Nuclear magnetic resonance in advanced prostate cancer (stage D).

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), a recently developed diagnostic method, has proved to be useful in the study of patients with prostatic disease. The authors report their experience with this technique in 10 cases of advanced prostate cancer (stage D) treated with LH-RH agonists (HOE 766-Buserelin). NMR provided information on the size of the prostate, the invasion of the vesical floor and seminal vesicles and the involvement of the pelvic and retroperitoneal nodes. It was also useful for ruling out metastases in the pelvis and spinal column, and showed an excellent correlation with the bone scan. In 2 untreated cases, NMR was sufficient by itself to diagnose metastatic prostate cancer. However, given the current lack of experience, it is not yet possible to draw conclusions concerning the superiority of this technique over other methods in the diagnosis and staging of prostatic carcinoma.

[Chest radiology in rheumatoid arthritis. A study of 89 patients (author's transl)].

Chronic interstitial pneumonia, necrobiotic nodules and pleural lesions are felt to be extraarticular manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In a prospective study, posteroanterior and lateral chest X-ray films were taken in 89 patients with classical or definite RA (15 male and 74 female), of whom 64 (71.9%) were seropositive. The findings were compared with those of 103 age and sex matched controls. The chest X-rays were blindly evaluated by two of the authors (a pneumologist and a radiologist), and the presence of an interstitial pattern, nodules or pleural lesions was recorded. The following results were obtained: Interstitial pattern, in patients with RA, 5/89 (5.6%), and in controls, 5/103 (4.6%). Pulmonary nodules, in RA, 2/89 (2.2%), and in controls, 2/103 (1.9%). Pleural adhesions, in RA, 32/89 (35.9%), and in controls, 24/103 (23.5%). The results of the present series demonstrate that radiological pulmonary lesions are not more frequent in RA than in controls, similar conclusions having been reached by other authors.

Alterations in the performance, haematology and clinical biochemistry of growing lambs fed with aflatoxin in the diet.

Twenty-three male lambs were fed 2.5 ppm of aflatoxin for 21 days. Thirteen lambs constituted the control group. Twelve lambs given toxin and six from the control group were killed at 21 days. The remaining animals were killed 8 days later. To determine haematological and biochemical parameters, samples of blood were obtained at 0, 7, 14 and 21 days of exposure and at 1, 2, 4 and 8 days after exposure. The most sensitive indicator of intoxication was the reduction in body weight (17 +/- 2.2 kg-1 body wt. in intoxicated lambs and 19.2 +/- 1.8 kg-1 body wt. in the control group: P >> 0.01) and in the average daily weight gain (133 +/- 79 g day-1 in the intoxicated group and 254 +/- 105 g day-1 in the control group; P >> 0.001) from the 14th day onwards. Lambs fed with aflatoxins had relatively smaller liver weights and higher kidney and spleen weights than lambs from the control group. Feeding aflatoxins increased the erythrocyte count and the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and decreased the mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular haemoglobin values. An elevation of the levels of globulins with an increase of the beta and gamma fractions and no variation in total protein and albumin was observed in lambs fed on aflatoxins. Urea levels and the alkaline phosphatase and glutamate dehydrogenase enzymatic activities decreased as a consequence of intoxication, whereas gamma-glutamyl transferase was increased. During the clearance period, haematological values regressed towards basal values, but biochemical parameters remained unchanged. These results suggest that lambs are sensitive to the toxic effects of the aflatoxins and that the determination of zootechnical parameters is a better aid to the diagnosis of intoxication than haematological or biochemical analyses.

The retrieval of syntactic and semantic information in the production of verbs.

In Italian, there are two aspectual auxiliaries: essere (to be) and avere (to have). According to the syntactic hypothesis, aspectual auxiliary assignment in Italian is a syntactic phenomenon. Using the picture-word interference paradigm, Experiment 1 tested the predictions of this view. Results failed to support the syntactic hypothesis but could be explained within a semantic framework: A verb's thematic grid is involved in aspectual auxiliary assignment. Experiment 2 tested this hypothesis. The findings corroborated the predictions. The evidence is interpreted as suggesting the involvement of thematic information in the assignment of the aspectual auxiliary during the production of Italian verbs.

Radiographic findings in pulmonary tuberculosis: the influence of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

The chest radiographs and medical records of 166 patients diagnosed as having clinically active pulmonary tuberculosis were reviewed. Forty-nine patients (group I) were seropositives to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and 117 patients (group II) did not have known risk factors for HIV infection. Roentgenographic abnormalities were analysed in the two groups, according to nine different radiographic patterns previously defined. The seropositive group had a significantly higher proportion of hilar and/or mediastinal adenopathy (P less than 0.001), infiltrates confined to the lower lung fields (P less than 0.05), and miliary tuberculosis (P less than 0.005). Otherwise, single cavitation and destructive pattern were more frequent in the group II. These data suggest that patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and HIV infection are much more likely to have atypical radiographic findings.
