The authors report the case of a 15 day old neonate presenting a beta hemolitic streptococic (group A) infection, followed by cardio-respiratory failure and radiological opacification of the left superior lobe associated with ventilatory troubles at the left lung base. Massive hemoptysis made an angiographic study mandatory with the diagnosis of a mediastinal vascular tumor placed besides the left descending aorta with compression of the left bronchovasculary pedicule. Tumor ressection was not possible during surgical exploration and a left superior lobectomy was performed. Histological examination showed pulmonary infarctus. The child died a few weeks later. Autopsy revealed mycotic arterial aneurysm of the superior bronchic artery, a very rare lesion considering its localisation and the age of the patient.

Tryptophan, but not glutamine and lysine, inhibits the incorporation of 3H-uridine into nucleoli of explanted salivary glands by about 60%. In isolated nuclei also, the nucleolar incorporation of 3H-uridine triphosphate is reduced to about 50% by tryptophan. It is concluded that tryptophan acts directly at the nuclear level and the possible mechanisms.

Five limb extremities gangrene are reported in 54 meningococcemia. Prognosis depends first on early medical treatment. Extremities ischemia require large early aponeurotomy for limb preservation.
This study concerns 850 cases of burns in children. It showed the predominance of burns in boys between the ages of one and 3 years. Most domestic accidents (96.5%) were due to boiling water (55.9%), the second cause was burns due to a flame (11.7%). Most accidents arrived at meal times. The area of burnt skin was as follows:--in 222 cases, less than 5%;--in 365 cases, between 5 and ten percent;--in 152 cases, bwtween 10 and 25%;--in 111 cases, more than 25%.
Anti-beta 2 microglobulin sera (beta2m AS) rendered specific after extensive absorptions were obtained following immunization of rabbits with highly purified beta2m prepared from urine of tubular proteinuria. beta2m AS were cytotoxic upon addition of selected rabbit complement for human T and B lymphocytes. Partial inhibition of sheep red blood cells receptor recognition on T lymphocytes (E rosettes) and C3 component recognition on B lymphocytes (EAC rosettes) was obtained only with high concentrations of Fab'2 anti-beta2m, eliminating a direct association of beta2m and those receptors. Fab'2 anti-beta2 induced very little inhibition of Fc portion receptor recognition (EA rosettes), but they had no effect on lysis of targets covered with IgG anti-targets (ADCC), a function mediated through that receptor. Anti-beta2m antibodies in excess inhibited antigen-induced proliferation (PPD) and the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) performed in AB serum and fetal calf serum containing media ; whereas a potentiation of the response occurred in the presence of an antigen excess (beta2m) brought by the culture medium (AB serum) suggesting involvement of immune complexes. Pretreatment of responding cells with beta2m AS did block unilateral MLR ; conversely, treatement of stimulating cells had no effect. Independent migration of T cell membrane antigens (HTLA) and beta2m upon addition of suitable ligands, as well as the lack of inhibition by Fab'2 anti-beta2m of complement dependent lysis with IgG anti-HTLA, excluded possible association of HTLA and beta2m.
A case presenting association of sleep apnea with daytime hypersomnolence and retrognathia is described. Sleep laboratory evaluation showed severe discontinuous hypoxemia and a mean of 250 upper airway obstructions. The patient was treated successfully by surgical correction of the retrognathia.
Tarui's diseases affecting a brother and sister was studied. On the basis of these case, a general review is undertaken of this rare muscle glycogenosis, of which only six cases have been reported up to the present. This study underlines the characteristics of the responsible phosphofructokinase deficiency which has the special characteristic of manifesting itself at one and the same time in muscle by a picture of non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis and in the red cells by haemolysis, in most cases sub-clinical. This sign, clinically evident in the first case, was nevertheless a fundamental diagnostic element. In the context of the diagnostic criteria, emphasis is placed upon the value of the measurement of blood lactic acid after effort, the results of which, in conjunction with an increase in muscle enzymes, confirm the presence of a true muscle glygenosis. Enzyme studies indicate the nature of the latter.

In October 1976 an epidemic of 120 cases of paralytic shellfish poisoning was recorded in western Europe. Analysis of the 23 cases seen in Swizterland shows the following data; paresthesia of mouth and lips (100%); cerebellar syndrome (86%) with giddiness, ataxia, dysmetry and floating sensation; paresia or paralysis (62%); digestive symptoms (14%); no death. The mean incubation time is 3 hs 30 min; mean duration of the symptoms is 2 days. Half of the patients complain of asthenia and moderate memory disturbance lasting up to 3 weeks. The severity of the illness is in relation to the amount of ingested neurotoxin. The epidemiologic study shows that all European cases were due to consumption of mussels from the Atlantic coast of Spain.

A total of 509 undergraduate students aged 17 to 23 years, were tested to assess the adequacy of their knowledge of methods of birth control. A level of adequate knowledge was arbitrarily defined a priori as one standard deviation below the mean score of a random sample of second-year medical students, who were assumed to have more than adequate knowledge on the basis of prior courses in reproductive physiology and human sexuality. Of the undergraduate population sampled, 34 per cent were found to have inadequate knowledge. This population is in need of birth control information. Of nonvirgins in the sample, 20.2 per cent risk unwanted pregnancy, the majority (78.3 per cent) in spite of adequate knowledge. This suggests that lack of motivation, rather than purely lack of information, is an important factor contributing to the unwanted pregnancy rate of the college student population.
In a 20-year-old apprentice mechanic who had deliberately inhaled chlorothene (1,1,1-trichloroethane) an episode of vomiting was followed by ventricular fibrillation with fatal outcome despite intensive care in hospital. Autopsy revealed no anatomical cause of death. This is the first case reported in Switzerland of "sudden sniffing death syndrome".
