In organic solvents, 1,3-dimethyl-4-(2,4-dichlorobenzoyl)-5-hydroxypyrazole (DTP) converted chlorophyll a and b extracted from rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L. ;Kinmaze') into pheophytin a and b, respectively. On comparing the chlorophyll-converting activity of DTP to those of acetic, glycolic, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic, monochloroacetic, 2,6-dichlorobenzoic, pyruvic, and dichloroacetic acids, it was demonstrated that DTP induced H(+) into chlorophyll specifically. 5-Hydroxypyrazoles, which seem to be dissociable, converted chlorophyll into pheophytin in vitro. These compounds also induced chlorosis in sedge seedlings (Cyperus serotinus Rottb.), when the seedlings were grown in media containing these compounds. However, 5-hydroxypyrazoles, which seem to be undissociable, and analogs having no hydroxy group caused neither the chlorophyll conversion in vitro nor chlorosis in the seedlings. Chlorosis in barnyardgrass seedlings (Echinochloa crus-galli Beauv. var. oryzicola Ohwi) induced by DTP was reversed by cultivating the seedlings in media containing DTP plus NaOH, KOH, NH(4)OH, Ca(OH)(2), sodium acetate, sodium pyruvate, sodium succinate, or sodium fumarate. Accumulation of the vinyl pheoporphyrin fraction in 4- day-old etiolated radish cotyledons (Raphanus sativus L. ;Minowase 2') was enhanced by incubating the cotyledons with delta-aminolevulinic acid in the dark. However, simultaneous treatment with delta-aminolevulinic acid and DTP reduced accumulation of the fraction and promoted formation of the uro, copro, and protoporphyrin fractions. These results suggest that DTP blocks the synthesis of protochlorophyllide in intact plants and induces consequent chlorosis, and the H(+) -donating activity of DTP might cause the reduction of protochlorophyllide biosynthesis.
Some pharmacological actions of 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-5-methyl-3-phenyl-1H-indazole (FS-32), a newly synthesized indazole derivative, were investigated in comparison with imipramine. FS-32 showed anti-reserpine activity in a dose-dependent manner, whereas imipramine exhibited a bell-shaped dose-response pattern. Catecholaminergic potentiation was demonstrated with FS-32. The results obtained from a norepinephrine potentiation test in vitro suggest that FS-32 may act in a manner qualitatively different from the tricyclic antidepressant. FS-32 produced a definite suppressive effect on isolation-induced fighting without affecting coordinated motor activity and on the duration of afterdischarge elicited by electrical stimulation to the amygdala or the hippocampus without producing a slow wave pattern in the EEG. Similar effects on fighting behavior and the afterdischarge were shown under imipramine with a slight motor incoordination and with a slow wave pattern, respectively. FS-32 produced practically no peripheral anti-cholinergic action, while it antagonized central cholinergic activity. FS-32 tended to produce an increase in chatecholamine content in the brain without MAO or COMT inhibitory activity. Norepinephrine uptake was inhibited by FS-32, but less than by imipramine. These pharmacological properties suggest a potential clinical utility of FS-32 as an antidepressant possessing thymoleptic activities.

Forty-five computed tomographic examinations were performed on 34 patients with diseases of the paranasal sinuses and their adjacent structures. Coronal sections were obtained in addition to transverse axial tomographic sections. Evaluation was made whether CT could provide more informations compared with plain roentgenography and whether there were additional informations on coronal sections. CT showed soft tissue abnormality and its extension to better advantage. Especially, involvement of the orbits, pterygoid fossa, nasopharynx, skull base and brain were shown well. Coronal sections were useful in evaluation of superior and inferior extension of the tumors such as involvement of the superior and inferior orbital walls and skull base as well as intracranial extension. Since CT has the ability to better define the total extent of the lesion, this technique should be added to the conventional roentgenologic techniques preferably with the use of coronal sections.
A new synthesis of desmosterol was described using hyodeoxycholic acid (3alpha,6alpha-dihydroxy-5beta-cholanic acid) as a starting material. Epidesmosterol (3alpha-hydroxycholesta-5,24-diene) was also synthesized for the first time from the same starting material.
