Mesenteric cyst is relatively rare, and its diagnosis is difficult. We carried out an ultrasound examination on a 6-year-old boy who showed intestinal obstruction. This examination revealed an abdominal mass, and he was diagnosed as mesenteric cyst. Later it was confirmed by operation. The histopathological examination revealed that it was a lymphangioma. A review was also carried out on 288 cases of mesenteric cyst in Japan.
In our study of 14 patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), we measured A-aDO2, VD/VT, arterial-to-end tidal PCO2 ), effective dynamic compliance, and pulmonary vascular resistance on a daily basis. At the onset of ARDS, all patients showed bilateral interstitial edema on the chest X-ray films, P(A-a)O2 of more than 500 mm Hg, marked decrease in effective dynamic compliance, a moderate increase in VD/VT, and a normal value of a-etPCO2. Pulmonary vascular resistance was low. After seven days, all of those who subsequently died and developed persistent elevation of P(A-a)O2, significant increase in VD/VT, a-etPCO2 and pulmonary vascular resistance, and significant decrease in effective dynamic compliance compared to the values at the onset of ARDS. Those abnormalities diverged significantly from the findings in those who survived. By evaluating sequential changes of those parameters, we might be able to predict an accurate prognosis of ARDS.
Intradermal injection of nicotine dissolved in normal saline in a concentration of 10(-5)g/ml produced axon reflex pilomotion, which was observed as goose flesh on the flexor surface of the forearm in human. The skin temperature was changed by immersing the forearm in a water bath at 22 to 45 degrees C. When the skin temperature was neutral as 32.5 degrees C, goose flesh appeared at about 5 sec and reached its maximal spread at about 25 sec, then it became smaller and disappeared at 1 min 30 sec. When the skin temperature was lower, its onset was delayed and its duration was longer. At higher temperature, time course of goose flesh was shortened. With a device of controlling temperature of receptor and effector portion independently, it was found that enhancement of goose flesh at lower temperature was due to a nature of the effector and the responsiveness of the receptor to nicotine was constant in a range from 20 to 40 degrees C. Reaction of the receptor to temperature was pharmacologically similar to that of autonomic ganglion.

A patient with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) whose bone marrow cells had complicated chromosomal abnormalities, in addition to an 8--21 translocation and a missing Y chromosome, is reported. The complex additional abnormalities did not appear to have much influence on the clinical aspects of the disease, eg, cytology of the leukemic cells and the patient's response to chemotherapy, even though the patient did have a rectal tumor due to leukemic cell infiltration.

An autopsy case of a 65-year-old male who died of hepatocellular carcinoma superimposed on liver cirrhosis complicated with systemic sarcoidosis is presented. No organ metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma was found except for a minute tumor embolus in the left upper lobe of the lung. Involved organs by sarcoidosis were the lymph nodes, lungs, heart, liver and spleen, but its presence was not noticed before death. Its cardiac involvement coincide with his clinical symptom of exertional dyspnea and the ECG finding of A-V block.
Liver tissues of 180 autopsy cases of cirrhosis and hepatoma and 285 consecutive autopsy cases of other diseases were studied for liver cell dysplasia correlated with hepatitis B surface and core antigens (HBsAg and HBcAg) in liver cells and sera, and antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) in sera. Liver cell dysplasia was characteristic in cirrhotic livers, particularly with hepatoma. No significant difference was found in age and sex between cirrhotic cases with and without dysplasia. Rate of positive HBsAg in liver cells and sera was significantly high in cirrhotic cases with dysplasia with or without hepatoma. Massive pattern distribution of orcein-positive liver cells was statistically significant in cirrhotic livers with or without hepatoma, but morphological characteristics of orcein-positive liver cells could not be correlated in significance with dysplasia and hepatoma. HBcAg showed neither correlation with liver cell dysplasia nor hepatoma. It appears to correlate with active cirrhosis, marked liver cell degeneration and necrosis, and membranous diffuse type HBsAg in liver cells.
