[Unilateral nevoid telangiectatic syndrome].

In recent years the unilateral nevoid teleangiectasia syndrome (UNTS) has been mainly reported in the Anglo-American literature. This rare disease is not well-known in the German literature, where hitherto it has not been published. Based on the observation of a new case the clinical and histologic features of UNTS are reviewed and the pathogenesis discussed in detail.

[Oculodermal melanocytosis (nevus of ota) and blue nevus (author's transl)].

Report is made of a patient having concurrently an Ota nevus and a blue nevus. The dermal melanocytes showed a marked formation of large intracytoplasmatic vacuoles. Reference to the important role of an "extracellular sheath" is made. The nearly identical ultrastructural characteristics of dermal melanocytes in various dermal melanocyte disorders seems to imply a common pathological origin in their development.

[Subcutaneous Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens infection in man--report of the first case in Austria and review of the literature (author's transl)].

A 39-year-old female patient developed migratory skin nodules 4 months after a vacation in Greece. The patient observed a total of 17 nodules moving over the trunk to the left thigh, where a subcutaneous lesion was excised, yielding a parasite measuring 0.5 mm X 7 cm. It was classified as Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens. Since this is the first case observed in Austria, an exact description of subcutaneous dirofilariasis, its geographical distribution and a review of the literature is presented.

[Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). Increased serum activities in patients with dermatological diseases (author's transl)].

Serum activities of ACE were investigated in 40 patients with dermatological disease and in nine patients with sarcoidosis. The method of Cushman and Cheung, modified according to Lieberman, was used. Both sarcoidosis patients and patients with dermatological diseases showed marked elevations of ACE-activity. The increase in ACE-activity might result from inflammation and immunological events.

[8-Methoxypsoralen (8-MOP)-a new galenic form and its relation to 8-MOP serum levels (author's transl)].

A bioequivalence study was performed with two different 8-MOP preparations. Thirty-eight patients participated in the investigation. We compared a product already marketed containing a micronized powder in hard gelatine capsules with a new product in soft gelatine capsules containing the 8-MOP in a solution. With the new galenic preparation the serum level obtained was 3.2 (P less than or equal to 0.01) times higher than with the old product. Thus, the improved resorption out of the solution was mainly responsible for these results.

[Nosologic position of demodicidosis in humans].

In 20 patients with rosacea and rosacea-like eruptions Demodex folliculorum mites were found in high numbers within lesional skin. In one patient Demodex folliculorum could be demonstrated in pits and burrows in the epidermis of the scalp. In other instances the mouth parts of the mites were closely related to the follicular epithelium. Recent parasitologic findings showed that in spite of their name (Demodex = "sebaceous worm") the mites derive their nutritive requirements from cellular proteins obtained by epithelial destruction. To clarify the pathogenetic significance of hair follicle mites in man as suggested by these histological findings as well as their known ability to form organisational centers of foreign body granulomas, further epidemiologic and immunologic studies are needed. Topical antiparasitic agents did not offer any therapeutic advantage over traditional preparations used for rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis.

[The significance of adrenergic receptors for the development of nevus flammeus and nevus anemicus (author's transl)].

Examination of patients with nevus flammeus or nevus anemicus showed disturbed sensibility in the area of the nevus in the majority of cases. Histologically and with special technique of histochemistry and fluorescencemicroscopy there was no evidence for neurogenic lesions. However, signs of vegetative dysfunction were present: hyperhidrosis and absent reactivity of vasculature in the nevus area to vasoconstrictive and vasodilatatory stimuli. Based on these findings a disturbed regulation of vascular intramural adrenergic receptors seemed possible and really could be demonstrated by means of autoradiography. In both types of nevi only one of the adrenergic receptors could be marked with specific antagonists. Therefore the persistent vascular dilatation and constriction can be accounted for by the absence of one of these receptors. This abnormal distribution of receptors could be due to a developmental defect influenced by the "nerve growth factor".

[Treatment of porphyria cutanea tarda with intermittent chloroquine].

Intermittent chloroquine medication was given to 15 patients with porphyria cutanea tarda. These are the advantages of the chloroquine treatment: The clinical signs of porphyria cutanea tarda and the liver-dysfunction are re-adjusted in short time. The equilibrium of porphyrin metabolism is restored by the transformation of the biochemical manifest porphyria cutanea tarda into a latent form.

[Cutaneous cysts and cystic skin tumors].

The nomenclature and pathogenesis of cutaneous cysts is discussed along the lines of their pathological properties. On the basis of histological and experimental evidence it is concluded that most cysts represent benign neoplasms derived from pluripotential cells.

[About the angiographic diagnosis of intestinal carcinoids (author's transl)].

Using two angiographically well documented cases the angiomorphological features of intestinal carcinoid tumors are described. One case is a carcinoid of the terminal ileum with hepatic metastases, the other case a cecal carcinoid without distant metastases. The primary tumor of the second case is strikingly hypervascular--most primary carcinoid tumors heretofore described in literature were hypovascular. In both cases is the mesentery afflicted in the typical manner indicating spread to local lymph nodes. By reviewing the literature the pathophysiologic mechanisms causing the anatomic changes are explained.

[Poikilodermic parapsoriasis. Case report and discussion of nomenclature].

A case of a 59 year-old patient with premycotic parapsoriasis lichenoides of a special poikilodermic type is presented. In addition, the formation of multiple bowenoid actinic keratoses and even squamous cell carcinomas on both forearms was apparently favored by the poikilodermic change. An attempt is made to summarize the nomenclature of the parapsoriasis-poikiloderma group of dermatoses.

Anti-immunoglobulin-induced histamine secretion by rat peritoneal mast cells studied by immunoferritin electron microscopy.

We have used ferritin-conjugated divalent and monovalent anti-Ig antibodies to study simultaneously, histamine secretion and the ultrastructural distribution and redistribution of Ig receptors on rat peritoneal mast cells. We conclude that (a) divalent anti-Ig is required for both receptor redistribution and for calcium-dependent degranulation and histamine release, (b) divalent anti-Ig induces patching and pinocytosis but not capping of Ig molecules, (c) neither capping nor pinocytosis are required for triggering and if clustering is necessary, then less than 10 Ig molecules are required per cluster, and (d) degranulation (and histamine release) is not an all or none response of the mast cell.
