Complement fixing antibody to varicella-zoster virus in cancerous patients.

The titer of complement fixing antibody to Varicella-Zoster virus was studied in sera from 161 cancerous patients and 161 healthy controls. Sera with antibody titers greater than or equal to 1/4 were 74 (45.9%) among cancerous patients and 120 (74.5%) among healthy controls. The difference between these two groups is statistically significant.

Glycosidases in serum of cystic fibrosis patients.

In a study of eight glycosidases in serum samples from 72 cystic fibrosis patients, 85 cystic fibrosis parents and 34 healthy and diseased controls, significant elevations of mean alpha-glucosidase levels were found in cystic fibrosis patients. All other glycosidases did not show any significant change. Mean alpha-glucosidase levels in obligate heterozygotes were the same as in control individuals. Moreover, alpha-glucosidase levels in cystic fibrosis patients correlated with the degree of clinical impairment as measured by the Schwachman score.

[Iatrogenic ostial stenosis of the left coronary artery. Report of a case with Starr-Edwards aortic prosthesis (author's transl)].

A case of a 41 years-old-man, who had undergone surgical intervention ten years previously for aortic valve replacement in ECC with the coronary perfusion technique, is reported. This patient was studied because of the appearance of angina pectoris three months after the intervention and its progressive development. Selective left coronary angiography showed an ostial subocclusive stenosis; the run-off from the right coronary artery provided distal blood supply to the left coronary artery. A venous bypass was implanted between the aorta and the left anterior descending branch; the prosthesis was substituted because it was altered and caused hemolysis' problems. In accordance with most Authors late ostial coronary stenosis is a complication of the coronary perfusion technique, which is adopted for myocardial protection during surgical interventions for aortic valve replacement.

[Seroepidemiologic research on the antipoliomyelitic immunity in adult unvaccinated subjects].

The Authors carried out a serological research on the polimyelitis viruses in 727 adult subjects who had not been vaccinated orally. The results of the titration of the neutralizing antibodies showed that the situation of immunity with respect to poliomyelitis is still satisfactory. However, the difficulty of making an exact estimation of the duration of the state of immunity to poliomyelitis, and the persistent, though reduced, circulation of wild polioviruses are such that a continuous epidemiological control is advisable.
