[Ultrastructural immunocytochemical localization of hormonal principles of the adenohypophysis in the terrestrial tortoise (Testudo mauritanica Dumer)].

An ultrastructural immunocytochemical study is realized with mammalian adenohypophyseal anti-hormone antibodies and permits characterization of five cellular types in Testudo mauritanica Dumer. The antiproteic-hormone antibodies STH, LTH and ACTH are each fixed on a well individualized cellular type. The anti-glycoproteic hormone antibodies identify a TSH cell; but two cell populations respond to the same beta LH antigonadotropic antibody. The question of the unicity or the duality of the gonadotrope cells is expressed.

Effect of castration and adrenalectomy on the ultrastructure of pinealocytes in the female garden dormouse (Eliomys quericnus L.) under different conditions of lighting and temperature during the normal period of hibernation.

The ultrastructure of the female garden dormouse pinealocyte has been studied during the period of hibernation in normal, castrated, castrated and adrenalectomized hibernant animals and non-hibernant ones living under a L-D = 10-14 photoperiodicity or continuous lighting. Continuous illumination on the one hand, and gonad and adrenalectomy on the other, have similar effects on the ultrastructure of pinealocytes. Especially a striking reduction of liposomes, an increased development of the Golgi apparatus and of cisterns formed by the rough endoplasmic reticulum were observed. The observations suggest that the liposomes are involved in a perhaps indoleaminergic antigonadotropic secretory process whereas the peculiar dilated cisterns of the rough endoplasmic reticulum may be related with a pineal polypeptidergic gonadotropic secretory process.

[Effects of blinding by bilateral orbital enucleation on the ultrastructure of the pineal gland in the female garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus L.). Correlations with the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis].

Dormice were blinded by bilateral enucleation in December before hibernation or in March at the end of hibernation and were then studied in July and October. All the animals stayed in permanent anoestrus even at long-term. The ultrastructure of the pinealocyte was very characteristic, presenting typical elements of both hibernal anoestrus and sexual activation. Two organelles were well developed in enucleated dormice: reticulo-endoplasmic vacuoles and liposomes whose development seemed to be associated with protein secretions and pineal serotonine level, respectively. The hypothalamo-hypophyseal characterististics of the enucleated animals were also surprising: the hypothalamic LHRH load was important and hypophyseal gonadotropic cell development normal although the ovaries were hypoactive. The dormouse has a seasonal sexual cycle which cannot be realized without light. Pineal ultrastructural findings correlated with the activity of the hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis lead us to think that this endocrine gland plays a role in the action of light on sexual activity.

[Heterozygote thalassemias screening. Contribution of data analysis methods (author's transl)].

In order to reduce the cost of a systematic heterozygote thalassemias screening, and using a discriminant analysis, the authors propose a pre-selection performed on the erythrocytometric data. In the present conditions of applicability, the methodology we used appears to be very efficient in the pre-screening process. An electrophoresis with the determination of hemoglobin A2 is then carried out on the pre-selected individuals as a confirmation of the diagnosis.

[Primary sclérosing cholangitis (author's transl)].

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is a rare affection. Two characteristic cases are described. A total of 80 cases have been reported in the published literature, and lesions are found varying from lacalized to diffuse forms. The affection is often associated with other disorders, especially hemorrhagic ulcerative rectocolitis, suggesting an auto-immune pathogenicity. Treatment is mainly surgical and consists, in the localized forms, of complete excision whenever possible and a by-pass operation. The diffuse forms, which are difficult to treat by surgicall methods, have a poorer prognosis and usually progress towards secondary biliary cirrhosis.

[Acute primary ischemic enteritis and colitis. Clinico-pathological and physio-pathological findings].

By opposition to acute post-operative ischaemic enterocolitis, the authors isolate, with the aid of seven cases, the intestinal lesions which spontaneously occur on the small intestines and on the colon and due to an ischaemic mechanism without thrombosis of the mesenteric vessels. After the description of clinical and anatomical features, they point out the main part of the vascular factor in the genesis of the lesions.

[Esophago-jejunostomy at the level of the neck for restoration of continuity in carcinoma of the esophagus (after esophageal resection or for palliative reasons) (author's transl)].

A technic of esophago-jejunostomy in the neck is described which uses a Y loop, to which is given a further blood supply through the internal mammary vessels, united to the vessels of the transplanted loop through microsurgical anastomoses. This technic is used either for purely palliative reasons or when the esophageal tumour has become inoperable, or after esophagectomy as a procedure for reconstruction of the digestive tract.
