Heat-labile virus inhibitor (HLI) in normal sera of various mammalian species capable of neutralizing variola (VRV) and Newcastle disease viruses (NDV) was studied immunologically. After sucrose density gradient centrifugation of guinea pig serum, the HLI activity against VRV and that against NDV were both demonstrated in the same region sedimenting fastor than IgM. Absorption with partially purified VRV or NDV removed the HLI activity on the homologous virus but not that on the other. Prior saturation of virions with specific antibody blocked the absorption of HLI, suggesting a specific competition for binding site (s) between specific antibody and HLI. The HLI level against variola virus was checked in connection with immunization with vaccinia virus. In human primary vaccination, the HLI level rose sharply within 4 weeks after vaccination, turning to decline gradually to settle at a level higher than that of the conventional neutralizing antibody (NA). In cases of human revaccination, a sharp rise of HLI started 4 days after vaccination and reached the highest level within 7 days, preceding the rise of conventional NA level which occurred about 3 days later. Three rabbits with negative HLI activity prior to vaccinia immunization obtained an HLI activity within 2 weeks, which showed a sharp rise up to 6-8 weeks. One rabbit with a positive prior HLI activity also showed a sharp rise of the HLI activity after immunization. In all rabbits the final HLI level was identical with that of conventional NA. Groups of guinea pigs were immunized with either VRV or NDV. Rises of the HLI level after immunization were observed in all animals, the activity being restricted to the homologous virus used in the immunization. Complement requiring NA was detected during the course of immunization but its behavior was different from that of HLI. The above observations were interpreted to suggest a ubiquitous presence of HLI as a specific reactive agent and its role at an earliest stage of immune response.
Lipopolysaccharide antigens were extracted from heated cell extracts of several serotypes of Pseudonomas aeruginosa. Indirect hemagglutination with the extracts indicated specific reactivity with sera from rabbits immunized with homologous serotypes of P. aeruginosa. Sera from healthy adults and patients infected with P. aeruginosa were studied subsequently and shown to possess antibodies against P. aeurginosa. In patients infected with P. aeruginosa type E, indirect hemagglutination antibody against type E was resistant to 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) and classified as immunoglobulin G. In patients infected with any other type of P. aeruginosa and in healthy adults, it was sensitive to 2-ME and classified as immunoglobulin M. The antibody in the seven patients infected with P. aeruginosa was titrated during the course of infection with lipopolysaccharide antigen prepared from the infecting strain. As a result, all patients either possessed 2-ME-resistant antibody or showed antibody rise to homotypic antigen during the infection. However, no patient showed 2-ME-resistant antibody against hetero-typic lipopolysaccharide antigens. In hospitalized patients, the incidence of anti body against type E, G, and I Pseudomonas strains was greater than that against type A. In particular, 2-ME-resistant antibody to all four serotypes was detected at a higher rate in hospitalized patients than in healthy adults.

With the parameters of a flow-volume and a volume-time curve, the discriminant analysis of bronchial asthma is described. The subjects were classified into three groups (healthy adults, mild asthmatic patients and moderates ones). The difference of the mean vectors of the parameters of the three groups was made clear by the selection methods of the discriminant analysis between any two of the groups both with 6 parameters (%FVC, FEV1.0%, peak flow rate (PF), flow rate at 50% of FVC (V50), flow rate at 25% of FVC (V25), and V50/V25) and with 8 (6 parameters mentioned above and V75, V10). Forced expiratory volume in 1 second percent (FEV1.0%) or V50 was selected at the first step with 6 parameters, and V75 was selected at the first step with 8 parameters. Probabilities of misclassification with 8 parameters were lower than those with 6 ones and the probability of misclassification at the discriminant analysis between healthy adults and mild asthmatic patients with 8 parameters was 15.75% at the final step.
The effect of Cd2+ on the respiration of rat liver mitochondria was investigated. The uncoupling effect of Cd2+ was partially restored by the addition of Mg2+. The influence of Cd2+ on adenine nucleotide concentrations in the reaction mixture consisting of mitochondria and ATP was also studied using high performance liquid chromatography. In the presence of added Mg2+, a two-fold increase in AMP concentration was brought about by the addition of Cd2+. There was a concomitant decrease in ATP. In the prence of added ADP, an increase in AMP concentration was also brought about by addition of Cd2+. The results are discussed in relation to ATPase and adenylate kinase activity in mitochondria.
Levels of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) activitiy in a sample of Japanese people were determined. Blood samples were taken from new-born infants, preschool children, young and old people who had no apparent diseases and also from three anemic patients. Erythrocyte SOD activities in different age groups had a nearly normal distribution. Females had slightly lower activities than males, although the difference was statistically insignificant. The distributions of SOD activities were 12.6 +/- 2.7 (m +/- SD) unit/mg Hb in young people and 11.4 +/- 3.0 in old people, indicating that erythrocyte SOD activity falls with aging. Because of low concentration of hemoglobin, SOD activities of old people expressed as unit/ml blood were much lower than in young people. Three anemic patients had slightly lower SOD activity (unit/mg Gb), but the difference was not significant.
The authors attempted to determine if the organic sulfur compounds usually contained in a crude oil could serve as a marker of oil pollution in fish. Eels (Anguilla Japonica Temminck et Schlegel) were maintained in a controlled laboratory environment of water with a suspension of crude oil. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and mass chromatography of eel flesh extract showed the presence of organic sulfur compounds of alkyl-(from mono- to pentametyl) benzothiophenes, dibenzothiophene and alkyl-(from mono- to trimethyl) dibenzothiophenes, and other organic sulfur compounds of alkyl-(from mono- to pentamethyl) naphthalenes.

Two cases of postoperative systemic candidiasis in neurosurgical practice are reported. Postoperatively these patients showed signs and symptoms of systemic infection and unfortunately died in spite of intensive chemotherapy. In both cases systemic candidiasis became evident by histological examinations at autopsy. Long use of antibiotics and aggressive nosocomy were supposed to be the cause of the systemic candidiasis. The authors emphasized a high possibility of opportunistic fungal infection in neurosurgical practice. The symptomatology, treatment and prevention of this disease are also discussed.
During the past nine years the authors have seen 140 cases of ruptured intracranial aneurysm. In order to assess the EEG abnormalities in the chronic period after SAH, 45 patients were examined with 108 serial EEG recordings. Cases of early death were excluded from this study. Seven cases of SAH of unknown origin were also examined as a control group. Range of age was from 28 to 79 years. All of these patients except one were able to return to their previous activities. Results and conclusion were as follows. (1) The period of EEG study varied from a few weeks to nine years after SAH with the average being ten months. (2) The overall incidence of abnormal EEG was 82.4% in Group A (aneurysm) and 83.3% in Group B (unknown origin). (3) EEG abnormalities were divided into two patterns: focal slow wave (sporadic, polymorphous theta and delta wave) and focal spike, located mainly in the frontal and/or temporal areas. (4) Symptomatic epilepsy occurred in 6 cases of this series (13.3%) with onset from 8 months to 3 1/2 years after SAH. (5) Recent papers on microsurgical treatment of intracranial aneurysms have reported excellent results. Few studies, however, have dealt with EEG in the chronic period after SAH. The importance of EEG in the follow-up study of SAH is stressed because of the high incidence and long persistence of EEG abnormalities and because of the occurrence of epilepsy after SAH.
