Whole blood was passed through glass bead filters and the retention of platelets studied under various experimental conditions. Platelet retention was similar over a wide range of blood flow rates; however, it was decreased at fast rates of flow. Platelet retention was not influenced by the haematocrit value of the blood over a wide range. Retention in filters containing siliconized beads was similar to that in filters with untreated beads. Platelet retention was inhibited by the addition of citrate or adenosine to the blood before passage through the filter and was also less when the blood was cooled. Heparin and phenylindandione therapy did not affect the results. There was a wide range of results of platelet retention tests with normal blood samples and considerable variability between the results of duplicate samples from the same donor. Repeated testing of normal donors over a three-month period gave results which varied widely within the normal range. Twenty-two of 40 uraemic blood samples showed decreased platelet retention. The mechanism of platelet retention from whole blood by glass bead filters is not clear but may be related to platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate or other aggregating agents.

The serums of 123 wild mice from six different geographic locations in the United States contain five of the six known heavy-chain antigenic determinants that have been identified in immunoglobulin of inbred laboratory strains of mice. On the basis of the distribution of determinants in inbred strains,44 of the mice were judged to be heterozygotes of various combinations and two had combinations of determinants that were unusual and could only have occurred in laboratory inbred mice by recombination.
Five kappa chains in the urinary proteins of the BALB/c mouse have the same carboxyl terminal amino acid sequence; this sequence resembles that of kappa light chains in human immunoglobulins. The five chains have amino acid sequence variations at the amino- terminal. The genetic basis for the amino- terminal variations is not understood but could be due either to a mecha nism for differently translating a single genetic message or to the presence of more than one kappa- type structural cistron in the BALB/c genome.

Mouse serum contains protein having the same charge density and molecular size as the major urinary protein complex of mice. Mouse liver (but not eight other tissues examined) incorporated amino acids labeled with carbon-14 into the complex in vitro. The degree of incorporation was greater in livers from males than from females, and was internmediate in livers from females treated with testosterone.
