[Behavioral and EEG effects of Zingiber mioga Roscoe (water soluble fraction) (author's transl)].

Behavioral and EEG effects of water soluble fraction extracted from Zingiber mioga Roscoe (Z. mioga) were investigated in mice, rats and rabbits. Z. mioga was dissolved in isotonic saline and given i.p. into mice and rats, and i.v. into rabbits, respectively. Z. mioga at doses of 50 approximately 400 mg/kf produced a marked reduction in locomotor activity of mice in the open-field test. The peak time of reduction was 30 min after the injection. In mice, Z. mioga at the same doses lowered significantly the rectal temperature and prolonged the sleeping time induced by thiopental-Na (40 mg/kg, i.v.). Z. mioga at a dose of 400 mg/kg had no anticonvulsant effects and it produced a slight muscle relaxation in mice. Z. mioga at doses of 50 approximately 200 mg/kg induced a significant inhibition of the active conditioned avoidance response of the rat in a shuttle box without affecting the unconditioned escape response. In the step-down method, however, the passive conditioned avoidance response was rarely affected by Z. mioga, but the response was suppressed by chlorpromazine. In rabbits with chronically implanted electrodes, Z. mioga at doses of 20--30 mg/kg induced a drowsy pattern of spontaneous EEG, ilel high voltage slow waves in the neocortex and amygdala, and desynchronization in the case of hippocampal theta waves. The EEG arousal response to the external auditory stimulation was inhibited by the same doses of Z. mioga, whereas it failed to suppress the arousal response to either the midbrain reticular or posterior hypothalamic stimulation, as with chlorpromazine. Neither the recruiting response nor the photic driving response were affected by Z. mioga. On the other hand, the limbic after-discharges to the hippocampal or amygdaloid stimulation were enhanced by Z. mioga as well as chlorpromazin, but they were inhibited by diazepam. The EEG effects of Z. mioga were qualitatively similar to chlorpromazine, but not to diazepam. These results indicate the similarity of behavioral and EEG effects of Z. mioga to those seen with neuroleptics such as chlorpromazine.

A new surgical approach to extensive arterial occlusion of lower extremity--femoro-popliteal open endarterectomy with arteriovenous shunt.

A revascularized surgery for extensive arterial occlusive lesions of the lower extremities, namely open endarterectomy of the occluded femoro-popliteal artery with arteriovenous shunt, was devised. The procedure is specially indicated to the extensive arterial occlusion of the lower extremity for which the conventional reconstructive vascular surgery is not applicable. The patency of the reconstructed femoro-popliteal arteries are ensured by virture of an arteriovenous shunt and newly developed collaterals from the reopened genicular network is expected to provide effective blood flow to peripheral parts. From 1967 to 1975, this procedure was applied to 59 extremities in 53 patients, all of whom had extensive arterial occlusion from the femoral artery to the periphery with impending ulcer and severe rest pain. Fourty-five out of 59 extremities had remarkable improvement of the ischemic symptoms and signs at the time of discharge. Long-term effectiveness was shown in 34 out of 59 extremities or 58 per cent.

Comparison of carcinogenicity of N-alkyl-N'-nitro-N-nitroso-guanidines.

Carcinogenicity of seven homologs of N-alkyl-N'-nitrosoguanidine (N-alkyl-NNG), namely, N-methyl-NNG, N-propyl-NNG, N-butyl-NNG, N-isobutyl-NNG, N-pentyl-NNG, and N-hexyl-NNG, was examined by injecting the compounds subcutaneously into rats. All of them except N-isobutyl-NNG and N-hexyl-NNG were carcinogenic, but N-ethyl-NNG followed by N-methyl-NNG were stronger carcinogens than those with longer alkyl chains.

A secular trend in age at menarche in Sendai city and its surroundings.

A secular trend in age at menarche was examined for 1,333 women living in Sendai city and its surroundings by applying the birth-year cohort analysis and the cross-sectional probit analysis. The trend toward younger menarcheal ages was consistently observed by both analyses, and it started off soon after the second World War. The speed was 0.11 year/year for the observation period of 1946 to 1966.

Abdominal aneurysm with aortoduodenal fistula.

Two patients having the abdominal aneurysm with aortoduodenal fistula were treated surgically, but graft infection occurred. One patient died about 6 months after and the other about one year after the operation due to massive hemorrhage from the postoperative aortointestinal fistula. The difficulties in the treatment of the aortoduodenal fistula were discussed.

Membranous glomerulonephritis associated with active liver cirrhosis both involved by HBs antigen.

This is a case report of a 35-year-old female who showed a relatively short clinical course of severe liver cirrhosis and proteinuria. On light microscopical studies of autopsy material, besides active postnecrotic type liver cirrhosis, typical membranous glomerulonephritis was found. Immunofluorescent study disclosed not only clustered HBsAg (hepatitis type B surface antigen) in occasional hepatic cells but also beaded granular type deposition of HBsAg, IgG, IgM, IgA and complement C3 along renal glomerular basement membrane (GBM). Electron microscopical study disclosed multiple particulated material in occasional inclusion bodies of hepatic cells and in subepithelial and subendothelial dense deposits along the GBM. Enzymatic immunoelectron microscopical study confirmed these particles especially along the GBM being HBsAg themselves. It was concluded that HBsAg-Ab (antibody) complex was the pathogenetic factor responsible for the glomerular change of this particular case. Although HBsAg and Ab were examined to be negative in serum throughout the patient's clinical course, the possibility of the presence of circulating HBsAg-Ab complex in serum was discussed.
