Twenty-nine full-term near miss for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and 30 normal control infants underwent 24-hour polygraphic monitoring. Several types of respiratory events during sleep (eg, central, mixed, and obstructive apnea, periodic breathing) were defined and tabulated. Analysis of these respiratory variables and comparison of groups of near miss and control infants indicated that between 3 weeks and 4 1/2 months of age only one variable was consistently different at a statistically significant level: the number of mixed and obstructive apnea greater than 3 seconds during total sleep time. This study also showed an increase in mixed and obstructive respiratory events during sleep at 6 weeks of age in control as well as in near miss infants.
An infant girl followed up from birth to death at the University Medical Center had ""congenital stridor'' and a ""near miss for SIDS'' event at 3 months of age. As part of an ongoing SIDS research project, she underwent 24-hour polygraphic monitoring at 21 weeks of age. Sudden infant death occurred within 30 hours after the polygraphic study. Polygraphic data obtained from this infant are compared with those from control infants and other infants with near miss for SIDS who were of similar ages. The number of mixed and obstructive respiratory events during sleep was abnormally high on the infant's recording. Histologic findings, involving particularly the midline structures of the brain stem, are discussed.

A variety of neurologic deficits has been reversed following extracranial-intracranial arterial anastomoses. We are presenting an unusual case of complete resolution of a documented seven-year-old defect in the right homonymous visual fields following anastomosis of the superficial temporal artery and the angular branch of the middle cerebral artery.
The extractability of 125I-labelled plasma albumin from bone pieces and from powdered bone has been compared after both in vivo and in vitro incorporation. The results show that albumin is more readily extracted from bone pieces than from bone powder which implies that tissue disruption exposes additional protein adsorption sites. It is suggested that incorporation of plasma albumin into calcified matrix during bone formation occurs mainly as a result of its strong interaction with bone mineral.
The passage of tissue fluid through cortical bone has been investigated using radioactively labelled macromolecules as markers. The results suggest that in the cortex of young rabbit femur the movement of tissue fluid is in the same net direction as blood, mainly from the endosteal to the periosteal surface. Some albumin is incorporated from extravascular tissue fluid into calcified matrix at sites of bone formation. Polyvinylpyrrolidone, average molecular weight 35,000, is able to pass through extravascular tissue fluid in bone but is not incorporated into calcified matrix. In rabbits made vitamin D deficient, much less alblmin is retained in regions of bone formation than is the case with controls. Albumin adsorbs to the surface of calcium phosphate precipitates and it is suggested that this mechanism may be mainly responsible for its incorporation into bone.
1. The amount of albumin in extravascular tissue fluid in bone, kidney, intestine, skin and muscle and in plasma of young rabbits has been measured by radial immunodiffusion. 2. The majority of extravascular albumin in kidney, intestine, skin and muscle is exchangeable with plasma albumin, whereas in bone, only the proportion which is in tissue fluid is readily exchangeable; the remaining fraction in calcified matrix is more permanently fixed. 3. About 27% of the albumin in young bone is in tissue fluid, about 57% in calcified matrix and about 16% is intravascular. The total amount of extravascular albumin per unit mass of bone is similar to that found in soft tissues. 4. The volume of intravascular plasma in tissues was determined in two ways: from 51Cr-erythrocyte radioactivity and the venous haematocrit and from the '5 min 125I-fibrinogen space'. 5. The rate of egress of albumin from blood vessels has been estimated from the initial slope of the ratio of extravascular radioactivity in the tissue to plasma radioactivity plotted against time after injection of 125I-albumin. 6. The rate of clearance of the albumin in extravascular tissue fluid in bone is approximately once every hour. This is more rapid than in skin and muscle, comparable with intestine and less rapid than in kidney. 7. The amount of albumin incorporated into calcified matrix of bone per day is calculated to be less than 0-5% of the total albumin passing through the tissue fluid of bone per day.
Two studies, one using 242 psychiatric patients and the other 120 normal college students, were conducted to evaluate the predictive potential of three abbreviated MMPIs namely the Midi-Mult, Hugo abbreviated MMPI and Faschingbauer abbreviated MMPI. With regard to psychiatric inpatients, the Faschingbauer abbreviated MMPI-scale group means were markedly similar, highly correlated, and seemed to be a fairly accurate substitute for the MMPI in predicting clinical types. Numerous deficiencies were evident when using the Midi-Mult or Hugo abbreviated MMPI, especially with regard to classification analysis concerning validity, mean raw score scale differences and high point codes. In contrast, results from a normal college sample showed close statistical correspondence, high comparability in identifying valid and invalid profiles as well as high correspondence with respect to high point codes and general profile elevations regardless of which abbreviated form was used.

The radioactively labelled constituents present in bone matrix were compared 12 days after injection of either [(14)C]glucosamine or plasma [(14)C]glycoprotein. Both precursors are utilized in the synthesis of organic matrix by bone tissue. Cortical bone from animals injected with [(14)C]glucosamine contains radioactivity derived from glucosamine and plasma glycoproteins and all glycoprotein fractions are labelled. Plasma [(14)C]glycoprotein labels the less acidic glycoproteins to a greater extent than the more acidic components. An antibody has been raised against the less-acidic-glycoprotein fraction of bone. The latter contains a glycoprotein of alpha-mobility that appears to be concentrated specifically in bone tissue and which is present also in plasma. This alpha-glycoprotein accounts for a large proportion of the components labelled and retained in bone matrix after [(14)C]glucosamine injection.
