[Dealing with the scientific literature--a report of experiences].

There are several problems in collecting, analysing and receiving medical articles or literature. The increasing number of medical articles calls for a computer-aided system for literature data base programs. Therefore we want to present our own experiences. The computer-aided data bases such as MEDLINE and EMBASE are very useful but many other difficulties regarding citation and procurement of articles remain.

[Experience with the reference manager EndNote-EndLink].

A good reference management program should make it easy to record the elements of a reference: author's name, year of publication, title of article, etc. It should offer tools that let you find and retrieve references quickly, and it should be able to produce the bibliography in the format required for a particular publication. There are many computer programs, but very few stand out as truly useful, time saving, and work enhancing. One of them is EndNote-EndLink. We want to report our experience with this database manager. The functions and the use of the software package EndNote 2.3 for Windows are described. You can create your database or you can download batches of references from one of the popular searching services (e.g. MEDLINE). When you want to cite a reference you simply paste the reference wherever you want your in-text citation to appear. To prepare the bibliography, EndNote scans your article, replaces the place holders with citations and prints the list of references at the end of the manuscript, according with the style that you have chosen. Altogether EndNote provides an excellent combination of features and ease of use.

[Current aspects of ear preference].

Sensory asymmetries are most prominent with respect to the eyes and ears. There are various ways to investigate these asymmetries. The tests used for this purpose can be classified as preference, performance and sensory tests. Contrary to eyedness, earedness has received little attention. The objective of this study is to provide a few new investigatory aspects. We were able to identify 13 different tests for the determination of earedness in the literature: 'drawer', 'tablecloth', 'box', 'stop watch', 'telephone receiver', 'wall phone', 'earphone', 'door', 'heartbeat', 'transistor radio', 'voice', 'wall' and 'head movement'. A study including 300 student test subjects was done to determine the usefulness of this battery of 13 tests. A high correlation was found between 'stop watch', 'heartbeat', 'door' and 'box', but not between telephoning and earedness. The determination of earedness by a battery comprised of 4 tests ('stop watch', 'heartbeat', 'door' and 'box') is suggested.

Some aspects of earedness--the validity and reliability of self-report items.

In contrast to the extensive literature on hand, foot, and eye preferences there are only a few studies concerning ear preference. From a review of 27 studies 13 items (Stopwatch, Telephone receiver, Tablecloth, Head movement, Wall, Drawer, Wall phone, Heartbeat, Door, Earphone, Box, Pocket radio, Voice) were identified in the measurements of ear preference. In a series of investigations, these self-report items were validated with respect to individual behavioural measures and test-retest reliabilities were obtained over 1 mo. and 1 yr. for earedness. These data indicate that a questionnaire composed of these items could be a valid and reliable method for the assessment of various forms of ear preference, but there are several differences among the items in validity and reliability.

Ear preference: association with other functional asymmetries of the ears.

The bases for the preferential use of one ear are not clear. We investigated ear preference, asymmetry on a dichotic listening test and acuity dominance (laterality of hearing loss) in a sample of 51 patients with mild high frequency hardness of hearing. There was a higher correlation between measured ear preference and the measured acuity dominance than between ear preference and dichotic listening, suggesting a certain peripheral (cochlear) base for the ear preference.

Some aspects of self-reported hand preference.

The aim of the present study was to compare self-reported handedness with the directly tested hand preference using a 10-item battery in sample of 1223 students. The question assessing self-reported handedness was whether you are a left- or a right-hander or you use both hands equally. Responses indicate that self-reported handedness is a crude but possible method of measurement. Female right-handers showed the best agreement.

Signs of latent handedness in families.

Luria argued that several behaviors suggested a "latent" handedness. He suggested that such things as the way in which one crossed one's arms or clasped one's hands might reflect a latent preference for the left hand. Arm-folding refers to the preferential tendency for individuals to fold one forearm over the other, whereas hand-clasping refers to the preferential tendency for individuals to clasp the hands together. We investigated hand-clasping and arm-folding in 292 families (mother, father, and offspring). In this study about 55% of the population are left-hand-claspers, 44% are right-hand-claspers, and the remaining 1% report that they have no preference or are indifferent. About 54% of the population are left-arm-folders, 42% are right-arm-folders, and the remaining 4% report that they have no preference or are indifferent. Familial data suggest that hand-clasping and arm-folding may be under genetic control: although the data do not fit any straightforward recessive or dominant Mendelian model, they are compatible with the type of model invoking fluctuating asymmetry which has been used to explain the inheritance of handedness. It is possible that hand-clasping and arm-folding as well as leg-crossing may be idiosyncrasies due to or influenced by physical bilateral differences in the hands or arms. All family data including others and mine together (arithmetical sum) suggest a genetic contribution, although environmental influences are also evident.

[Selected aspects of endonasal paranasal sinus surgery].

