Differences in active sodium transport through frog skin with various experimental setups.

Four experimental setups for examining active sodium transport by frog skin were examined and compared. They were: (I) a cannula, the interior of which faces the dermis; (II) a cannula, the interior of which faced the epidermis; (III) an Ussing-type chamber without gaskets; and (IV) an Ussing-type chamber with gaskets. The experiments were out in SO4-Ringer's solution. In control saline, the magnitude of the short circuit current (SCC microA/cm2) was in the order: I greater than III greater than II not equal to IV, while the magnitude of skin resistance (RM, k omega . cm2) and potential difference were: II not equal to IV greater than III greater than I. The responses of the skin to amiloride and cadmium varied greatly according to the various setups employed. Amiloride decreased the SCC and increased the RM. The percent differences from the control SCC and RM showed I not equal to IV greater than II and IV not equal to II greater than I, respectively. On the other hand, cadmium increased the SCC and decreased the RM. The orders of percent differences from the control SCC and RM were IV not equal to II greater than I and II not equal to IV greater than I. The effect of calcium gluconate on the active Na transport was also different depending on the various setups used; the responses to epidermal and dermal Ca-gluconate were quite opposite. The above seemingly curious findings are discussed in terms of the ENa, RNa, and R sigma obtained with Helman's Na-free saline method. From the present investigation, it is clear that careful attention should be given to the interpretation of experimental results in active transport studies when various kinds of setups are employed.

[Combination chemotherapy with peplomycin and carboquone (esquinon) for squamous cell carcinoma of the lung].

Eighteen previously untreated patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung were treated with a combination of a new bleomycin derivative, peplomycin and esquinon (PQ). One patient achieved a complete response (5.5%) and 5 patients a partial response (27.8%). Overall response rate was 33.3%. Median survival time of 6 patients with complete and partial response was 54 weeks and that of 12 patients with no change and progressive disease was 15 weeks. Toxicities included nausea and/or vomiting in 89%, fever in 61%, interstitial pneumonitis in 28% and leukopenia in 17%. PQ regimen appears to be effective in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.

Calcified gastric leiomyoma--a case report.

A 62 year-old man was admitted with the chief complaint of a epigastric pain and difficulty of swallowing. Examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract revealed a calcified mass causing a smooth filling defect at the lesser curvature of the cardia. At laparotomy, a localized tumor was detected beneath the serosa of the stomach. The excised tumor was 4 x 4 x 1.6 cm and the pathological diagnosis was calcified leiomyoma probably due to cytoplasmic degeneration. In this paper, details of the case are described and the related literature is reviewed.

Biochemical and biophysical behaviors of plasma albumin. II. Comparison of plasma albumin from normal subjects and nephrotic patients.

Biochemical and biophysical analyses were made to study the properties of serum albumin from nephrotic patients of two types, remissive stage and relapsed state, and the results were compared with those in normal subjects. Two different ion exchange columns were prepared to isolate and purify each albumin sample and the materials eluted through the two columns were identified. The nephrotic elution materials, especially in the state of relapse, were of some difference from those of normal subjects. alpha-Helix contents estimated by circular dichroism spectra were found to be closer to normal albumin in remissive state than in the state of relapse. The binding of fluorescent probe, 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulfonate, to albumin was examined by calculating the binding parameter, the dissociation constant and number of binding sites. The binding parameters were closer to those of normal albumin in remissive stage than the state of relapse.
