Sultamicillin (SBTPC) is a combination drug of sulbactam (SBT) and ampicillin (ABPC) in an ester bonding at 1:1 ratio. SBT, a new semisynthetic beta-lactamase inhibitor restores and extends the spectrum of ABPC against resistant strains of bacteria. SBTPC granules were administered to 26 pediatric patients with infections, and clinical efficacies were studied in 23 patients. The clinical efficacy rate was 95.7% and the drug was evaluated to be highly effective for the treatment of infectious diseases in the pediatric field. SBTPC was safe and well tolerated.

Eleven cases of Hodgkin's disease were studied using ten monoclonal antibodies. Our findings indicated that Reed-Sternberg cells and Hodgkin's cells were distinctly stained for HLA-DR and LN-2 in all the cases, for Leu-3a in six cases, and for Leu-M1 in eight cases. They were not stained for Leu-1, Leu-2a, Leu-4, OKT3, OKT6, or LN-1 in any of the cases. Although these results remain insufficient to find any conclusions concerning the nature of Reed-Sternberg cells and Hodgkin's cells, Leu-3a reactivity may represent the aberrant form of T-cell phenotype. Alternatively, we suggest that Reed-Sternberg cells and Hodgkin's cells may be derived from monocyte-macrophage lineage because normal and neoplastic cells of monocyte/macrophage lineage express Pan-T antigen-/HLA-DR+/Leu-3a+/OKT6- phenotype.
Eight cases of primary malignant lymphoma of the brain were examined clinically and immunohistopathologically. According to the LSG classification the patients were subclassified into 5 with diffuse large cell type, 2 with diffuse medium-sized cell type and one with diffuse mixed cell type. Immunohistological stainings demonstrated that all of them were of B lymphocyte origin. Two cases had multiple lesions which were seen in the periventricular area. Tumor response for the treatment consisted of surgery followed by radiation therapy was excellent except for one. Only 2 patients were alive and well at 24 months and 27 months.
A 72-year-old male was admitted because of right lower quadrant pain, Barium enema and total colonoscopy disclosed multiple colon cancers and sequentially, a subtotal colectomy was performed. The resected specimen demonstrated 3 advanced carcinomas and an adenomatous cancer with additional multiple polyps. Investigation of his family history revealed that his mother and his elder sister had died of uterine cancer, and that his elder brother, his nephew, and his niece had been operated on for colorectal cancer. We thus supposed a case of "Cancer Family Syndrome" presenting multiple neoplasms of the colon.

Studies were made on the binding mode of the nucleosome-assembly protein AP-I with histones H2A + H2B and/or H3 + H4. Histones H2A + H2B bound with AP-I to form a 7-S complex which contained twice as much AP-I (by weight) as histones. Histone H3 + H4 formed an 8-S complex with AP-I. The 7-S and 8-S complexes did not form a new complex when mixed, but significant amounts of two histone pairs were assembled into a 12-S complex on mixing the (H2A + H2B)--AP-I complex (7-S) with free H3 + H4. In contrast, when the (H3 + H4)--AP-I complex (8-S) was incubated with free H2A + H2B, almost no assembly occurred, but the 7-S complex of H2A + H2B was newly formed. Binding studies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that AP-I bound with H2A + H2B faster than with H3 + H4. From these results, it is suggested that AP-I has a higher binding affinity for histone H2A + H2B than for H3 + H4, and that the 7-S complex is an intermediate in formation of the 12-S octamer complex (H2A + H2B + H3 + H4)2.
The size of the prostate was measured in 11 patients with the prostatic cancer by means of transrectal ultrasonotomography after LHRH analog ([Ser(Bu)6] LHRH) treatment. Prostate volume changed parallel to serum testosterone (T) level and decreased by 17-62% compared with baseline after LHRH analog treatment for 4 months. Two different patterns were observed for the change in prostatic volume. Type A expanded transiently and then decreased gradually, while type B decreased continuously from the beginning with no expansion. After treatment for 4 months, the prostatic volume of type A was significantly less than that of type B. It is suggested that prostatic cancer showing a type A regression curve may be more sensitive to T, resulting in a better prognosis than type B.