The specific diagnosis and surgical treatment of chronic sinusitis or nasal polyposis has been developed distinctly in the last decade. Today rigid and flexible endoscopy of the nose and paranasal sinuses is a necessary tool in every ear-nose-and-throat-office. Diagnosis and conservative treatment in acute inflammatory, chronic hyperplastic and polypoid diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses as well as in functional endonasal surgery require telescopes. In the conservative therapy glucocorticoids play a dominant role. The topical application of steroids is preferred. Successful functional endonasal surgery demands postsurgical treatment and endoscopic follow-up.

[Phylogenetic aspects of laterality].

The human being is not only characterized by the ability of abstract thinking, upright walking and speaking, but also by a strong and differentiate functional asymmetry. The great majority are right-handers, showing a left-cerebrally dominance for language and praxis. It is very important to know the period when the human laterality of functions is evolved. Human beings of all races and cultures appear to have been predominantly right-handed since the earliest records were made. The time when right-handedness emerged in human evolution is a matter of some dispute. Because of poor record-keeping in prehistoric times, statements about the evolution of laterality in human beings must be based largely on speculation. The present review summarizes the prehistoric data concerning handedness and cerebral laterality. It is confirmed that laterality is not evolved in the last thousand years but it seems that lateralization of functions is the result of a protracted process elapsing perhaps several million years ago. Moreover this paper discusses the genesis and reasons of laterality.

[Several aspects of modern literature research].

This article reviews today's methods of searching the literature, especially the electronic ones. There are 2 main methods of searching: CD-ROM- and online searching. Online searching is a fast and powerful alternative to CD-ROM searching. Formal training is necessary for quick and cheap reference finding. Other benefits such as direct transfer from online searching to your own computer bibliography database make online searching of biomedical databases essential to consider.

[Arm folding--an overview].

The literature concerning arm folding is reveiwed. This analysis could be based on 121 populations. In addition to this the paper discusses incidence, sex, age differences and genetical problems including twinning. The incidence of left arm folding ranges from 20% to 65% (mean value 54%). The review shows a predominance of the left-type in Europe. Age and sex differences are only small. Between arm folding and handedness no relationship could be found, and only a very weak one between arm folding and hand clasping. 13 authors examined arm folding in families, and 2 in twins. The family data suggest that arm folding may be under a certain genetic control, yet it is clear that no simple genetic model concerning the inheritance can be assumed. Monozygotic as well as dizygotic twins show a low rate of concordance, and the frequencies of R-R, R-L and L-L pairs in monozygotic and dizygotic twins show a binomial distribution.

[Selected aspects of computer-assisted literature management].

We want to report about our own experiences with a database manager. Bibliography database managers are used to manage information resources: specifically, to maintain a database to references and create bibliographies and reference lists for written works. A database manager allows to enter summary information (record) for articles, book sections, books, dissertations, conference proceedings, and so on. Other features that may be included in a database manager include the ability to import references from different sources, such as MEDLINE. The word processing components allow to generate reference list and bibliographies in a variety of different styles, generates a reference list from a word processor manuscript. The function and the use of the software package EndNote 2 for Windows are described. Its advantages in fulfilling different requirements for the citation style and the sort order of reference lists are emphasized.

Cloning and genomic organization of the human transforming growth factor-beta type I receptor gene.

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) regulates cell cycle progression by a unique signaling mechanism that involves its binding to the type II (T beta R-II) TGF beta receptor and activation of type I (T beta R-I). Both are transmembrane serine-threonine receptor kinases. As various types of human tumor cells are often refractory to TGF beta-mediated cell cycle arrest, it is likely that the T beta R-I receptor is inactivated in many of these cases. We determined the intron-exon organization of the TGFBR1 gene. We report here that this gene is approximately 31 kb in length and consists of nine exons. The organization of the segment of the TGFBR1 gene that encodes the C-terminal portion of the serine-threonine kinase domain appears to be highly conserved between members of the R-I gene family. This information should facilitate and expedite the structural analysis of TGFBR1 in human tumors and possibly other disease states.

[Current aspects of diagnosis and therapy of nasal polyposis].

Nasal polyps are tumor-like, hyperplastic swellings of the nasal mucous membranes. The histology may vary. The clinical picture shows a great heterogeneity, ranging from single polyps (so-called choanal polyps) to almost complete polypoid transformation of the mucosa in all paranasal sinuses. Nasal polyps may be associated with different inflammatory nasal diseases such as chronic rhino-sinusitis, cystic fibrosis and Kartagener's syndrome. The exact pathogenesis of nasal polyps is unknown. Several theories have been formulated over the past 20 years attributing nasal polyps to a variety of causes including allergy, genetic predisposition and inflammation. Recently, a relationship has been demonstrated between the production of cytokines and the formation and activation of inflammatory cells in the polyps. The diagnosis and surgical treatment of nasal polyposis has been decisively developed over the past decade. Current diagnostic and therapeutic concepts are presented for the treatment of nasal polyposis. Precise indications for medical and surgical treatment of nasal polyposis can be derived from an evaluation of the allergic endoscopic and radiological examinations. Glucocorticoids play a dominant role in conservative therapy. Topical application of steroids is the preferred route. Surgical therapy should not be radical. It should focus on the lateral nasal wall rather than on the healthy mucosa of the sinuses itself.
