The research was carried out on 64 male rats of the Wistar strain aged between 3 to 4 weeks and of an initial body weight of 150 to 300 g. The observed animals were divided into 4 experimental groups and for each individual group of alcoholized rats there was a separate control group. 40 animals in the experimental group were given 40% of ethyl alcohol in a dose of 3 g/kg body weight throughout a period of 13 days the 1. group, 51 days the II. group, 102 days the III. group and 204 days the IV. group. The last dose of alcohol was given 24 h before they were killed. The macroscopic appearance and the weight of the testicles was determined. The sections of testicles were stained with hematoxyline and eosine with the Azan method according to HEIDEN-HAIN and with Masson's Three-coloured stain. In each group the diemater of the seminal tubules was measured. A gradual decrease in the size and weight of the animal testicles was ascertained together with the prolongation of the duration of alcoholization. On the basis of my own observations one can suggest that, the narrowing of the seminal tubules light is one of the first noticeable results of the negative influence of ethyl alcohol on the gonad. In the microscopic preparations of the testicles of chronically alcoholized animals an inhibition in the spermio- and spermatogenesis, degenerative changes in the periphery of the spermatogenic epithelium were noticed. The intensification of the above described changes were observed to be dependent on the duration period of alcohol intoxication.
The submicroscopic studies of spermatozoa were performed on 40 chronic alcoholics with the period of alcoholism surpassing 15 years (on average 19 years). After a double routine morphological evaluation of semen the electron microscopic studies were made. They revealed the following abnormalities: malformations of the head and nucleus, altered chromatin condensation, abnormalities of the acrosome which was often absent, chaotic arrangement of mitochondria or even their local absence. Double-headed spermatozoa were observed. The hitherto undescribed, in man, "whorls" were frequently observed in the cytoplasm of the head and neck. The dependence of these abnormalities on the length of the period of alcoholism was discussed.

Semen of 40 healthy fertile men aged between 22--44 years was investigated. A triple morphological investigation of the semen was performed in each person. For the ultramicroscopic evaluation the semen specimens were selected according to the quantative criterion of normospermic. The ultrastructure of spermatozoon was described in comphiance with its division into head, neck and tail. The substructure of the axial fibre was separately analyzed. The physiological role of individual organelles of normal spermatozoon in fertilization was discussed.

The semen of 25 chronic alcoholics aged between 28 to 52 years was examined. The period of alcoholism amounted to 15 years the average being 12.3 years. In each person the semen was twice morphologically studied and the ultrastructure of spermatozoa was evaluated. Submicroscopic changes consisted mainly in the abnormal electron density of nuclear chromatin, altered structure of the acrosome and mitochondrial spiral, as well as in more rarely observed disturbed arrangement of fibrils of the axial filament complex. The hitherto non observed structure in human spermatozoon ön the form of single, annular, "whorls" were described. The interdependance between ultrastructural changes of spermatozoa and fertility was discussed.
