The majority of giant cell tumors occurs in the long bones, especially around the knee, and only 1.4-1.8% of cases are found in the skull. In this communication, a case of giant cell tumor of the temporal bone is reported because of a rarity of the lesion in the skull. The 37-year-old housewife was admitted to our clinic complaining of swelling in right temporal region which had gradually developed over a two-month period. On examination, there was a swelling about 5cm in diameter beneath right temporal muscle; its surface was smooth and its consistency was hard. Tenderness was found in its center. Routine x-ray of the skull showed osteolytic lesion in right temporal bone with relatively clear margins. Computed tomography demonstrated heterogeneously high-density mass in right temporal bone and right middle fossa. The tumor located mainly within the temporal bone at the middle fossa, and intracranial epidural space at the convexity. After bolus injection of contrast material, the tumor of temporal bone and the peripheral portion of the intracranial tumor were enhanced markedly. Right external carotid angiograms disclosed tumor stain in capillary and venous phases. Abnormal RI uptake was disclosed by bone scintigrams with 99mTC-methylene diphosphonic acid. Her preoperative diagnosis was calvarial tumor with intracranial extension. A right fronto-temporal osteoplastic craniotomy was performed. The tumor located within the temporal bone and in epidural space which invaded temporal muscle and underlying dura. The tumor was elastic soft and vascular with central necrosis. The tumor was extirpated totally including surrounding temporal muscle and dura. Microscopic examination of the operative specimen revealed giant cell tumor of the skull. Therefore, she was treated with 60CO irradiation (3,000 rads) to the temporal region. In the 13 months since the completion of treatment, there has been no sign of recurrence nor metastasis. Giant cell tumor of the skull were reviewed with special references to diagnosis and treatment. Computed tomographic findings of this tumor were also discussed briefly.

The relationship between the activities of both pyrimidine 5'-nucleotidase (Py5N) and delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) in erythrocytes and the concentration of lead in blood was investigated in the mice which were given ad libitum a drinking water containing lead of 10 to 500 ppm, for 30 days. From these results, it was demonstrated that the erythrocyte Py5N activity is inhibited by lead and its activity level is negatively correlated with the concentration of lead in blood (r = -0.78). In addition, it was suggested that the erythrocyte Py5N activity is a better indicator in the exposure to relatively high lead concentration while the ALA-D is a more sensitive indicator for evaluating the lead exposure of low and moderate levels.

D-Lactate dehydrogenase, the starting enzyme for carbon and energy metabolism in dissimilatory sulfate-reducing bacteria, has been purified 36-fold from the soluble fraction of the sonicate of Desulfovibrio vulgaris, Miyazaki. The enzyme is specific for D-lactate (Km = 0.8 mM) and DL-2-hydroxybutyrate (probably its D-isomer) as the electron donor substrate. It reduces, in the presence of lactate, various artificial electron acceptors such as 1-methoxyphenazinium methyl sulfate, ferricyanide, tetrazolium dyes, methylene blue, and 2,6-dichlorophenol-indophenol. When 2 mol of ferricyanide was reduced, 1 mol of pyruvate was produced during the reaction. Among natural electron carriers, only cytochrome c-553 isolated from the same organism can be reduced by the enzyme. The ferric complex of pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate can act as an electron acceptor if cytochrome c-553 is present in the reaction system. NAD+, NADP+, FAD, FMN, cytochrome c3, high-molecular-weight cytochrome, eucaryotic cytochromes c (yeast and horse) and O2 could not be reduced. The enzyme does not have any diaphorase activity. The D-lactate dehydrogenase of D. vulgaris must therefore be named D-lactate:ferricytochrome c-553 oxidoreductase [EC subclass 1.1.2]. A similar enzyme exists in the formate dehydrogenase-less mutant of D. vulgaris, Miyazaki, and in D. vulgaris, Hildenborough.
Computed tomography (CT) scans of 49 patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) secondary to ruptured aneurysms were reviewed. Subarachnoid blood was detected in 95% when CT was performed within 5 days after the bleeding. Prediction of the site of the ruptured aneurysm from distribution of the cisternal blood varied from 92% for the anterior cerebral artery aneurysms to 70% for the middle cerebral and 47% for the internal carotid artery aneurysms. Following plain CT scans, postcontrast studies were performed in 27 patients. Aneurysms were directly visualized in 8 cases and subarachnoid enhancement was noted in 21. In 3 cases, subarachnoid enhancement made possible a correct diagnosis of SAH in the absence of evidence of cisternal blood on precontrast CT scans.
Anticomplement immunofluorescence (ACIF) was tested for its use for the titration of antibody against varicella-zoster virus (VZV). ACIF antibody responses of patients with VZV infection were specific for VZV antigen and heterotypic responses to herpes simplex virus type-1 and cytomegalovirus antigens were not observed. Comparative studies of ACIF, membrane immunofluorescence (MIF) and indirect immunofluorescence (IF), using acetone-fixed antigen, were carried out with nonimmune sera and convalescent sera of patients who had recovered from varicella, herpes zoster and Rumsey Hunt disease. Nonspecific staining occurred with some nonimmune sera at a 1:4 dilution in the MIF and IF tests, after freezing and thawing of the serum, but not in the ACIF test. The antibody titers in convalescent sera agreed well in these three methods and the highest titer was obtained by MIF. The titers in ACIF and IF were similar but the ACIF antibody decreased earlier than the IF antibody during convalescence. On the other hand there was a discrepancy between the titers of ACIF and those of MIF and IF antibody in the sera of healthy adults, all sera with titers higher than 10 in the MIF and IF tests had titers below 10 in the ACIF test. The average titer of ACIF antibody declined to less than 10 with increasing age (13 to more than 20 years), whereas the MIF antibody increased during the same period of life.
