[Treatment trials of plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in central vein thrombosis of the retina].

Five patients with central retinal vein occlusion were treated by fibrinolysis using recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA). Three patients received 70 mg of rt-PA within 90 minutes followed by 1000 I.U. of heparin per hour. The retinal blood flow was measured by videofluorescence angiography. The arterio-venous passage time initially prolonged was diminished after the fibrinolysis. Also the vision and the plasma viscosity were improved. However, this beneficial effect lasted only for a few days. Therefore, two other patients were treated for three days by daily infusions of 70 mg rt-PA. This longterm lysis did not improve vision, arterio-venous passage time or plasma viscosity. No side effects of this fibrinolytic therapy were observed. But ten days later, all of these patients had to be treated by photocoagulation.

[Eye injuries caused by eyeglass lenses].

Among a group of 452 patients treated for eye injuries between 1979 and 1983, there were 66 with injuries due to broken spectacle lenses. These accidents accounted for 7.1% of all penetrating lacerations and 18.2% of all superficial ones. The trend in the period reviewed was toward an increase in such injuries. Altogether, 86.3% of the accidents occurred during free time, with most of the patients being male and between 11 and 30 years of age. The number of injured children is very low. The number of patients with lid lacerations was equivalent to 40.9%, the same as for injuries to the cornea. Most of the patients wore concave lenses, of which 48.5% were shattered by hitting or being hit by another object, and 36.4% by the patient falling.

[Cells on intraocular lenses. Comparison of specular and slit-lamp microscopy findings].

Examination with a specular microscope facilitates diagnostic evaluation of cells on the surface of intraocular lenses. Similarly, slit-lamp examination makes specular microscopic studies possible. However, image resolution and magnification are not achieved by using this method, though the amount of time and instrumental effort is minimal. Various types of cells can be differentiated. Fibroblast-like cells can only be demonstrated readily in the specular areas, whereas multinucleate giant cells can usually also be seen by using focal illumination. It is difficult to differentiate the smaller, mononucleated cells.

Alterations of glucose levels in the blood and the anterior eye segment of rabbits exposed to ketamine-xylazine anaesthesia.

In rabbits the blood glucose and consequently the aqueous humour glucose levels were increased under general anaesthesia by Ketanest-xylazine. Between 60 and 90 min of the general anaesthesia the average blood glucose levels were found to be three times and those of the aqueous humour twice the normal values. After more than 75 min of anaesthesia the glucose levels tended to be further elevated.

Complications of lid surgery.

Fifty-seven patients operated for basal cell carcinoma of the lids were reexamined with regard to postoperative and late complications. Minor immediate complications without long-lasting consequences occurred in 37%. Bad scar formation was seen in 4 out of 57 cases. Four other cases suffered with recurrences. Two of these cases were treated with X-rays several years before the surgical intervention.
