoplasmic reticulum of plasma cells, proplasmocytes and transformed lymphocytes.
The immunoelectron microscopy employs the specificity of antibodies for the ultrastructural detection of cell and virus components that bear antigenic determinants. Electron dense marker molecules or cytochemical reagents for enzymes are employed as detectors to visualize the antigen-antibody reaction. One group of methods uses covalent binding of the marker molecule or enzyme to the antibody by means of bifunctional reagents. More recently, it has been found that specificity and sensitivity are enhanced of only unlabelled antibodies are used in procedures in which the detector is attached to antibody via immunological bonds only. The review describes the different immunoelectron microscopical methods and the possibilities of their application.

Our experience with primary tendon repair in no-man's-land are reported. 25 patients with 28 tendon lesions were treated in our service since 1974. In 2/3 of the cases a good functional result was obtained. This technique can also be recommended for replantation cases and complex injuries. A clear indication, consequent postoperative treatment and the avoidance of technical failures result in less complications and postoperative problems.
A combined traumatism adversely affects radiation disease. Therefore it was of interest to investigate what influence exerts a combined lesion on an existing immunity state. After whole-body irradiation alone as well as after combined irradiation and traumatism, no significant decrease of the antibody level was found in rabbits which had been infected with vaccina virus Elstree four weeks before the irradiation. The conclusion seems justified that patients submitted to a therapeutic immunosuppression have to be vaccinated against dangerous virus infections before and that a natural immunity or an immunity induced by vaccination cannot be destroyed even by an accident involving a high radiation exposure.
Compared intellectually delayed and primary reading disabled children (N = 64) in respect to WISC-R Verbal-Performance IQ differences and subtest scores on the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests. First, it was found that the two groups did not differ in respect to overall mean Verbal-Performance IQ differences or in the percentage of children who showed particular directional patterns. Second, the two groups demonstrated more similarities than differences on Woodcock subtest scores. The importance of these findings for the assessment of children's reading problems was discussed.
