Strain differences in rat liver (UDP-glucuronyltransferase activity towards androsterone.

Male Donryu, Wistar King rats showed discontinuous variations in hepatic microsomal UDP-glucuronyltransferase activities towards androsterone, but not towards testosterone, bilirubin, phenolphthalein and 4-nitrophenol. Fresh microsomal fraction with a low transferase activity towards androsterone formed 0.049--0.080 nmole of glucuronide/min per mg of protein, whereas fresh microsomal fraction with a high transferase activity towards androsterone formed 0.335--0.557 nmol of glucuronide/min per mg of protein. The microsomal fraction with low enzyme activity towards androsterone was not stimulated by treatment with Triton X-100 or freezing and thawing. In contrast, male Long Evans and Sprague-Dawley rats did not exhibit such diversity.

Gas chromatographic separation of hydroxylated N-nitrosamines.

Derivatives of six hydroxylated N-nitrosamines were prepared by acylation, trifluoroacylation, trimethylsilylation and methylation, and the volatilities and sensitivities of these derivatives on gas chromatographic detection were compared. All six nitrosamines were successfully derivatized by either acylation or trimethylsilylation. The acylated derivatives were easy to prepare; in addition, acylation was more specific than trimethylsilylation for the reaction with hydroxyl groups in the molecule.

Disulphates of 16-oxygenated ketonic C19 steroids as biliary metabolities of androsterone sulphate in female rats.

The chemical synthesis of 16beta-hydroxyandrosterone was described preparatory to studies of the disulphates of the 16-oxygenated ketonic C19 steroids present in the bile of female rats dosed with [3H]androsterone sulphate. The biliary metabolites were separated by chromatography on Sephadex LH-20 to afford monosulphate and diconjugate fractions. After solvolysis of the diconjugate fraction, the liberated steroids were separated by partition chromatography on Celite 545 and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectometry. In addition to 3alpha, 17beta-dihydroxy-5alpha-androstan-16-one isolated previously, 16beta-hydroxyandrosterone was identified as a disulphate.

Simultaneous stereophotogrammetric and angiographic fundus camera.

We developed an apparatus for serial, simultaneous stereophotogrammetric fundus angiography by modifying a fundus camera. The paired stereoangiograms obtained by this system provided satisfactory stereoscopy and fair depth of field. With this system, mounting and filing of slides were easy. Accurate photogrammetric analysis of the fundus can be performed. Clinical results were impressive in both young and old subjects with fully dilated pupils.
