A simplified monitoring method of 125I in liquid waste was devised. The waste water of 200 cm3 was taken on a Saran (polyvinylidene chloride) film covering a stainless steel vat. A stable iodine (20 mg) and sodium hydroxide (1 mmol) was added. The water was evaporated using an infra-red lamp. After heating to dryness, the Saran film was folded and transferred into a polyethylene tube. The radioactivity of 125I was counted with a well type NaI(Tl) scintillation counter. When a multi-channel analyzer was available for counting, an absolute decay rate of 125I was calculated with single and sum photo-peak counts. The radioactivity of 125I counted by a single-channel counter must be corrected with the counting efficiency of about 55%, with a special emphasis of a self absorption of photons. The recovery of 125I for concentrations below the permissible level was more than 98%.

Intestinal metaplasia (IM) in the glandular stomach of male Wistar rats induced by oral administration of N-ethyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (ENNG) and/or intubation of 0.1N sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was studied as follows. Experiment I, sequential study: Rats in group I were given 100 micrograms/ml ENNG in drinking water for 12 weeks. Rats in group II were given 5 ml of 0.1N NaOH by gastric intubation once a week for 12 weeks. Group III control rats were given tap water. Rats were killed from week 1 until week 69 sequentially. IM was first found at week 26 in group I and at week 58 in groups II and III, its incidence being significantly higher in group I than in the other two groups (P less than 0.01), but without any difference between group II and group III. Experiment II, two-stage carcinogenesis: Rats in groups I and II were treated in the same way as in experiment I, while rats in group III were given 100 micrograms/ml ENNG for 12 weeks, followed by 0.1N NaOH once a week for 12 weeks intragastrically. All rats were killed at week 56. The numbers of metaplastic glands in groups I and III were higher than in group II. Gastric carcinomas were induced in all groups of rats treated with ENNG. The results of these two experiments show that IM is effectively induced by a carcinogen but is not enhanced by regeneration induced by alkaline treatment.
Sex chromosome abnormalities in human stomach and lung cancers from 33 male patients were examined by Southern blot hybridization with pDP34 DNA probe, which recognizes X and Y chromosome-linked restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs). Contrary to the recent cytogenetic observations showing high incidence of loss of the Y chromosome in solid tumors, loss of the Y chromosome was observed in only 3 of 21 stomach cancers and 2 of 12 lung cancers. Gain of the Y chromosome was found in one of 12 lung cancers, but not in any of the stomach cancers. No X chromosome abnormality was found in any of these 33 stomach cancers and lung cancers.

Reexamination of conditions for processing and storing blood for plasma renin assay confirmed that plasma can be stored at -20 degrees C for at least 4 weeks without significant changes in active renin level. The active renin concentration is increased by storage at 4 degrees C because of conversion from inactive renin.
A newly isolated and characterized chicken luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-II (chicken LH-RH-II, Miyamoto et al., 1984) had luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) releasing activity in vitro and in vivo in Japanese quail: the activity was almost equal to chicken LH-RH-I and mammalian LH-RH. These three LH-RHs induced the release of LH several times higher than that of FSH in vitro and also in vivo. No significant difference between chicken LH-RH-I and LH-RH-II was observed in LH releasing activity in vitro using chicken pituitary gland in the same incubating condition as in quail. Another experiment indicated that no synergism existed between chicken LH-RH-I and -II and that there was neither LH nor FSH releasing activity in [D-Phe2, Pro3, D-Phe6]-LH-RH or in mesotocin. However, the same potency as in the chicken LH-RH-II was observed in [D-Ala6, des-Gly10]-LH-RH ethylamide, a superactive analog in mammals. The results indicate that an avian adenohypophysis differs from a mammalian adenohypophysis in its responsiveness to LH-RH suggesting that an avian LH-RH receptor may have a lower specificity in "recognition" of LH-RH molecules than a mammalian LH-RH receptor has.
The gene hupB encoding the HU-1(HU beta) protein of Escherichia coli was mapped between proC at min 9 and minA at min 10 on the K-12 genome by plasmid integration and chromosome transfer studies. Genetic studies using plasmid rescue techniques demonstrated that the lon gene is located very close to the 5' end of hupB and that the two genes are both transcribed clockwise on the E. coli map [Bachmann, Microbiol. Rev. 47 (1983) 180-230].
Seventeen normal term infants delivered at the Jikei University School of Medicine were placed daily on a pedoscope in the supine and prone position after birth, and the movement of the gravity center and changes in the activities of the extremities were assessed. The results indicated that both the activity of the extremities and the movement of the gravity center were sluggish after birth, that both increased to reach peaks within 1 to 3 days, and that then temporary decreases occurred before they increased again. The probable reason for the temporary decrease in activity may be habituation or a decrement in the infant, and it is also presumed that the increase in activity after the transitory decrease reflects natural development.
The relationship between changes in glucose tolerance with treatment of hyperthyroidism and various factors that might be relevant to carbohydrate metabolism were investigated in 64 hyperthyroid patients with abnormal glucose tolerance, including 35 cases with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels of 140 mg/dl or more. All patients had diffuse toxic goiter. After correction of the hyperthyroidism, glucose intolerance improved in almost all cases, even in cases with fasting hyperglycemia, but diabetes mellitus in patients with FPG above 140 mg/dl and/or delta IRI/delta PG X 30' during a 50-g oral glucose tolerance test below 0.10, persisted. Patients who showed diabetic glucose tolerance even after remission from thyroid dysfunction had significantly lower delta IRI/delta PG X 30' values and a higher incidence of family histories of diabetes mellitus than those not showing diabetic glucose tolerance. There were no significant differences in serum T3 and T4 levels between these two groups of patients. The findings suggest that predisposition to diabetes may be an important factor in persistent glucose intolerance in the hyperthyroidism of Graves' disease. The FPG and delta IRI/delta PG X 30' values may be useful in predicting which patients with hyperthyroidism will have permanent diabetes.
The cellular concentrations of ppGpp in the dnaK(Ts) and dnaJ(Ts) mutants of Escherichia coli were examined, since the thermosensitive RNA synthesis of these mutants is relaxed by an additional mutation in the relA gene. The results showed that ppGpp accumulated extensively in the dnaK(Ts) and dnaJ(Ts) mutants after a temperature shift up, reaching levels of 5 mM and 0.5 mM, respectively. This unusual accumulation of ppGpp was suppressed by the relA1 mutation, implying that it results from induction of a stringent response in these mutants at a nonpermissive temperature.
