Experiments were performed to investigate the effect of age and genotype on brown adipose tissue thermogenesis in Zucker rats. Specific [3H]GDP binding to interscapular brown adipose tissue mitochondria ( IBATM ) was reduced in 14-day-old preobese fa/fa rats and remained lower after weaning. A gene-dosage effect of the recessive fa gene was observed in 8- to 10-wk-old rats in both IBATM [3H]GDP binding and the thermic effect of a balanced meal (50 kJ Complan ), measured by indirect calorimetry. In each case the heterozygote (Fa/fa) group had a value intermediate between those of obese (fa/fa) and the homozygous lean (Fa/Fa) groups. Norepinephrine increased IBATM [3H]GDP binding to similar levels in lean (Fa/fa) and obese (fa/fa) rats and induced similar increases in oxygen consumption in Fa/Fa, Fa/fa, and fa/fa rats. It is concluded that the impaired, diet-related brown adipose tissue thermogenesis is closely related to the primary gene defect in the obese rat. This defect may result from misregulation of the autonomic nervous system.
Retrospective evaluation of the results of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and pancreatic ultrasonography in identifying those patients with a normal pancreas and those with a pancreatic abnormality revealed ultrasonography to have an overall accuracy of approximately 73%, whereas ERCP had an 85% accuracy, and both modalities had a combined accuracy of 92%. Both procedures were most accurate in the identification of patients with no disease, and both were least accurate in the identification of patients with chronic pancreatitis.

Five captive elk (cervus canadensis) were immobilized with a mixture of etorphine HC1-acepromazine maleate, and measurements were taken of selected oxygen transport paraments. Heart mass/body mass, hematocrit, hemoglobin, blood volume, mean corpuscular volume and airway resistance were measured and the values compared to other ungulates. It was concluded that the O2 transport system of elk is not as well developed as that in pronghorn but is superior to that found in the goat or ox.

Chronic pyelonephritis, especially that caused by the most common invader E. coli, corresponding satisfactorily to the pathophysiology of the human disease is difficult to reproduce. We have developed a pattern of infection with which we succeeded reliably in producing a chronic E. coli pyelonephritis. This was achieved by inserting a plastic catheter into the renal pelvis. A suspension of E. coli was injected via the catheter into the renal pelvis of 32 rabbits. This pattern of infection takes a chronic progressive course and, in all cases, results in typical macroscopic and histological changes in the kidney. The bacterial excretion in the urine remains unchanged over a period of months. With the experimental procedure described, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of chronic E. coli pyelonephritis can be clearly studied. Drugs currently used on patients can be tested for their effectiveness in long-term application.
Serum autoantibodies were determined in 33 of 60 patients 3 to 24 months following a voluntary vasectomy. The macroscopic spermagglutination test according to the method of Kibrick and the immobilization test according the method of Isojima were used. Agglutination antibodies (titer greater than or equal to 1:2) were found in 55% of the patients with a maximal titer of 1:128. Titers from 1:32 were found in 6% of the cases. Immobilization antibodies (titer greater than or equal to 1:2) were found in 24% of the cases with titer values up to 1:16. There is no correlation between the antibody titers and the time of the vasectomy. There were no clinical indications of autoimmunological disease.

Some sympathomimetic compounds (i.e. BRL37344) increase brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis with minimal cardiac effects. They act through an "atypical" beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR). Since beta-AR responses involve Adenylate Cyclase (AC) activation, we investigate the AC answer to isoproterenol and BRL37344 in rat plasmamembranes of heart (beta 1-ARs) and BAT (atypical beta-ARs). AC dose-response curves were obtained by incubating membrane fractions with different concentrations of isoproterenol and BRL37344 (1 nM-100 microM) at 25 degrees C for 15 min. In our study BRL37344 is 40-times more potent than isoproterenol in stimulating AC activity of BAT (EC50s: BRL37344 = 0.02 microM, isoproterenol = 0.7 microM). Furthermore it is more potent in stimulating BAT AC than heart AC (BRL37344 EC50 ratio heart/BAT = 38). However on BAT membranes, BRL37344 intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA) vs. Isoproterenol is 0.87. Since isoproterenol and BRL37344 show a similar ISA for BAT respiration and lipolysis, we may argue that AC maximal activity is not required for maximal lipolytic and thermogenic responses.
