The responses in the left ventricular systolic time intervals following digoxin administration (0.5 mg i.v.) were studied in 11 patients with chronic renal failure and hypertension. The control group comprised 11 patients with mild essential hypertension. There were no clinical signs of congestive heart failure in any of the patients. Before digoxin administration total electromechanical systole (QS2), the pre-ejection period (PEP) and the PEP/LVET ratio were greater, while the left ventricular ejection time (LVET) was shorter than in the control group (P < 0.001). In patients with chronic renal failure digoxin administration induced a reduction in QS2, PEP and PEP/LVET ratio and a prolongation of LVET (P < 0.001). These data suggest latent heart failure in the group of patients studied with chronic renal failure. It seems to be advisable to use digitalis preparations in patients with chronic renal failure despite the absence of clinical signs of heart failure.

Chwastox D--herbicide for killing dicotyledonous weeds was evaluated toxicologically, basing on studies on the mass and morphological picture of internal organs of rats receiving, over 13 weeks, 15, 60, 240 and 960 mg/kg of feeding stuff containing this herbicide. The animals exposed for 13 weeks to different doses of Chwastox D were found to develop inspecific pathomorphotic changes, like disturbed circulation, retrogressive, progressive and inflammatory changes. The pathomorpohologic changes were found to be increased with 240 and 960 mg of stuff. The observations indicated that the maximum allowable dose for rats is 60 mg/kg of the feeding stuff.
In 18 patients with chronic renal failure the parathormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT) and 25-OH-D blood levels were estimated before and after an intravenous calcium load. In ten patients the above mentioned biochemical parametres were confronted with histological findings obtained in bone biopsy material. Significantly elevated levels of PTH and CT were found while those of 25-OH-D were normal. Serum PTH decreased after a calcium load. In contrast to healthy persons no increase of serum CT was stated. Significant positive correlations were found between PTH and CT levels in blood serum as well as between the mineralized bone volume and 25-OH-D levels in serum. In addition a significant negative correlation was stated between the osteoid volume and 25-OH-D levels in blood serum. From the results obtained it is concluded, that from estimations of PTH, CT and 25-OH-D in blood serum histological alterations in bone biopsy material from chronic uremic patients can not be predicted. Beside secondary hyperparathyreoidism, relative deficiency of CT and active vitamin D metabolites other factors are also involved in the pathogenesis of renal osteodystrophy.
