Graft-versus-host reactions in mice. 3. Epithelioid and multinucleated giant cells of thymic origin.

Thymus cells from C3H donor mice were infused into lethally irradiated (C3H x C57BL/10)F(1) hybrid mice. Light and electron microscopic examination of the lymphoid tissues of recipients revealed the presence of epithelioid and multinucleated giant cells in addition to lymphocytes and histiocytes. Serial transplantation of thymus-derived cells into irradiated F(1) hybrid mice resulted in a preponderance of epithelioid cells over lymphocytes. Epithelioid cells, as well as lymphocytes and histiocytes, incorporated (3)H-thymidine, indicating that they were actively proliferating. Following transplantation of CBA-T6T6 thymocytes into irradiated (C3H x C57BL/10)F(1) mice, karyotypic analysis of host lymphoid tissues indicated that all dividing cells were of donor origin. Whereas bone marrow is known to give rise to epithelioid cells in the absence of thymic influences, the thymus must also contain precursors of epithelioid cells.

Abscessed splenic hydatid cyst: sonographic and CT findings.

Splenic hydatid cyst abscess formation is extremely rare. We present a surgically proved case of abscessed hydatid cyst of the spleen with its appearance on sonography and computed tomography (CT). Although both imaging methods do not confirm a diagnosis of abscessed splenic hydatidosis, they are valuable examinations to support the diagnosis and define the extent of disease. Percutaneous drainage of splenic abscessed lesions must be avoided when hydatid disease is suspected.

Clonal differences among erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes in Spain.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the high levels of erythromycin resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes found in Spain are due to the introduction and spread of one or more clones. Phenotypic and genotypic techniques were used to characterize all erythromycin-resistant S. pyogenes (ErR) isolated in Gipuzkoa, Spain, in the last 10 years and 128 ErR isolated in Vitoria and Madrid during 1996. Of 437 ErR, 97% had the M phenotype; all 283 of the strains studied had the mefA determinant of resistance. After biotyping, T serotyping, emm typing, and genotyping, four major clones were detected. Clones B (biotype I, type T4, emm4, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis [PFGE] II) and D (biotype V, type T8.25, emm75, PFGE IV) comprised 78.8% of all ErR. The resistance of S. pyogenes to erythromycin was mainly due to an efflux mechanism of resistance (M phenotype); few clones were responsible for it.

Laser in situ keratomileusis for myopia of -1.50 to -6.00 diopters.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for the correction of low and moderate myopia and astigmatism using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser with a modified algorithm. METHODS: Three hundred and ninety-six eyes of 257 patients with myopia ranging from -1.50 to -6.00 D and astigmatism of no more than 4.00 D were included. Manifest spherical equivalent refraction, uncorrected and spectacle-corrected visual acuity were assessed at 1 month (357 eyes, 90%), 3 months (220 eyes, 56%), and 6 months (168 eyes, 42%) after LASIK. RESULTS: Mean preoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -3.60 +/- 1.27 D and mean cylinder was -1.01 +/- 1.08 D. Mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was -0.12 +/- 0.31 D and mean cylinder was -0.19 +/- 0.33 D. At 6 months follow-up, 158 eyes (94%) had a mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction within +/- 0.50 D of emmetropia; 168 eyes (100%) were within +/- 1.00 D. Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/20 or better in 81% (136 eyes) and 20/40 or better in 100%. Two eyes (1.2%) lost 1 line of spectacle-corrected visual acuity due to a decentered ablation. No eye lost 2 or more lines of spectacle-corrected visual acuity. CONCLUSION: Our modified LASIK algorithm with the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser resulted in safe and predictable outcomes for treatment of low and moderate amounts of myopia and astigmatism.
