Autopsy findings of 12 patients with yusho including 2 stillborn babies are reported. Characteristic pathological changes were acne-like eruptions and cutaneous pigmentation with histological features of follicular hyperkeratosis, dilated hair follicles, and an increase of melanin pigment of the epidermis. In addition to the skin lesions, multiplication of the duct epithelium of the esophageal gland was found in 6 patients. Unusual multiple small foci of myocardial necrosis and fibrosis with basophilic myofibrillar degeneration were found in one patient, suggesting a relation to PCB exposure. Five cases with carcinomas (two involving the liver, two the lung, and one the esophagus) were also found, but their causal relationship with PCB was not certain. Nine cases showed the characteristic gas chromatographic pattern of yusho, but two cases had the same one as that of healthy controls.

The importance of DIC in the management of gynecological malignancy, especially in advanced cases, was stressed on the basis of our experience with 8 cases. The overall incidence of DIC in our series of 366 cases of gynecological malignancies was 2.2%. However, DIC was experienced only in cases of advanced later stages and the recurrence of malignancy, and the incidence of DIC in these two groups were 2.2% and 7.2% respectively. In our 8 cases, DIC seemed to be provoked or worsened by antitumoric chemotherapy, major surgery, radiation therapy, infection, cerebral infarction and massive packed red cell transfusion. At the same time, an exceptional case of fulminating DIC which had probably been provoked by packed red cell transfusion in a patient with advanced but not detected endometrial cancer which developed in a endometriotic uterus was presented.

Cell cultures were carried out from four patients with infantile digital fibromatosis. The cultured cells, which contained cytoplasmic inclusions identical to those of the original tumor cells, possessed cortical bundles of microfilaments, rich network of granular endoplasmic reticulum, and well-developed Golgi complex. To demonstrate the distribution of actin filaments in the cultured cells, the heavy meromyosin-binding method was applied to saponin-treated cells from one of the four patients. The microfilaments constituting the inclusions as well as the cortical bundles were decorated with heavy meromyosin, presenting the "arrowhead complexes" specific for actin filaments. The inclusion may represent abnormal contraction of actin filaments in the cytoplasm of myofibroblasts.
A 809 bp Sau 3A - Hpa I fragment containing a complete HBsAg gene and fragments 744 bp Hinc II - Hpa I and 712 bp Xba I - Hpa I containing a truncated HBsAg gene lacking the sequence encoding the NH2-terminal hydrophobic domain were prepared from a composite plasmid pHBV933 containing the 3.2 kb Eco RI DNA fragment of the entire HBV/adw genome and inserted into an expression vector pTRP801 to give plasmids pTRP SS-6, pTRP SS-39, and pTRP SS-50, respectively. The growth of a recombinant having pTRP SS-6 was greatly inhibited and the transformant expressed a low level of HBsAg, which is reactive to human anti-HBsAg antibody. Interestingly, the growth of transformants harbouring pTRP SS-39 and pTRP SS-50 was not inhibited and these transformants expressed a considerable level of the HBsAg. Minicells harbouring pTRP SS-6, pTRP SS-39, and pTRP SS-50 formed specific polypeptides of about 24 K, 23 K, and 22 K daltons, respectively.
Using the cDNA of human epsilon chain, three expression plasmids that code directly the constant portion of the epsilon chain (C epsilon 1-C epsilon 4, C epsilon 2-C epsilon 4 and C epsilon 3-C epsilon 4 domains) were constructed. These epsilon chain peptides were synthesized in E. coli under the control of the trp promoter-operator. The bacterially produced peptides have the antigenicity of human epsilon chain and gave the molecular weights equal to the values calculated from the amino acid sequence of the constructed plasmids.
Twenty cases of solid carcinoma of the stomach (SCS) were studied light and electron microscopically and histochemically. On the histologic, histochemical, and ultrastructural bases they were divided into three subgroups: mucin-secreting carcinomas (MSC) (12 cases); neuroendocrine tumors (NET) (five cases); and composite tumors (CT) (three cases). Histochemically, mucin was detectable at high intensity in most cases of MSC and ultrastructurally, the mucin granules, the number of which varied considerably from cell to cell, showed prominent pleomorphism with varying degree of maturity. Uniformly round neuroendocrine granules were demonstrable in all of the NET cases and in two cases of CT. The argyrophilic stain was negative in two cases of NET, whereas it was positive in three cases of MSC. Thus, there was a discrepancy between the silver nitrate reduction intensity and the ultrastructural demonstrability of neuroendocrine granules. Histologically, combined occurrence of some nuclear palisading of basal cells and rosette-like arrangement without evident glandular formation was specific to NET and this provides a helpful basis for the light microscopic differentiation of this tumor from other type tumors.
