[Drug sensitivity test of cultured human cancer cells--assay for microcolonies inhibition test].

The sensitivity of anti-cancer drugs against cultured human lung cancer cells and the first cultured xenograft tumor has been measured by the microcolonies inhibition test in microplates (Falcon, Micro Test II). The results obtained were as follows; 1). The drug sensitivity of cancer cells has differed in each case. The established cancer cell lines of the same cell type and the same growth speed have also showed a different sensitivity. Therefore, it suggests that the measurement of drug sensitivity of cultured human cancer cells is usefull for the clinical application. 2). The drug sensitivity of cancer cells has been elevated when they changed their character during the passage cultures. On the other hand, the successful culture of cancer cells has been elevated when they were purified with discontinuous density gradients and a hypotonization. 3). In future, further efforts to develop a better medium for the colonies inhibition test, i. e., a conditioned medium containing the specific growth factor for the colony of cancer cells are imperative.

Acute decompression sickness--report of an autopsy case with widespread fat embolism.

A case of acute decompression sickness presenting severe clinical features was reported. At the time of autopsy, intra- and extravascular air bubbles were found in various organs. Pulmonary fat embolism was also prominent in association with severe circulatory disturbances of the lungs. The spinal cord showed edematous and congestive swelling which was intimately related to the coagulation of blood within the epidural veins that contained innumerable fat droplets. Intravascular fat seemed to be created in and released from the injured adipose tissue, especially that of the bone marrow during decompression and to have acted as an accelerator of intravascular coagulation. The pathophysiological significance of the fat embolism for the development and the progression of decompression sickness is discussed.

Gastroduodenal disease in chronic spinal cord injuries. An endoscopic study.

Endoscopic study of the upper gastrointestinal tract was performed in 40 patients in the chronic stage of spinal cord injury. Of these, 37 patients were analyzed for endoscopic abnormalities, symptoms, and physical findings. Nineteen patients (51.4%) had abnormalities by endoscopy. There were 11 gastric erosions, two gastric ulcers, and six cases of congestion or submucosal hemorrhage. In addition, five patients had duodenal mucosal lesions. An attempt to find clear diagnostic clues in terms of symptoms or physical signs was unsuccessful. Anorexia and nausea were early symptoms to which we should pay attention. The results do not permit an assessment of the relation of various possible causative factors and these gastroduodenal lesions. The study does call attention to the high incidence of gastroduodenal lesions in these patients.

Taking the role of retarded children: effects of familiarity and similarity.

As a first step in improving social relations between nonhandicapped and retarded children, this study was designed to investigate children's ability to take a retarded child's role and the effects of two variables on this ability: (a) familiarity with the characteristics of retarded children and (b) similarity of experiences to those of retarded youngsters. Findings were interpreted as indicating that children's ability to take the perspective of retarded children may be a productive area for further research.

Proliferative fasciitis. A variant of nodular fasciitis.

The clinical and pathologic features of eight cases of proliferative fasciitis, a variant of nodular fasciitis, were described. The lesion affected adults older than 51 years of age. It involved various parts of the body and grew rapidly in most cases. Follow-up information, however, revealed that the patients took a benign clinical course after a local excision. Microscopically a diffuse proliferation of fibroblastic cells intermingled with a number of large basophilic cells resembling ganglion cells was characteristic, and was accompanied by slight lymphocytic infiltration and by slight fibrinous exudation and hemorrhage. The large basophilic cells seemed to be metamorphosed from cells of fibroblastic series.

The first seven cases of chronic beryllium disease in ceramic factory workers in Japan.

In the present paper the first 7 cases in Japan of chronic beryllium disease found in workers employed in a ceramic factory utilizing beryllium have been described. Immunological examinations of these cases showed changes similar to those observed in sarcoidosis, that is, negative tuberculin test and increase in serum gamma globulin and immunoglobulins. The fact that a considerable number of workers in the same factories as the patients showed negative tuberculin reaction may suggest that there may be further cases of chronic beryllium disease among them that are still in a latent period.
