[Levels of tetra-, triiodothyronine and thyroid stimulating hormone in patients with rheumatoid arthritis].

The authors made in patients with confirmed or classical rheumatoid arthritis, using RIA, functional tests of the thyroid gland, i.e. tetra-, triiodothyronine and thyroid stimulating hormone. While deviations of tetraiodothyronine levels from normal very rare, a reduction of triiodothyronine was recorded in 50% and of TSH in 27.2%. Clinically manifest thyropathy, i.e. hyperthyroidism was found only in one female patient. The authors investigated changes in the values of the above tests in the course of rheumatoid arthritis and a dysbalance in the regulation of thyroid functions. The investigation comprises also a group of 18 subjects with rheumatoid arthritis where antibodies against the thyroid gland were assessed. The latter were elevated in two patients.

[The most frequent causes and mechanisms of athletic injuries during organized physical education].

Injuries in physical training activities can be prevented by analyzing the causes and mechanisms of the origin of trauma. An analysis of statistical reports on injuries occurring in organized physical training in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic showed that the injuries were primarily caused by another person, and, further, by the condition of the training ground. In case of women and children, this order was reversed. With regard to prevention, this finding should lead to purposeful education, exercising a positive influence on the participants of sports activities and, also, to the provision of adequate sports grounds and footwear. As regards the injury mechanisms, involuntary falls prevail. Even in this case, preventive measures can be taken by methods training the fall. The analysis is completed with a diagnostic evaluation and with the localization of injuries. Articular injuries, particularly those in the lower extremities, appear to be the most frequent diagnosis.

[Injuries in organized physical education 1976-1987 in Czechoslovakia].

A statistical analysis of 176,278 cases of trauma caused by the organized sports activities was made and evaluated. The highest number occurs in the adult group aged 20-29 years. The analysis is concerned with the severity of the injury judged by the duration of treatment. It also refers to the hazards of individual sports and games based on the relative rate of trauma. Sports activities with maximum risk include skibob riding, ice hockey, boxing and rugby football. The paper described the method employed for data collection and shows how to apply the results in trauma prevention in unorganized spontaneous sports activities pursued by mass population.

[Problems in admitting and eliminating children from sports training schools].

The physical and mental load of children enlisted in the system of preparation for top sports is great. It is therefore essential to ensure very careful health care and also very strict criteria for enlistment of children to avoid pathological adaptation to the sports load. Specialized sports training of 14-18 hours per week may, in case of incorrect compensating activity, be the basis for the development of secondary changes. In the selection it is important to adhere to criteria pertaining to health, performance, function and development and to evaluate them in relation to the character of the sports discipline and preparation for attaining top performance. Based on six years' experience, it is possible to indicate for the purpose of orientation the risks of different sports for the locomotor system during ontogenesis. Cooperation of orthopaedists and specialists in sports medicine is the prerequisite of restricting possible negative sequelae of local and general overburdening. The conclusion must be always the synthesis of all examinations and conclusions must not be drawn from a single examination. The authors draw attention to mistakes in the evaluation by specialists as a result of lacking knowledge as regards the loading of the organism by training in these schools.

[Injuries in children and adolescents during organized physical education (Czechoslovakia 1976-1987)].

Based on an analysis of 11,307 injuries of children and 29,537 injuries of adolescents, the authors draw attention to the causes and mechanisms of sports injuries. They occurred in the course of 10 years during organized activities in physical training organizations. The greatest proportion of injuries in children occur in gymnastics, figure skating and modern gymnastics. In adolescents there are most injuries during boxing, and during bobsleigh and sledge contents. When assessing the same as in other age groups--an unwanted fall surface of the gymnasium floor or the fault of another person. In adolescents the order is reversed and is similar as in adults. The mechanism of child injuries is the same as in other age groups--an unwanted fall predominates. Children differ markedly from others in the diagnoses: fractures are most frequent, while distortions are much rarer. The method of data collection markedly influences the structure of diagnoses, because the group comprises a minimum of injuries with a short period of therapy which are not paid for by insurance companies.

[Spinal deviations in sports medicine practice].

The examination of the spine in sportsmen is imperative. The anatomical configuration reveals the X-ray examination, where the radiation is, however, considerable. Our apparatus eliminates the danger of radiation, using a non-invasive method of examination, at the same time enabling to state the grade of curvature both in the frontal and the sagittal level. It also secures the standard posture at examination. The authors have also found the conclusive physiological deviation of the single curvatures of the spine, and examined various groups of sportsmen in which the grade of pathological curvature was evaluated.
