Localization of sudanophil material at the sites of calcification in dentine, and the compact bone and epiphyseal cartilage plate of tibia in the rat given beryllium carbonate.

The localization of sudanophil material at dentine, the compact bone and epiphyseal cartilage plate of tibia of rat given beryllium carbonate was examined. Sudanophil material was seen at the boundary parts between dentine and widened predentine, and between widened preosseous matrix and calcified bone, but it was not seen at the area corresponding to the zone of provisional calcification. These facts suggest that the localization of sudanophil material in hard tissue of rat with Be rickets was similar to that in vitamin D deficient-induced rickets. This sudanophil material was not disappeared by the enzymes such as papain, pepsin and hyaluronidase as described in vitamin D deficient-induced rickets (Irving, 1960, 1963). Accordingly, it was suggested that the substance was not proteins and mucopolysaccharide.

Problems involved in grading the severity of hemophilia by test results.

Some problems involved in grading the severity of hemophilia were discussed. No definite correlation existed between the clinical severity of hemophilia and the results of coagulation tests (activity of deficient factors, whole blood clotting time, thromboplastin screening test). There was also no correlation between the presence or absence of oral bleeding or hemarthrosis and the test results. It was concluded that the clinical severity of the disease can be graded more reasonably on the basis of clinical hemorrhagic symptoms than according to the activity of deficient factors.

Coagulation-fibrinolysis system in man during Ethrane anaesthesia and surgery.

The coagulation-fibrinolysis system was studied during Ethrane anaesthesia and gynaecological operations in 20 patients. No particular change was noted in the platelet counts, which remained within the normal range. In the coagulation system, no appreciable change was observed except for the partial thromboplastin time (P.T.T.) which was significantly short-ended, both 30 minutes after the start of operation and in the recovery room when the patient had completely awakened from the anaesthesia. In the fibrinolytic system, the plasminogen level and the fibrinogen level declined significantly. It is considered that the fibrinolytic system is prominently accelerated under Ethrane anaesthesia, but the haemostatic mechanism works in such a manner that bleeding is controlled. However, Ethrane anaesthesia should be avoided or pre-operative administration of an antiplasmic agent recommended for patients with an abnormal haemostatic mechanism.
