Twenty-four patients with maxillary squamous cell carcinoma were treated with 50 micrograms of phytohemagglutinin (PHA), saturated into pieces of gelatin sponge, and applied to the maxillary sinus which was in advance surgically exposed via the peroral route. Treatment was combined with cobalt 60 irradiation at 4,000 rads (200 rads X 20 doses over a one month period) and concurrent arterial infusion of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) with a total dosage of 5,000 mg (250 mg X 20 doses). After 20 treatment with phytohemagglutinin, gross examination showed that tumors were no longer apparent in 83.3% of the cases treated with PHA vs. 52.6% in the control group without PHA. On histological examination, 66.6% in the PHA group showed no signs of tumors vs. 15.8% in the control group. Microscopically, the disappearance of the tumors was frequently observed in tumor of T2 more than that of T3 in extent of primary tumor. No side effects were observed nor was there a significant difference between the control group and the PHA group in the 3-year crude survival rate (control group: 68.4%; PHA group: 62.5%).
It was the aim of this trial to study the effect of intranasal beclomethasone dipropionate on symptoms and signs of perennial allergic rhinitis in Japanese patients. In a multicenter trial 183 patients, children and adults, were treated with placebo or with 400 microgram beclomethasone dipropionate a day for 2 weeks. The active treatment had an effect on all nasal symptoms: sneezing, nose blowing, and blockage being reduced to 34%, 44% and 63% (P < 0.01) of the values in the placebo group. A considerable carry-over effect was found, suggesting a group comparative design to be preferable for a cross over trial for the study of intranasal steroids. The beclomethasone dipropionate therapy had a significant inhibitory effect on the immediate response to nasal allergen provocation. The number of secretion eosinophils was reduced during treatment, and the appearance of the mucous membrane tended to normalize. Local side effects were few and insignificant. It is concluded that beclomethasone dipropionate is a valuable drug for the treatment of perennial allergic rhinitis.
A search for novel insecticides has yielded the milbemycins, a new family of macrolide antibiotics with insecticidal and acaricidal activity. They are produced in submerged cultures of Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. aureolacrimosus. Fermentation studies on the strain were conducted in shaken flasks and 30-liter jar fermentors. From the culture broth 13 milbemycins were purified to homogeneity by column and thin-layer chromatography on silica gel and alumina. Physico-chemical data, such as mass spectra, UV and IR absorption spectra, optical rotations and melting points of the milbemycins are described.

Twenty-two cat hearts were perfused according to Langendorff technique and myocardial regional ischemia was induced by occlusion of left anterior coronary artery. Separation of particulate (bound) from soluble (free) fraction, and subsequent fractionation into plasma membranes, lysosomes, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria were performed by sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation. By ischemia for 60 min, particle-bound activity of cathepsin D decreased from 4.2 +/- 0.24 U/mg protein to 3.2 +/- 0.31 U/mg protein (p less than 0.01). Likewise, the particle-bound activity of beta-glucuronidase decreased from 11.9 +/- 0.92 U/mg protein to 6.2 +/- 1.28 U/mg protein (p less than 0.01). Accordingly, free/bound activity ratios of cathepsin D increased from 0.8 to 1.9 and beta-glucuronidase from 0.9 to 2.8, respectively. Conspicuous fall from 12.8 +/- 0.6 U/mg protein to 8.0 +/- 0.97 U/mg protein (p less than 0.01) in absolute specific activity of cathepsin D bound to the lysosomal fraction, presents definitive evidence of lysosomal release of the acid hydrolases during the early phase of myocardial ischemia. Electron microscopic observation of the ischemic myocytes revealed ultrastructural alterations of the lysosomes suggestive of autophagic degradation of various subcellular organelles.

In order to elucidate whether basophilic cells in nasal secretion belong to blood basophil or tissue mast cell, basophilic cells in the blood, nasal secretion, and nasal mucous membrane were electron microscopically observed in patients with house dust nasal allergy. The majority of basophilic cells in the nasal secretion was identical with the blood basophil in structure. The blood basophils pass through the vessels and emigrate in the mucous blanket in allergy.

Because no simple and precise method is available to test intensity of the reaction resulted from a nasal provocative test in diagnosis of nasal allergy, comparisons were made among the conventional test methods of rhinoscopy (RS), rhinomanometry (RM) and the carbon powder elimination test (CET) devised by the authors. The rhinoscopy shows high positive rates and has advantages being free from any special equipment, prolonged time or the patients' cooperation, but also had disadvantages such as requirement of skill of examiner and problems in objectivity. The carbon powder elimination test is a preferable method in that it is not only equipped with the advantages of the rhinoscopy but also makes up for its disadvantages, but a disadvantage of CET is requirement of longer time than RS. Rhinomanometry had lower positive rates and requires a special equipment, prolonged time and the skillful patients' cooperation. The disadvantage is that its impracticableness in many patients--26% impracticableness even in adult patients, but the method is fully objective. From these findings the value of Carbon Powder Elimination Test in judging provoked reactions is recognized.
