Determination of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in human brain tumors.

Brain tumors have been tested for their glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) content by means of the rocket electrophoresis technique. Meningiomas and neurinomas were low in GFAP. Metastases had a low level of GFAP except when contaminated with surrounding tissue. Non-nervous tumors such as myeloma, myeloplaxoma and adenocarcinoma gave negative results. More detailed correlations with histological observations have been looked for in glial tumors. Low levels of GFAP were always associated with signs of malignancy such as mitoses and giant or atypical cells, whereas high levels of GFAP were correlated with the presence of well-preserved astrocytes.

Variations of mitotic activity in the adenohypophysis of male rats during a 24-hour cycle.

The mitotic activity in the adenohypophysis of male rats during a 24 hours' cycle has been studied at the time of the spring equinox. The animals were killed by perfusion of fixative. The mitotic activity seems to be the combination of two elements: a relatively low and nearly constant activity with two peaks of high activity. The first one takes place at 6 o'clock (local time) with an index reaching 4.25; the second one occurs at 11 o'clock (local time) and its index is 2.09. The afternoon activity is weak with an average index of 0.56 between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m. The results are analyzed, discussed and compared with other results observed in different organs.

Infiltrating extradural spinal angiolipoma.

BACKGROUND: Angiolipomas are considered to be rare. They are benign mesenchymal tumors generally located in the subcutaneous tissue of trunk and limbs. METHODS: The authors report a thoracic epidural angiolipoma mimicking a vertebro-epidural metastasis. The patient suffered from medullary compression related to an extradural mass in T6. RESULTS: Pathological ex-, amination was obtained from tumoral samples. They consisted of mature adipose tissue with numerous sections of abnormal vascular channels. CONCLUSIONS: Reviewing literature particular attention is paid to some questions raised in connection with different kinds of vertebro-epidural tumors. The authors give importance to relationships between angiolipomas and angiomyolipomas using MRI as a tool in differential diagnosis. Pathogenesis is evokated especially regarding the role of corticotherapy, the case herein reported lying within this therapeutical context.

Intradural spinal lipoma of the conus medullaris without spinal dysraphism.

A 42-year-old man suffering from progressive left radicular sensory motor loss (L4 level) underwent neurosurgical repair. Neuroimaging (RMI) had led to the diagnosis of schwannoma of the filum terminale with lipomatous component. Histological examination visualized a true mature lipoma associated with numerous bundles of more or less dystrophic nerve fibers. This histological benign tumor raised the problem of the genesis of intradural lipomas of spinal cord.

[Human cysticercosis. Four cases (First part) (author's transl)].

Produced by the larval form of Taenia solium, human cysticercosis is especially redoutable because of its great affinity for the nervous system and the eyes. In France, the isolated cases, apparently autochtons, are very seldom; cysticercosis is discovered, more frequently, among immigrated people. After an historical recall, the authors describe the lesions and, among clinical manifestations, the epileptogenic, ventricular and diffuse cerebral forms.

[Human cysticercosis. Four cases. (second part) (author's transl)].

Beside the principal aspects of cysticercosis (see the first part of this article) there are others clinical forms : medullar, ocular, subcutaneous, often associated to cerebral cysticercosis, latent or not. The complemental investigations are numerous, their value is variable. The complemental investigations are numerous, their value is variable. It is often difficult to distinguish cysticercosis from cenurosis. Therapy remains deceitful. Very important and useful are the measures of prevention.

[Neurological follow-up of glioblastomas treated by chemotherapy. Therapeutical incidences (author's transl)].

The authors describe the essential neurological complications observed during the follow-up of glioblastomas treated by sequential chemotherapy. They were studied on the basis of clinical, isotopical, CT scanner and or anatomical data. The most frequent complications are: epilepsy, acute neurological deficiency and intracranial hypertension. The diagnostic significance of the complications are discussed. Usually, they expresse a tumour extension. However, the recurrence presents varied aspects. It can be infiltrating and extensed, multifocal, focal, cystic ou pseudocystic. In the majority of cases the morphological, topographical and evolutional characters can determine the therapeutical attitude.
