The correlation between the primary structure and the expression of idiotypy in the anti-galactan antibody system is extremely precise. Amino-acid residues, which are implicated in the expression of recurrent or private idiotopes, are localized in the CDR3 region of all hybridomas and of at least 2 out of 4 myeloma proteins. A single substitution in this region may, in some cases, suffice to abolish idiotope expression.
A pathogen may emerge as an important public health problem because of changes in itself or its transmission pathways. Alternatively, a microorganism may emerge as a pathogen or acquire new public health importance because of changes in host susceptibility to infection. Factors influencing host susceptibility within the population as a whole include increases in the number of immunocompromised patients; increased use of immunosuppressive agents, particularly among persons receiving cancer chemotherapy or undergoing organ transplantation; aging of the population; and malnutrition. In considering the emergence of foodborne pathogens and designing interventions to limit their spread, the susceptibility of these population subgroups to specific infections should be taken into account.

Wild mice of eight types were immunized with hapten NP, and the occurrence of a genetically controlled idiotype NP-b in their sera was studied. Five of the mouse types were subspecies of Mus musculus, the others were M. cervicolor, M. dunni and M. caroli. An idiotype indistinguishable from NP-b was the prediminant anti-NP antibody in M. m. molossinus, the other seven types of mice did not have this antibody population. Lack of the idiotype in these mice does not show that they do not have the VH gene controlling its expression since the idiotypic population must have the lambda light chain, and the seven types of mice either have little of lambda immunoglobulin or have lambda chains different from the lambda chains of the laboratory mice.
Henoch-Schonlein Purpura is best recognized by a characteristic petechial/purpuric skin rash. Clinical features arise from a widespread vasculitis, affecting many systems. Nursing interventions focus on family education and supportive measures to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications.
