Transepithelial elimination of elastic fibres in the regenerated human epidermis.

The elimination of elastic fibres through the regenerated epidermis of human skin was studied using histochemical, immunofluorescent and electron microscopic techniques. No abnormality was detected in the elastic fibres which were being eliminated, but they were in direct contact with the cytomembranes of some lymphocytes and were captured by histiocytes. It seemed that these elastic fibres were recognized as a foreign substance and provoked inflammation. Lymphocytes and histiocytes may play an important role in the transepithelial elimination of elastic fibres.

The role of fibrinolytic enzymes in inflammation and paranasal mucous membrane.

The distribution and role of tissue plasminogen activator (TA) and proactivator (PA) in various diseases of the nasal and paranasal cavity were investigated. The stronger the inflammatory and proliferative response of the paranasal mucous membrane, the weaker was the fibrinolytic activity of TA. The fibrinolytic activity of PA tended to be stronger than TA activity. It is considered that PA may play an important role in inflammatory enlargement and proliferation of the paranasal mucous membrane, but does not play an important role in carcinogenic enlargement and proliferation of the nasal and paranasal mucous membrane.

Effects of antioxidants on the TBA reaction of various rat liver homogenates.

The TBA reaction of physiologically normal (young and aged) rat liver homogenate appears to be catalyzed mainly by nonheme iron which is sensitive to EDTA, whereas some iron species which are not affected by EDTA seem to be functioning as catalysts in the TBA reaction of drug-intoxicated (CCl4, HCB) liver homogenates.

Interocular transfer of cardiac conditioning in the pigeon.

Pigeons received 30 pairings of a light stimulus (CS) and a brief electric foot shock (US) or random presentations of 30 CSs and 30 USs monocularly. The birds that received the paired presentations showed a clear increase of heart rate during CS presentation periods and maintained the conditioned cardiac response when tested with the naive eye; whereas, those which received the random presentation indicated no increase of heart rate and did not show any systematic change of cardiac response when tested with the naive eye. These results demonstrate interocular transfer of the cardiac conditioning in the pigeon.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and its tissue culture study -- ultrastructural, enzyme histochemical and immunological study.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans arizing in the thigh of a 23-year-old female is reported with an investigation of tumor cell character by electron microscopy, enzyme histochemistry, immunological and in vitro tissue culture techniques. The tumor tissue showed histologically a peculiar storiform arrangement of plump spindle cells with dense proliferation. Electron microscope revealed histiocytic cell structures of some tumor cells: lysosomes, phagosomes, and sparse rough endoplasmic reticula. They revealed diffuse positive reactions to acid phosphatase (Ac Pase) and non-specific esterase. Short-time culture of the tumor tissue indicated rather round and polygonal cells admixed with spindle cells, positive to Ac Pase and non-specific esterase with diffuse reaction. Most of the round cells possessed Fc and C3 receptors on their surface and phagocytic activity. Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is probably a histiocytic tumor and structural characteristics of schwann cells were not recognized.
