Levamisole in a double-blind study: no effect on warts.

Levamisole is reported to restore delayed hypersensitivity, when this is depressed. On the assumption that multiple warts, resistant to local treatment, are indicative of some immune deficiency, we chose levamisole for the treatment of warts. The dose, 150 mg daily in 3 days every second week, was given to 49 patients who had common warts and to 50 patients who had condyloma (venereal warts). After 6 weeks of double-blind study, most of the patients underwent open levamisole treatment. However, the levamisole group failed to show enhanced wart regression compared with the control group. No inter-group difference could be detected as regards change in delayed hypersensitivity after levamisole treatment, when measured by the mantoux response.

Adverse reactions in treatment with lithium carbonate and haloperidol.

Hospital records of 425 patients who had been treated simultaneously with lithium carbonate and haloperidol were examined. Adverse reactions in these patients were the same as in patients given lithium alone or haloperidol alone. None of the patients developed a syndrome resembling that described by others in patients treated with a lithium and haloperidol combination.

What happened later to the lithium babies? A follow-up study of children born without malformations.

The Lithium Baby Register was founded in 1968 to determine the frequency of abnormalities among children born to mothers who were given lithium during the first trimester of pregnancy. Previous studies have revealed an increased frequency of congenital malformations, possibly due to teratogenic action of lithium. The present report is a questionnaire follow-up of the physical and mental development of lithium children who were not malformed at birth. Sixty lithium children were examined; their siblings, who had not been exposed to lithium during fetal life, served as a control group. The data obtained do not reveal any increased frequency of physical or mental anomalies among the lithium children.

Administration of lithium to rats by different routes.

Rats were given identical doses of lithium chloride, 4 mmol/kg body weight/day for 8 days, by different routes. Intraperitoneal administration led to a high serum lithium peak and the development of pronounced polyuria-polydipsia. Subcutaneous administration led to a lower serum peak and the development of less pronounced polyuria-polydipsia. Administration by gastric tube led to a nearly constant serum lithium concentration without any peak and the development of moderate polyuria-polydipsia. Our study shows that the route by which lithium is administered affects the lithium concentration pattern and may influence lithium effects.

[The significance of the serum lithium level for lithium therapy of phasic psychoses (author's transl)].

Lithium is an effective substance for the treatment of frequently recurring manias and depressions. But its use requires some precautionary measures which must be carefully attended to. Thus, the initial dose must be low. Then the serum lithium level must be determined after one week. The best time to take the blood sample is about 12 hours after the last dose of lithium. The dosage is adjusted according to the serum lithium level. Subsequent adjustments are frequently necessary during the first few weeks of treatment until the optimal serum lithium level for the individual patient has been found.

Effect of prolonged thiazide treatment on renal lithium clearance.

Renal lithium clearances were determined after the administration of a small test dose of lithium carbonate in 22 patients when they were on long-term treatment with thiazides and when they were not on such treatment. Thiazide administration led to a 24% reduction in the lithium clearance. Diuretic drugs should be used with caution in patients given lithium treatment, and lithium should be used with caution in patients receiving diuretic treatment.
