Labor was successfully induced or stimulated with intravenous Prostaglandin E2 (0.1-2.0 microgram/min) in a group of twenty-nine hypertensive gravidae at 36-41 weeks' gestation. No adverse maternal or perinatal effects of the drug were recorded.
Contraception with Lippes Loop D was compared in 1 group of women (N 172) who used a spermicidal preparation with intercourse and a second group (N 190) who used no spermicidal preparation. In the group with a Lippes Loop and a spermicidal preparation, there were 1.2% unplanned pregnancies compared to 6.4% unplanned pregnancies without spermicidal preparation. This combined method approaches the reliability of oral contraception. The third group of women who used a spermicidal preparation erratically is not comparable in the statistical sense to the other two groups. However in this third group there were less unwanted pregnancies than in the group without the use of spermicidal preparation.
Neutral steroids in urine were determined quantitatively with gaschromatography on capillary columns in a case of benign hydatidiform mole associated with bilateral theca-lutein cysts. A remarkable finding was the very high levels of 17-hydroxypregnanolone and pregnanetriol, which continued to rise until the 15th day after molar evacuation.
Six parameters related to the release reaction were measured simultaneously in 10 human volunteers prior to the intake of one single dose of 1 g acetylsalicylic acid and 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days alter: deltaE5 with diluted collagen, deltaE10 with Thrombofax and the serotonin-14C release by undiluted and diluted collagen, by Thrombofax and by bovine plasma. The duration of the inhibitory effect varied according to the test used. It was the most prolonged (through the 7th day) if serotonin-14C release by diluted collagen was measured. A systematic investigation of the platelet release reaction in women taking a combined oral contraceptive was also performed. There were no statistically significant differences from a control group. No difference in acetylsalicylic acid sensitivity, measured 24 hours after intake of 1 g of aspirin, could be demonstrated.

A rapid gas chromatographic method for the determination of thiamphenicol in plasma and amniotic fluid is described. The antibiotic is extracted from biological fluids with ethyl acetate and, after concentration of the extract, the trimethylsilyl derivative of the drug is determined by electron-capture gas chromatography using a 63Ni detector. After the intravenous administration of a single dose of 500 mg of thiamphenicol during the first stage of spontaneous labour to clinically normal gravidae at term, transmission of the drug across the placenta was demonstrated by a combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.

A list of prerequisites, essential items of information and definitions applying to studies on induction of labour is presented. It is suggested that their use would permit proper analysis and comparison of results obtained by different investigators.

The long-term effects of elective induction of labor at term by amniotomy and the intravenous infusion of prostaglandin F2alpha were studied in 40 children. No untoward effect of this procedure on the psychomotor development of the children during the first 30 months could be demonstrated.

The concentrations of sex steroid hormones in plasma were determined daily in 14 young adult women, during both a control cycle and a treatment cycle. During the latter a Silastic ring into which 100 or 200 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera) had been incorporated was worn intravaginally. During the treatment cycles, plasma levels of estradiol, progesterone, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone remained within the range observed during the early follicular phase. Testosterone and androstenedione levels did not show any cyclic variation during the treatment cycle; however, the mean levels were decreased by about 25% compared with the over-all plasma levels of the control cycle, whereas dehydroepiandrosterone levels were decreased by about 15%. It is concluded that these Provera-containing Silastic intravaginal rings inhibit ovulation and decrease androgen secretion by the ovaries significantly.

During a 5-year period twin births occurring at the university hospital were investigated for the presence of clinical and biochemical symptoms of intrauterine hypoxia. It appears that intrauterine hypoxia, when detectable, is limited to the second twin. Some factors which may influence the oxygenation of the second twin have been analysed, i.e., the mode of delivery, the time interval between deliveries, and the duration of gestation. No single explanation for the genesis of the hypoxia seems to be valid.
