Purification of kallikrein from cat submaxillary gland.

Cat submaxillary kallikrein was purified from the water extract of the gland by 50-75% acetone fractionation, DEAE-Sephadex A-50 chromatography, Sephadex G-75 gel filtration and Ampholine isoelectric focusing. The final preparation gave the activities of 1260 KU/mg in vasodilator assay, 24.5 and 11.6 units/mg on BAEE and TAME esterolytic assay, respectively. Trasylol gave only weak inhibitory effect on this kallikrein. The isoelectric points of the kallikrein were in the range pH 4.2-5.0, and this kallikrein seemed to consist of several multiple forms with different pI values, like some other glandular kallikreins. It gave a single protein band in disc electrophoresis, while it migrated in retard and formed a broad one. This may be ascribable to the rich carbohydrate content in the kallikrein.

Sialotonin: vasopressor substance in saliva and submandibular gland of the cat.

1. The large molecular pressor agent, sialotonin, present in cat saliva, has been separated from kallikrein and characterized further. 2. Sialotonin is present in saliva produced by parasympathetic (ch8da) but not in that produced by sympathetic nerve stimulation. After degenerative preganglionic parasympathetic nerve section, both sialotonin and kallikrein disappear completely, or nearly so. Sympathetic nerve section, however, fails to affect the concentration of these substances in chorda saliva. 3. The sialotonin activity is saliva is unaffected by ligation of Wharton's duct for 3--4 days whereas the kallikrein concentration is greatly reduced. 4. Although normally present in chorda saliva, sialotonin cannot be detected in aqueous extracts of the submandibular gland. It is present, however, in extracts of glands which have previously been subjected to prolonged sympathetic nerve stimulation or to ligation of the duct for 3-4 days. 5. The intravenous or close-aterial injection of sialotonin causes marked but brief reductions of blood flow in the submaxillary gland and intestine.

[Paroxystic auto-prosopagnosia and epilepsy. Physio-pathological correlation or chance association?].

A case of isolated, pure and paroxystic auto-prosopagnosia in a young man aged 19 years and 10 months, followed until age 21 years and 6 months, is described. He also exhibited petit-mal seizures since the age of 18 years, these two pathological manifestations being chronologically independent. Clinically, were noted a total absence of hetero-prosopagnosia, color-agnosing agnosia for objects or body scheme disorders. The ophtalmologic examination was totally normal. The psychologie study was performed with the aid of the psychodiagnostic tests of Rorschach, Fuchs, Kataguchi and with the "Symbol-Test" of Roemer, and the result obtained, as well as their psychodynamic meanings are detailed. Disappearance, at the age of 21 years and 6 months, of the auto-prosopagnosia and rarefaction of the petit-mal seizures. In a brief survey of the literature, the author underlines the indisputable scarcity of the isolated and paroxystic forms of auto-prosopagnosia as well as their association with epilepsy.

[Psychodynamic significance and scoring of "profile" and "silhouette" responses to Rorschach test in adults and minors].

"Profile" ou "silhouette" responses are rarely given at the Rorschach-test (4,87% of our 780 adults and minors; i.e. 7,17% for the adults and 2,56% for the minors). In 82% of our adults and in 50% of our minors, they are indicators of avoiding neurotic behaviour; in 18% of our adults and in 50% of our minors, we are dealing with contact difficulties or insufficiency complexes. These responses are generally unique in each Rorschach test. However 42% of our adults and 30% of our minors gave more than one of them. The VIIth plate holds the first place as a "stimulus" for "profile" or "silhouette" responses (46,22% of the adults and 40% of the minors). The other Rorschach-plates are, in a decreasing order: III, II, I, V and VI for the adults and VII, I, II, and IX for the minors. These responses suggested by the interpretation of the free border of the plates, are De-responses; when human beings are seen as wholes the Rorschach symbol will be G; if only their heads are perceived, it will be: D.

Gastric secretion during anaesthesia and its inhibition by metiamide and other drugs.

The histamine H2-receptor antagonist, metiamide, inhibits the acid gastric secretion produced by chloralose-urethane anaesthesia in dogs carrying gastric cannulae chronically. This secretion is also prevented by atropine and hexamethonium. "Spontaneous" gastric secretion of vagal origin in conscious dogs is also blocked by metiamide.

Autonomic nerve stimulation, kallikrein content anc acinar cell granules of the cat's submandibular gland.

The parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves to the submandibular gland of the anaesthetized cat were stimulated under specific conditions. 1. It was possible to decrease the kallikrein (kininogenase) content of the gland by as much as 90-95% by sympathetic nerve stimulation. In such a gland the appearance and concentration of secretory granules in the acinar cells were indistinguishable from an unstimulated gland. 2. Parasympathetic nerve stimulation, in contrast to sympathetic nerve stimulation, whilst having no significant effect on the kininogenase content of the gland, resulted in the disappearance of a great majority of the acinar granules. 3. These results demonstrate that the acinar granules in the submandibular gland of the cat are not a significant source of kallikrein. 4. Our experiments also failed to indicate any obvious correlation between the granules of the demilune cells and the kallikrein content of the gland. 5. The possibility is raised that kallikrein is located in the cells of the striated ducts.

[Severe psychomotor instability in child psychiatry. Hyperkinetic states or psychomotor incontinence].

The pedopsychiatric problem of severe psycho-motoric instabilities of hyperkinetic states, that we prefer to designate as psychomotoric incontinence, is at the origin of great amount of publications of inequal value. After having delimitated the concept of severe psycho-motoric instability (hyperkinetic syndrome or motoric incontinence) and a critical historic review of the problem, the author relates the various clinical aspects with twenty personal cases as example. The clinical and therapeutic experience of the author, the etiology, pathologic antecedents, neuro-psychological and electro-encephalographic data concerning this clinical condition, show that only ameliorations (in 40% of the cases), and not recoveries, are to be expeected.
