TaqI polymorphism of the epidermal growth factor receptor gene in Caucasoids and Japanese.

Genetic polymorphism of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor gene following Taq I digestion was compared between samples of genomic DNA from glioma-derived cell lines and Caucasoid and Japanese subjects. The same three allelic forms of the EGF receptor gene, marked by variant fragments of approximately 12.8, 11.6 and 10.8 kb in size were common to both ethnic groups and the 12.8- and 11.6-kb fragments were found in the glioma-derived cell line DNA. A further variant fragment of approximately 13.8 kb in size has been shown to be thus far restricted to the Japanese. These data suggest that most allelic forms of the EGF receptor gene recognized by Taq I restriction fragment length polymorphism have a long evolutionary history and probably do not predispose to development of malignant glioma.

[Nutritional status and certain risk factor for health status of youths in Subotica].

Nutritional status represents the satisfaction of the human body with nutritive and protective substances and is the reflection of these physical and physiological characteristics, bio-chemical composition, functional capability and the health status. The aim of the examinations and nutritional status monitoring was the early discovery of nutritive disorders in an individual and/or population and undertaking of the appropriate preventive measures. During 1996 in Subotica was performed the measuring of body height, body weight, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure in 887 youths, aged 17-24, during the systematic examinations. Analyzing the nutritional status of youths aged 17-24 in Subotica in relation to the reference values of body mass index--BMI (kg/m2) we have registered 25.03% of youth with values of BMI < 20, 55.81% with values of BMI 20-25. Overweight (BMI > 25) was discovered in 19.16%. We have registered 3.34% of young men with systolic hypertension and 1.67% with diastolic hypertension. Increased values of total cholesterol were found in 21.69% and hypertriglyceridemia compared in 20.40% to the total number of examinees. Monitoring of nutritional status of youths by the application of consistent methodology and information system, might represent the measure of health care and the potential of the population. Besides, on the national level, it is an important indicator of health status and the basis for population nutrition improvement through the interventive and preventive programs of nutrition.

[A severe form of falciparum malaria associated with staphylococcal endocarditis].

A case is presented of a patient, aged 56 years, with severe form of imported malaria caused by Plasmodia falciparum. Hyperparasitemia of erythrocytes > 30% was registered, and during the course of the disease CNS dysfunction, severe anemia, acute renal failure, disseminated intravenous coagulation with manifest hemorrhagic syndrome, icterus, enterocolitis, pneumonia and staphylococcal endocarditis were developed Due to hyperparasitemia and numerous complications, antimalarial drugs such as quinidine (1,200 mg/day) and artemether (160 mg/day) were administered parenterally. Infected erythrocytes were exchanged with 2.5 litres of healthy erythrocytes suspension. Hemodialysis was also performed as well as nine-week antistaphylococcal therapy. During the treatment preparation of deplasmated blood, concentrated thrombocytes, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitates, human albumins and immunoglobulins were applied, along with the correction of electrolytic dysbalance, administration of diuretic, cardiotonic, antiarrhythmic, anxiolytic, antipsychotic and antidepressive drugs. Two months after the admission the patient was released from the Clinic in good condition, with normal clinical-laboratory findings.

Prostaglandins during haemodialysis treatment.

The prostaglandins 6-keto Pgf1 alpha,PG F2 alpha and thromboxane B2 before and during haemodialysis were studied by means of radioisotope method. A significant increase of 6-keto PGF1 alpha and decrease of PGF2 alpha was found. The concentration of thromboxane B2 was markedly, but not significantly decreased. This constellation inhibiting the thrombocytes aggregation and promoting vasodilation seems to be favourable as far as biocompatibility is concerned. Dialysis treatment caused no significant changes in prostaglandins concentration.

[The nephrotic syndrome in renal biopsies].

Among 1,499 representative renal biopsies in 278 cases nephrotic syndrome was diagnosed. In the latter only in 201 glomerulonephritis was confirmed by biopsy and in 77 (more than one quarter) the bioptic finding was different. The authors attempt to analyze the essential feature of nephrotic syndrome focused on the glomerular basal membrane and surrounding structures.
