IUD insertions by midwives: five years' experience in Santiago, Chile.

This report includes data on insertions of Lippes Loop D, Copper-7, and Copper-T intrauterine devices (IUDs) performed by certified nurse-midwives and physicians with comparable levels of training and experience in inserting IUDs. Net 1-year pregnancy, expulsion, and removal rates were used to compare the experiences of the 2 groups. There were no significant differences between the groups in most of the event rates or in the overall method discontinuation rates. The authors conclude that, with adequate training and experience, nurse-midwives can provide this family planning service with no additional risk to patients.

Neuroectodermal tumours in the cerebellum in two sisters.

Two sisters, one 5 years and the other 2 years old, with intrinsic tumours of the cerebellum are reported. One of the tumours was interpreted as being a ganglioneuroma with neuroblastomatous change. The other was a desmoplastic medulloblastoma.

Coronary xeroradiography.

Xeroradiography is shown to be especially helpful in coronary arteriography. Comparatively low concentrations of contrast medium are sufficient to provide adequate diagnostic details in the image. Selection injection techniques yield exceptional resolution of small vessels. The possibility of obtaining adequate coronary arteriograms by aortic root injections, with its inherently lower risk to the patient, is examined.

The antigenicity of soluble porcine elastins: I. Measurement of antibody by a radioimmunoassay.

Immunization of rabbits with either porcine tropoelastin, lung alpha-elastin, or aortic alpha-elastin resulted in the production of antibodies against the respective antigens. The assay of antibody activity with a radioimmunoassay indicated a high degree of cross reactivity between these three soluble elastin preparations. Through the use of competitive protein binding experiments it was possible to detect antigen-specific differences between tropoelastin and the two alpha-elastins. No antigenic differences were observed between lung or aortic alpha-elastin by any of the assay procedures uded in this investigation. Absorption of the various antisera with either insolubilized tropoelastin, lung elastin or aortic elastin allowed the preparation of non-crossreactive antibodies and provided further evidence for the antigenic differences between tropoelastin and the soluble alpha-elastins. The implications of the findings, as they relate to our current understanding of the molecular and structural arrangement of elastin and the elastin precursor, are discussed.
