[The value of Wagner and Selvester's electrocardiographic point indices for assessing global and regional function of the left ventricle in patients with ischemic heart disease].

The study includes 45 patients with ischemic heart disease. The reproducibility of Selvester's QRS-point index was examined by two researchers (r = 0.98). Between the ejection fraction of the left ventricle and the ECG-pont indices there exists a reverse relation, the correlation coefficients being equal (r = -5.58). Between the segmental disturbances of the left ventricular wall movements, examined by the systolic shortening in percentage of the radial axes, and both ECG indices there is also an equal correlation (r = 0.59). The relation between the angiographically evaluated segmental disturbances and the ejection fraction is also reverse, r = -0.88. The results of the study prove the relatively great possibility for mistakes of only the routine rest ECG is analyzed. The ECG evaluation of the left ventricular function cannot disclose the compensatory reserves of the healthy myocardium.

[Serum enzymes in hypothyroidism].

The following parameters were studied in 27 newly diagnosed and not treated patients with primary hypothyroidism: TTH, creatine kinase (CK) with MB isoenzyme, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) with isoenzymes LDH1 and LDH5, aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) and alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) before and after 20-day substitutive therapy. It has been established that the enzymes were increased in about 60% of the untreated patients, and the typical enzyme constellation for hypothyroidism consisted of CK with MB isoenzymes, ASAT and LDH1. The myocardial isoenzymes were normalized within the period of substitutive therapy. The enzymes were established to be elevated only in the patients that had increased CK. The follow up of the above enzyme constellation before and during the initial phases of the treatment of hypothyroidism could provide considerable possibilities of differential diagnosis with ischemic heart disease, often manifested during that period. The determination of CK in advance would be a screening determining the necessity of studies on the enzyme constellation.

[Case of primary hypogonadism in congenital dyskeratosis: Zinsser-Cole-Engmann syndrome].

A rare case is described with congenital dermatosis, leading to systemic lesions of epithelium of skin and mucose, combined with primary hypogonadism. A very low level of testosterone was established with high gonadotropic hormones and prolactin. Hypogonadism was established to be the result from systemic changes of skin, its accessory and epithelium of seminiferous tubules in testes.

[Case of severe hypercalcemic crisis in primary hyperparathyroidism].

A patient is described, admitted to the clinic with manifested picture of severe hypercalcemic crisis. The clinical, paraclinical and instrumental investigations established the presence of adenoma of parathyroid glands. In spite of the reduction of hypercalcemia, after the conservative treatment, the effect was but only transient and adenectomy was performed as a radical method, which led to permanent normocalcemia.

[Use of the artificial endocrine pancreas in the clinic].

Via the artificial endocrine pancreas--apparatus "BIOSTATOR" 100 patients were studied and treated, namely: 90 with diabetes mellitus, 7 with hyperinsulinism and 3 with obesity. The 24-h insulin needs of the diabetics with insulin-dependent and non-insulin dependent with secondary exhaustion type of diabetes, were determined. The following subcutaneous insulin dosage was determined, depending on the insulin amount spent during the 24-h biostator control. It was established that the necessary reduction of the intravenously administered insulin is 30% on the average with the passing over to subcutaneous regime. The indices of lipid metabolism were also studied as well as numerous hormones with which the carbohydrate compensation leads to a change. The problem of the "morning" phenomenon is discussed.

[Scientometric characteristics of the published scientific works of Prof. Konstantin Chilov].

A comprehensive scientificometric study was carried out on the publications of Corresponding member Prof Dr. K. Cilov, covering 127 monographs, textbooks and papers, published within the period 1929-1957. The results obtained were mathematically--statistically processed according to the methods of statistical grouping and alternative analysis and illustrated via table method and graphic analysis. The criteria of observation concern the quantitative, type and thematic characteristic of the co-authors of Prof K. Cilov. The analysis established an evenness in the scientific and publication creative work of Prof K. Cilov during the periods of his scientific maturing, his scientific interests directed mainly to the clinical-laboratory and cardiological problems, infectious and endocrine diseases. The percentage of his publications, with he as a sole author is 69,29%, and of team publications--30,71%. The personified co-authors are 32, and non-personified ones--65, with a predomination of the inconstant collaborators, so 70,87% of the co-authors are with a duration of the collaboration to 1 year.

[Effect of perocin (zineb) on the quality of ovine seminal fluid].

The fungicide perocin , an analogue of the preparation Zineb ( ditiocarbamate ) was applied orally with the feed to 11 rams divided into two test groups of three animals each and one control group of five rams. The preparation was administered at the rate of 1/50 and 1/100 of DL50 per kg body mass to the first and second test group, respectively, in the course of 4 months. During both the preparatory and the experimental period semen was sampled twice a week with the use of an artificial vagina, and investigations were carried out to evaluate the qualitative properties of the semen, the level of Na ions, the redoxi -potential and the activity of the alkaline phosphatase (APh). Apparently, the preparation triggered a trend toward increasing the number of pathologic spermatozoa (20-30 per cent) and decreasing to a lower extent the concentration of the sodium ions and the values of the redoxi -potential. The motility of spermatozoa was lowered by 4.3 per cent for the animals that were treated with 1/50 DL50 per kg body mass, and by 2.1 per cent for those that were offered 1/100 DL50 per kg body mass. There were certain differences between the values obtained although these were statistically insignificant so far as the alkaline phosphatase was concerned. They pointed to the fact that perocin contributed to the increase in the value relationships of some of the forms of this enzyme. The same applied also to the APh1 which is believed to have certain bearing upon preserving the activity of spermatozoa.

[Serial publications of the World Health Organization. Scientifico-metric study].

A comprehensive study was carried out on the serial editions of the World Health Organization, European Regional Bureau and of the International Agency of cancer studies for the period 1950-1981. A total of 1060 publications were analyzed concerning the type, quantitative characteristic and their thematic trends. The science-metric analysis revealed that the series "Technical reports" had the longest duration--32 years. A firm increase both of the number of the publications and the series is outlined. Thematically, the publications concerning the organization and management of public health have the greatest relative share. The publications about infectious diseases and the campaign against them are also widely covered as well as the oncologic diseases, nutrition, environmental preservation, psychic diseases, etc. The study revealed that the system for scientific communications of WHO in medicine and public health is an example of collective team scientific work and international character of medical service of modern type--international both as creation and consumption.
