[The effectiveness of radiation therapy in bone metastasis from breast cancer].

48 cases with bone metastasis from breast cancer were treated by radiation therapy. Result; 1) The effective ratio of radiation therapy on symptomatic relief of pain was 83%. 2) In 90% of effective cases, patients felt pain relief at 20 Gy. 3) For 3 of 7 cases which showed paralysis by vertebral metastasis, radiotherapy was very effective. 4) The patients with only bone metastasis have good prognosis. So, it is important radiotherapy is performed on different outlook.

[Three cases of thyroid cancer, including a component of squamous cell carcinoma].

A squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid gland is rare and its prognosis is poor. Three cases of a rare thyroid cancer are reported, the first case being an adenosquamous cell carcinoma of a 75-year-old male and the second case being a pure squamous cell carcinoma of a 64-year-old male. These two cases were pathologically diagnosed on autopsy. The overall duration of these two cases was 6 months. The third case involved a 62-year-old male. His pathological diagnosis was a mixed squamous cell carcinoma and an undifferentiated carcinoma. Postoperatively 50 Gy of irradiation was performed. This patient is still alive and has shown no evidence of recurrence for 16 months.

Isolation of the chick myosin alkali light chain gene expressed in embryonic gizzard muscle and transitional expression of the light chain gene family in vivo.

A chick embryonic myosin alkali light chain L23 gene that is expressed transiently at embryonic stages in chick skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscles and in brain continuously from embryo to adult stages, was isolated and characterized. Sequence analysis showed that the exonic sequence of this gene was identical with that of embryonic myosin light chain mRNA except for one base replacement. This gene is a single gene of 5200 bases, which is divided into seven exons by six introns, and the positions of inserts of all the introns are well-conserved as in the skeletal and cardiac muscle myosin alkali light chain genes. Therefore, this embryonic myosin light chain gene can be classified as a member of the myosin alkali light chain gene family, and these three genes may have originated from a common ancestral gene. Transcription of the embryonic light chain gene starts from the same initiation site 33 bases upstream from ATG in embryonic muscle tissues and brain. Comparison of the nucleotide sequence around the promotor region of the embryonic myosin light chain gene with the corresponding regions of the skeletal and cardiac myosin light chain genes showed that the 11-base consensus sequence (TCCTATTTATAG) is present about 100 bases upstream from the transcription initiation site in each gene.

[Clinical evaluation of biological response modifiers (BRMs) combined with radiotherapy].

The present status of clinical application and future prospect of immunotherapy using BRMs, especially PS-K, for cancer patients treated by irradiation were described here. Prolonged survivals were revealed in the radiation therapy of patients with carcinoma of lung and uterine cervix concomitant use of PS-K. And the condition necessary for long-term survival with BRMs were thought to be that the tumor was almost disappeared by irradiation. But, there is not an evaluation criteria for BRMs without any direct effects on tumor. Then judgment of clinical usefulness of immunopotentiators are difficult and needs to make new evaluation criteria.