Human skin fibroblasts from embryo, 16-, 30- and 60-year-old adults were cultivated and passaged in vitro. Their chromatin structures were examined by the sensitivity to micrococcal nuclease and by electron microscopy. When the mode of DNA degradation by the nuclease was analysed during in vitro aging of the embryo skin fibroblasts, the discrete ladder of nucleosomal DNA became obscure in old cells. Analogous change of chromatin structure was also observed even in young cells as their donor ages increased. From the observation with electron microscopy, it became clear that chromatin of fibroblasts from 30-year-old adults does not have regularly spaced nucleosomes, compared with chromatin from embryo. These results suggest that the length of the linker DNA which connects core particles becomes to be heterogeneous by aging, both in vivo and in vitro in human skin fibroblasts.
[11C]Cyanoimipramine has been prepared by methylation of the desmethyl cyanoimipramine with [11C]methyl iodide. The chemically and radiochemically pure labelled product was obtained with a high specific activity (greater than 300 mCi/mumol). When 11C (or 3H)-cyanoimipramine was intravenously administered in mice, high accumulations were shown in brain and lung. Thirty minutes after injection of the tracer, differences were found in the radioactivity between the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum. The regional distribution of radioactivity in the rat brain 30 min after i.v. injection of [11C]cyanoimipramine was also examined, and the radioactivity was high in receptor rich areas (striatum, cerebral cortex etc.) but low in receptor poor area (cerebellum). The in vivo stability of [3H]cyanoimipramine was quite stable in the mouse brain for at least 30 min. Thirty minutes after injection, the radioactivity in the cerebral cortex of the carrier-added state was reduced as compared with the carrier-free state. Taken together, the in vivo specific binding of [3H]cyanoimipramine in the cerebral cortex was estimated at about 40-50% of the total radioactivity. Furthermore, the distribution of [3H]cyanoimipramine in the mice forced to swim was examined. Significant changes in the distribution of [3H]cyanoimipramine were observed in the cerebral cortex.
In order to re-examine the cellular structure of isolated FDC-culsters in the germinal centers of human tonsils, a light microscopical analysis was made. Approximately 14 FDC-clusters were recovered from one enucleated germinal center using the enzyme digestion technique. The minimum unit of the FDC-clusters was composed of one FDC and 8 to 9 lymphocytes. Most of the FDC-clusters were representative of the microenvironment of the light zone at the germinal center in situ. Half of the engulfed centrocytes were supposed to be at the Go phase, and the others at the G1 to G2 phase. It is suspected that the helper-T cell has some relationship to the FDC microenvironment, and that the suppressor-T cell does not. Most of the CIgG-containing cells in the germinal centers were considered to have infiltrated into the interspace of the FDC microenvironment.
An epidemiological survey of cataract was performed in a limited local population. 1,020 individuals over 40 years of age were examined. The crystalline lens findings were documented by both Scheimpflug and retroillumination photography. Cataractous changes were classified into three groups according to early senile changes, incipient cataractous changes and only prominent cataractous changes. Forms of opacification were classified as cortical, subcapsular, nuclear, mixed type and others. The percent prevalence of cataracts including early senile changes was 33.9% in the 40-year-old population, 62.8% in the 50, 76.2% in the 60, 84.0% in the 70 and 100% for those in their 80s. Prominent cataractous opacification was 1.6% in the 40-year-old population, 3.1% for those in their 50s, 19.0% in their 60s, 28.6% in their 70s and 57.1% in their 80s, respectively. Until age 60, the type of opacification was mainly cortical alone; however, after age 70, cortical opacity accompanied by nuclear and/or capsular opacities increased. The pure nuclear type increased in individuals over 70.
