Pulmonary embolism in the Rhodesian Black.

Pulmonary embolism is less frequent in Blacks than in Whites. Deep vein thrombosis is probably not uncommon in Blacks, but relatively few of them develop pulmonary embolism. Postoperative pulmonary embolism in Blacks is probably far less common than in Whites. We are dealing with a relatively young Black population, compared with the White one, and therefore more cases might be expected among the Black population as its life expectancy improves.

Transformation delay of lymphocytes in patients undergoing radiation therapy.

Two types of assay systems to measure the effect of radiation on immune competence are described. The first, transformation, is measured by blast formation or uptake and incorporation of tritiated thymidine by lumphocytes. This measure is affected by a number of known cell responses to radiation such as division delay and delay in DNA synthesis. The second, called Bactec, is designed to measure lymphocyte metabolic acitivty. Data gathered on 37 patients with lung cancer show that the Bactec system provides a better index of the patient's immune status before and after radiation therapy.

Gastritis, duodenitis, and bleeding duodenal ulcer following mefenamic acid therapy.

A 46-year-old woman developed hematemesis and melena two weeks after starting mefenamic acid therapy for osteoarthritis of the spine. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, arteriography, and a laparotomy revealed antral gastritis, duodenitis, and an acute bleeding ulcer in the third portion of the duodenum. Although mefenamic acid has many of the pharmacologic and physicochemical properties of aspirin and produces gastrointestinal ulceration in animals when administered in large doses, the English literature reveals only one case of gastric ulceration and a single instance of upper-gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage associated with its use. This case warns that mefenamic acid may cause serious gastric and duodenal inflammation and ulceration more commonly than is presently suspected.

Physician suicide risk: practical recognition and management.

This paper presents some preliminary data on physician suicides from the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Suicide Prevention as well as pertinent items from the literature. Data are presented according to age, gender, method, and health status. Signs and symptoms that physicians should recognize in their peers and approaches that may be used to identify a physician at risk are described.
