Plasma prostaglandin F metabolite concentrations following cervical encerclage.

Peripheral plasma concentrations of 13, 14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM) were measured in seven women having elective cervical encerclage in an otherwise normal pregnancy. Three of seven patients had a statistically significant elevation of PGFM levels at 60 minutes after commencement of surgery. On the basis that the majority of patients had no significant rise and that there was no objective evidence of uterine contractions post-operatively, the routine administration of prostaglandin inhibitory agents to patients having cervical encerclage cannot be recommended.

Is weakness in old age due to muscle wasting?

Grip strength and fat-free mass (FFM) were measured in 158 men and 112 women of 65 years and over living at home. There was a striking decline in grip strength with increasing age in both men and women. A marginal decline in FFM was not statistically significant. Multiple regression analysis suggested that age had an effect on grip strength which was independent of FFM. An explanation for this pattern might be that with ageing an increasing proportion of skeletal muscle is replaced by fibrous tissue, so that, although there is striking reduction in muscle power, there is only a marginal reduction in FFM.

Response-contingent taste-aversion in treating chronic ruminative vomiting of institutionalised profoundly retarded children.

Two case studies are presented describing the use of response-contingent taste-aversion procedures to treat chronic ruminative vomiting of profoundly retarded children. Each treatment programme was designed to be carried out by para-professional staff in an institutional setting. Each programme eliminated rumination, with effects maintained one to nine months following treatment. For one subject who exhibited major weight-loss prior to intervention, substantial weight-gain was also demonstrated.

Kleeblattschädel anomaly and partial trisomy for chromosome 13 (47,XY,+der(13),t(3,13)(q24; q14).

This paper reports a case of partial trisomy involving the proximal segment of the long arm of chromosome 13. Kleeblattschädel anomaly was one of the many anomalies found in conjunction with this syndrome. The cytogenetic classification of the extra partial chromosome was based on trypsin-giemsa banding patterns and a paternal translocation involving chromosomes 3 and 13.

Clefts in quintuplets--a case report.

A report of clefting in three siblings of quintuplets, following treatment with Pergonal, is presented. It is suggested that the varying degrees of the abnormality may be related to cramped intra-uterine conditons or differing pressures at a critical developmental stage. To our knowledge, no previous reports of congential abnormalities associated with Pergonal therapy exist, and we feel that the causal relationship should be explored using a suitable animal model.

Subchronic oral toxicity of BaCl2 in rats.

Groups of young adult rats of both sexes were exposed to 0, 10, 50, or 250 mg/liter (ppm) of barium as barium chloride in drinking water for 4, 8, or 13 weeks. No adverse effects related to barium ingestion were observed in food consumption, clinical signs, body weight, hematologic parameters (i.e., hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell count, leukocyte count, prothrombin time, and fibrinogen), serum enzyme activities (i.e., SGOT, SGPT, and blood urea nitrogen), serum ions (i.e., Na, K, and Ca), gross pathology, and histopathology. Water consumption was slightly depressed in the highest dose group. A slight decrease in the relative weight of adrenals of treated vs. control animals was observed. Increasing dose, but not duration of exposure, produced related increases in barium concentrations in liver, skeletal muscle, heart, and bone, with the highest concentrations observed in bone.

Adjuvant therapy of T1 bladder carcinoma: preliminary results of an EORTC randomized study.

This paper reports the preliminary results of an ongoing clinical trial in patients with category T1 bladder cancer who are randomized after transurethral resection to receive either thiotepa, VM-26, or no treatment. While there are no significant differences between the three treatment groups with respect to the time until first recurrence, thiotepa has significantly reduced the recurrence rate as compared to either VM-26 (P = 0.03) or no treatment (P = 0.04) among the 215 patients for whom follow-up information is currently available.

Fluoroscopic guidance in femoral artery puncture.

Analysis of 100 femoral arteriograms demonstrated a consistent relationship between the course of the femoral artery and the femoral head. Fluoroscopic guidance can be of value in femoral puncture when the arterial pulse is diminished or obscured, for training purposes, and for analysis and correction of missed punctures.
