[Treatment of chemical burns and erosions ].

Experimental and clinical observations suggested that after alkali burns of the eyes, neutralization of the tissues and the aqueous humor occurred with in hours. The further course of the disease was found to be an inflammatory reaction. Consequently, an anti-inflammatory therapy was introduced and employed with success in experiments and in the clinics.

[Utility of low light level television cameras for the fluorescein angiography of the retina (author's transl)].

A survey of the major proportion of low-light level TV cameras available on the German market is described. A comparison and an assessment of the applicability of televised fluorescein angiography were carried out with the aid of technical data and measured results. It became evident that some systems were practicable for clinical use. With those it was possible to record angiograms at minimal illumination levels and patient inconvenience was reduced significantly. Measurements of blood flow parameters were possible with good temporal and geometrical resolution and full reproducibility.

[Televised flurescein angiography of the retina--new technical aspects (author's transl)].

A television-fundus-camera is described, which makes possible video-tape recordings of both conventional fundal- appearances as well as fluorescein-angiograms. Minimal illumination of the fundus with a spectral lamp is utilized. The use of a spectral lamp optimizes the excitation of fluorescein dye and the intensity of the illumination can therefore be reduced to a minimal level. Thus, patient inconvenience is minimized and ocular immobility can be maintained for the duration of the examination, which results in better quality recordings.

Oxidized and reduced glutathione levels of the cornea in vivo.

A new method for preparing the rabbit cornea is described for the assay of metabolite levels in the in vivo state. The preparation includes in vivo rapid freezing of the tissue by liquid nitrogen, freeze sawing, lyophilization, and extraction with 0.5 N perchloric acid. Reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione levels and the GSH/GSSG ratios were compared with adenosine phosphate levels and ATP/ADP ratios. The most important results of this investigation seemed to be a significant difference in the redox state of the glutathione between the epithelium and the endothelium of the corea and the different reducing capacity of these tissues as indicated by the steady-state levels of the GSH and the GSSG. These metabolic processes may be used to eliminate toxic peroxides from the transparent ocular tissues produced by light or other chemical compounds.

[Congenital ectropion of the upper eyelids due to an anomaly of the eyelids in down's syndrome (author's transl)].

A 5-months-old female baby with Down's Syndrome developed an intermittent spastic ectropion of the upper eyelids. The reasons for this are thought to be the flaccidity of the connective tissue, which is typical in Down's Syndrome, and a little anomaly of the eyelids, the tarsus was too short horizontally and very weak and the upper eyelids were somewhat larger than normal and elongated. Suturing Bangerter's lid-sheets on the upper eyelids for 15 days resulted in a scarring of the tarsus with the lax connective tissue of the upper eyelids. The ectropion disappeared and did not recur.

Concentration of ampicillin in the vitreous after cryocoagulation.

After transconjunctival cryocoagulation rabbits received 100 mg/kg ampicillin intravenously. At different times in serum, aqueous humor, and in vitreous the concentrations of ampicillin were determined by the agar diffusion method. During the first 90 min after injection the concentration of ampicillin in the vitreous of the treated eyes reached 1 microgram/ml. Up to 3 days after coagulation such high concentrations were found. Five and ten days after coagulation the concentration reached 0.48 microgram/ml (mean value). With progressive cicatrization of the cryospots less ampicillin was found in the vitreous. In the vitreous of the untreated control eyes only minimal or no ampicillin was found in all of our experiments.

Compartmentation of redox metabolites in the anterior eye segment?

In bovine corneal epithelium, stroma, and aqueous humor the levels of ascorbic acid (ASC) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) were investigated. Two methods were used, the photometric assay with 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol and the formation of osazone by 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. The ASC levels in the corneal epithelium and aqueous humor were found to be in the millimolar range, the ASC/DHA ratio being about 10. The stromal ASC and DHA levels were much lower, with a ratio of 0.7. ASC and DHA had similar levels and ratios to those of reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) reported in the literature. In the corneal epithelium the redox ratio of glutathione was higher than that of ascorbic acid. Therefore, glutathione was supposed to reduce dehydroascorbic acid.

[On the photography of larger areas of the optic fundus-trials with the wide angle camera Clinitex CA-2 (author's transl)].

The wide angle fundus camera Clinitex CA-2 was tried out on patients and normal volunteers on evaluating the numerous photographs we found the three optic heads to deliver good results. The quality of the 60 degrees- and 100 degrees-pictures improved with the increasing dilatation of the pupil. Even retinal detachments and other changes with a different level were recoreded very well. In black-and-white- photography, uneven illumination of the fundus was successfully compensated by using a two-step developer with increased utilization of film speed. This procedure allowed good wide angle documentation of the fundus at comparatively low costs.

The redox state of the glutathione in the bovine corneal epithelium.

In the corneal epithelium the levels of the oxidized and reduced glutathione, the oxidized and reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide, the glucose-6-phosphate and the 6-phosphogluconate were investigated. The in vivo steady state levels were defined by preparation procedures and by the energy state of the adenosine phosphate system. The ratios of the levels of the metabolites involved suggested that the reactions of the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and of the glutathione reductase operate dependent on the redox state of the triphosphopyridine nucleotides.

[Cataract by galactokinase deficiency (author's transl)].

In an infant with an inborn defect of the galactokinase, a diffuse turbidity of the lenses was observed before the onset of dietetic therapy at the age of 5 weeks. 2 1/2 years later, the lenses were almost clear, however, typical zonular opacities were revealed at the slit lamp.
