The authors present the first results of the assessment of MRI (0.35 T) with adapted surface reel in the exploration of mammary pathology in 90 cases. On a morphological level, MRI permits a new analysis of signs of dystrophy. As far as MRI is concerned, no specific sign of mammary neoplasia seems to exist. A classification is suggested, taking into account morphology and parameters of relaxation.
The meglumine salt of TCA, a piperidinyl nitroxide stable free radical derivative, was tested as an NMR contrast enhancer. This report of its use in animals indicates its usefulness in the enhancement of signal intensity of the kidney and bladder.
The Authors present the results got regarding operations of sympathectomy together with operations of distal by-pass at the Institute of Surgical Pathology of the University of Verona from 1979 to 1983. Among the 106 cases, in 58 (55%) sympathectomy was performed with a aorto-bifemoral or iliac-femoral by-pass at the same time, in 48 (45%) pas performed with more distal by-pass. At follow-up in the 72% of the cases a clinical improvement as been noticed, in the 14.5% of the cases a steady result as been found, and in the 12.6% of the cases an aggravation of the situation. Furthermore the clinical stage of the disease (according to Fountain) as been compared with the operation. The Authors concluded that the sympathectomy carried out together with other vascular surgical operations is still a good procedure if the patients are within 70 years of age, no diabetics and pith a sufficient perfusion pressure of the ankle. Moreover, paradoxically, the sympathectomy is much more useful on stage II or III than on stage IV.

Thrombo-embolectomy by means of a Fogarty balloon catheter became part of routine surgical practice more than twenty years ago with a standardized method and technique. The authors report on a surgical population spread over ten years' activity (1975-1985) in the Institute of Surgical Pathology of the University of Verona with records of 416 emergency operations to remove thrombo-embolisms. Owing to its lack of operative mortality and the minimal trauma it causes, the technique is now strongly indicated and widely used. On the basis of their experience, however, the authors stress the need to adhere to certain basic principles: early recognition of the disease (within 12 hours); early anticoagulation of patients; immediate surgery. It is only by adopting such a policy that better results may be obtained in future and the number of amputations reduced.
The thrombogenicity of the graft materials is a significant factor incriminated in early failures. Some improvements have been achieved by modification of physical characteristics of the material as porosity, compliance, durability in order to improve patency rates. Platelets are major determinants of thrombus formation and may still be thrombogenic by activation of the coagulation enzymes. The purpose of this work is to study the platelets deposition on different material grafts, utilizing autologous platelets labelled with 111-Indium. The radioactivity pulses was recorder before and 4 days after surgery in aortoiliac and femoropopliteal districts. The graft material used in aortoiliac occlusions was: velour, double velour PTFE; in femoropopliteal: Double velour, PTFE, saphenous vein, umbilical vein, bovine carotid. In some patients the operation was TEA with patch in PTFE. The authors show the results of this study in 92 patients in relation of the material graft an location.

In order to define the influence of skeletal protein organization on transmembrane phospholipid movement in erythrocyte membranes, we measured the translocation rate of lysophosphatidylcholine in pathologic red cells. A simple method based on the differential extraction of lysophosphatidylcholine from the red cell membrane by saline and albumin solutions was used to quantitate the translocation rate. Two groups of pathologic red cells were chosen for these studies: red cells with quantitative deficiencies of the skeletal proteins, spectrin and protein 4.1, and sickle erythrocytes in which controlled reorganization of the membrane was induced by hemoglobin polymerization. Marked increase in lipid translocation rate was seen in red cells having quantitative deficiencies of spectrin and protein 4.1. The magnitude of the increase in translocation rate in spectrin-deficient red cells was related to the magnitude of protein deficiency. Translocation rate in sickle erythrocyte membranes increased by 50% upon deoxygenation as a result of sickle hemoglobin polymerization. No increase in translocation rate was seen in normal cells upon deoxygenation. By manipulating the extent of membrane reorganization that occurred following deoxygenation of sickle cells, we have been able to show that skeletal reorganization induced by hemoglobin polymerization and not hemoglobin polymerization per se is responsible for the increase in translocation rate. Together, these findings imply that the structural organization of membrane skeletal proteins plays an important role in regulating the rate of transbilayer movement of lipids across the erythrocyte membrane.
