[Rosette forming B- and T-lymphocytes in allergic contact eczema (author's transl)].

The number of rosette forming lymphocytes with mouse and sheep red blood cells was examined in the time course of more localized (n = 16) and generalized (n = 12) allergic contact eczema. 1. In 25 healthy probands the mean number of B and T lymphocytes were 10 +/- 2.1% and 51 +/- 4.9%, respectively. 2. In generalized eczema a short significant increase of the number of both lymphocyte populations was observed. At the first day of examination 12 +/- 1.6% (p less than or equal to 1%) B and 59.1 +/- 5% (p less than or equal to 0.1%) T lymphocytes were counted. At the second day only the number of T lymphocytes (55 +/- 4.8%; p less than or equal to 5%) was increased, at the third day the number of T lymphocytes had normalized, too. 3. In the more localized eczema no changes in the number of lymphocytes could be found.

[Diagnosis and therapy of the extragenital manifestations of gonorrhea].

Among the several infections gonorrhoe occupies the first place. Long-term complications are rare. The arthritis gonorrhoica, the perihepatitis acuta gonorrhoica (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis-syndrome) and the gonococci sepsis, the clinical picture differential diagnosis of which were discussed, possess clinical relevancy. Apart from few exceptions penicillin even nowadays is still the remedy of choice.

[Separation of lymphocytes by using visotrast 370 (author's transl)].

Enrichments of lymphocytes are mainly performed according to the flotation principle. By means of numerous differences with regard to the composition and density of the solution for separation, the relative acelleration and duration of the centrifugation the advantages and disadvantages of at least 7 methods were compared with our own modification: 1. Visotrast 370 diluted with Aqua dest. is equal to density gradients containing ficoll. 2. The one-step assays proved to be better and less time consuming than the combined methods. 3. With the density of the flotation medium of 1,076 g . cm-3 79 +/- 11% of the lymphocyte of the original blood were isolated, their purity was 93 +/- 3%, their vitality 91 +/- 4%. 4. There was slight contamination with other blood cells.

[The Sézary syndrome--an erythrodermic T-cell-lymphoma].

Report on a 75-year-old patient with Sézary syndrome which is characterized by the following leading symptoms: Erythrodermia, leukocytosis, circulating atypical lymphocytes with cerebriformous nuclei (Sézary cells) and swollen lymph nodes. Light microscopic and electron microscopic findings refer to a transitory situation of the Sézary cells from the reactive character to the (pre)neoplastic one. The disease is classified by T-(helper)cells as a low grade non-Hodgkin-lymphoma in parallel to mycosis fungoides and in general it finishes lethally after a course of 5 to 8 years. Apart from local steroid ointments and UV-irradiations the internal application of steroids, in the late stage if necessary in combination with cytostatics is recommended for therapy.

[On the suitability of migration inhibition techniques in the in-vitro-diagnostics of chromium allergy (author's transl)].

1. Under the conditions of cell culture potassium dichromate is reduced to trivalent chromium (diphenylcarbacid/fotometry). Trivalent chromium reacts with proteins more strongly than the hexavalent chromium (gelchromatography/atom absorption spectrophotometry) and presumably represents the actual hapten. 2. Because of this in-vitro-conjugation chromium salts are suitable in their unconjugated form for applying in migration inhibition tests (capillary/Clausen technique). 3. In migration inhibition tests potassium dichromate showed a better antigenicity than chromium chloride. The capillary method was more sensitive than the Clausen technique when using the same test concentration. 4. Correlations between the degree of the patch test and the value of the migration inhibition did not exist.

Experimental investigations in guinea pigs on the recognition of the allergic eczematous reaction: A comparison of the macrophage migration inhibition test with the patch test.

1. The patch test as an in vivo test has disadvantages. It is our impression that biologically false reactions occur in approximately 5%. 2. The MIT as an in vitro test is very time consuming, but safe for the patient. It is supposed to give up to 20% false reactions. 3. In 76 and 72% of 156 guinea pigs sensitized with potassium bichromate and sulfasol respectively, both the test methods gave results in agreement. 4. Sensitization by potassium bichromate estimated by patch test only was 30%, and by MIT only also 30%, but the two test methods disagreed in 24%. 5. Sensitization by sulfasol evaluated in the patch test only was 36%, and in the MIT only 48% but the two test methods disagreed in 28%. 6. The differences between the results of the two test methods are not satistically significant and their failure rate does not provide absolutely sure results, but we believe that the patch test is preferrable in recognition of contact allergy because it is in vivo and probably has a lower failure rate in comparison with the MIT in the human.
