The anti-hypertensive and tolerance of penbutolol, a non-selective beta-blocker of long duration and endowed with an ISA effect were compared with those of atenolol, a cardioselective beta-blocker without ISA effect, in two groups of 20 patients each suffering from slight-to-moderate essential primary hypertension selected on the basis of a clinico-experimental design of open randomised type. The two drugs presented a similar anti-hypertensive effect which attained its peak expression in the second week of treatment. As for side-effects, penbutolol during treatment presented better tolerance than atenolol. Further, both penbutolol administered once daily at a dose of 40 mg/die, and atenolol, administered once daily at a dose of 100 mg/die proved to possess satisfactory anti-hypertensive activity justifying its use in a single daily dose.

In order to find out whether there is any relationship between blood pressure, body mass index, weight, heart rate in youth and arterial hypertension later on in life, 212 subjects (16-26 years of age) were re-examined 2 years later. Previous blood pressure level were very significantly associated with present blood pressure levels A relationship was also discovered with the other parameters measured 2 years earlier: weight, body mass index and heart rate. These findings confirm the fact that it is possible to detect future hypertensives early in life and to take effective preventive measures.
Numerous factors may influence the sympathetic and pressure response to physical exercise, age, sex, type of activity carried on and training for example. Training, in particular is considered to reduce both adrenergic and pressure response. Plasma catecholamine levels and the haemodynamic response to the hand-grip test have therefore been evaluated in a group of young athletes, compared with a group of non-trained youths. The results confirmed that young athletes have a lower sympathetic and haemodynamic response to the isometric exercise and this is accompanied by improved cardiac performance. The value of the hand-grip test is underlined as a method of investigation able to evaluate the training level attained by the athlete.

1143 patients were selected among atopic outpatients followed up at our Institution (Clinical Immunology-University of Brescia) on the basis of documented sensitization to one or more inhalant allergens. All patients had been investigated by skin prick tests employing a large panel of allergens. Specific sensitization had been confirmed by clinical history and when necessary by RAST. The patients were investigated retrospectively for the prevalence of sensitization to Paretaria. 880 patients were sensitized to one or more pollens and among these 427 (48.5) to Parietaria. Among pollen monosensitized patients (with no concomitant allergy to other inhalants), 222 were sensitized to Graminacee and 125 to Parietaria. In these groups there was no difference in prevalence of asthma. Our study thereby shows that the prevalence of sensitization to Parietaria in Brescia is higher than described in other cities in North Italy. Our findings are supported by pollen concentration in atmosphere as determined by Burkard pollen trap.

The authors present the surgical technique for the correction of Hirschsprung disease following SOAVE's original description. A series of 270 cases observed in 20 years at the Pediatric Surgery Department of the "Instituto Giannina Gaslini" in Genova, Italy, are examined. These cases, all treated by surgery, were followed up in long term for more than one year both clinically and radiologically. Additionally 73 cases treated from 1977 on were also followed up with the aid of ano-rectal electro-manometry. The most recent diagnostic aspects are discussed, such as ano-manometry, and some conclusions are drawn about long term results.
The action of the most common diuretics is reviewed with emphasis on precise indications in the case of cardiac deficiency, arterial hypertension and certain forms of angina pectoris. These drugs are judged extremely useful if the necessary precautions are taken at all times. Disturbances to the water-electrolyte balance may however occur during treatment and changes in the magnesium electrolyte are described in the light of recent developments in our knowledge of the physiopathology of diuretics.
