Recently reports of the cases with intracranial germ cell tumor associated with dissemination to the central nervous system are increased since the introduction of CT scan. The authors experienced 8 cases with the dissemination among 19 cases of intracranial germ cell tumor in childhood, and discussed their clinico-pathological features. Before the CT scan era, the authors experienced only one case with dissemination, who was a 11 years-old boy (Case 1) and revealed two cell pattern pinealoma disseminating on the subependymal layer of all ventricles and in the basal cisterns at autopsy. Since the introduction of CT scan, 4 cases were found, who showed periventricular dissemination already at the first admission. Among them three cases revealed tumors in the pineal or suprasellar region and also dissemination of tumors on the wall of the lateral ventricles. The other one (Case 3) did not reveal any tumor at pineal or suprasellar region, but disseminated tumors on the wall of the third and lateral ventricles. Histological appearances of all 4 cases were two cell pattern pinealoma by examination of surgical or CSF materials. Only one case (Case 5) was found spinal dissemination later. All 4 cases were good prognosis. The authors considered that there might be diffuse primary ependymal germ cell tumor besides diffuse metastatic one. In the CT scan era, there were three cases who showed dissemination or metastasis along their clinical courses, but had not showed at the first administration. One (Case 6) of 3 cases showed a tumor at the right thalamus at the first administration. Five years later, the tumor metastasized to the cervical cord and he died.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
The purpose of this paper is to present the possible usefulness of macrotomography with three-fold magnification as demonstrated by a new apparatus. It can perform both conventional tomography and macrotomography of the same object plane. Quantitative evaluation included measurements of resolution, modulation transfer function and radiation dose. Qualitative evaluation included an analysis of clinical cases in which both techniques were used. The superior image quality of macrotomography with three-fold magnification was demonstrated and the clinical areas in which it proved most helpful are defined.

Ten cases of human oligodendroglioma were examined with electron microscope. The materials were specimens derived through surgical operations. Results were as follow. The shape of tumor cells are various, round, oval, polygonal and irregular. The majority of tumor cells have round or ovoid nuclei, some have irregular nuclei or nuclear indentation. Chromatin distributions tend to clump. In the cytoplasm, there are commonly ribosomes, rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulums, mitochondria, microtubules and lysosome. Glial filament is rare or almost absent. Crystalline structures are seen in 3 cases. Cellular junctions, though immature, are seen in 4 cases. Perinuclear halo in the light microscopy was explained to be a fixation artifact in 10% formol. The samples, which were fixed in 2.5% cold glutaraldehyde and post-fixed in 1% osmium tetraoxide, did not show perinclear halo under the light and electron microscope. The specimen, which were fixed in 10% formol, were examined with electron microscope. Plasma membrane of the tumor cell was partly destroyed, intracytoplasmic organelles and matrix were also broken, and the cytoplasm was empty. It is confirmed in this study that empty cytoplasm represents the peculiar perinuclear halo in the light microscopy.

In August, 1979, one female and three male wild volcano rabbits (Romerolagus diazi) were obtained and attempts have been made to rear and breed them in the laboratory. Mating was attempted from the 3rd month after the volcano rabbits were obtained and the first birth (two offspring) occurred after about one year. Thereafter, the same female gave birth three times and a total of 10 offspring have been obtained. Four females and three males could be weaned. The period of gestation was estimated as 34-48 days. The body weights at birth were 25-27 g for females and 32 g for males, and after three weeks, the weights had increased to 80-130 g for females and 95-128 g for males. Weaning was possible at 3 weeks of age. Volcano rabbits are small with an adult body weight of 400-600 g and they are also gentle animals. They should prove valuable if they can be established as laboratory animals in the future.
Lately there is a tendency for an increase in the incidence of endometrial cancer both in this country and other industrialized countries such as the United States. The routine cervicovaginal smear method is generally poor for the detection of endometrial carcinoma as compared to that used for the diagnosis of early cervical neoplasms. The principal reason for the poor detection rate is that the cells are not obtained directly from the lesion as is the case with disease of the cervix. Various techniques for obtaining endometrial cells directly from the lesions have been described, but none has enjoyed wide acceptance by the clinicians. The patients for this study consisted of 138 women who were referred to us for diagnostic curettage. We employed the new disposable device, the Endocyte, and Masubuchi's endometrial aspiration and compared the results. After obtaining specimens with both methods curettage was performed on all patients. In addition, the Endocyte was employed on 8 patients with endometrial carcinoma in another hospital, and the following results were obtained. 1. With the Endocyte it is possible to obtain a larger volume of cells than by aspiration. 2. Although a certain amount of difficulty is encountered in the insertion of the Endocyte in some cases, it is much easier than the brush method used heretofore. 3. No significant difference in the amount of bleeding after insertion could be observed between the two methods. 4. In patients with bleeding in the endometrium and pyometra it is easier to obtain specimens from the endometrium with the Endocyte than by aspiration. 5. With the Endocyte contamination of the cells of the cervix was less than after aspiration. 6. Although pain during collection of cells with the Endocyte was somewhat stronger than during aspiration, analgesics were not necessary in any one of the cases. 7. The Endocyte was used on 13 patients with endometrial carcinoma, and all specimens were positive for carcinoma. From the results of our study we conclude that for endometrial cytology the Endocyte is as useful as the aspiration method. Furthermore, it should pose no difficulty to the gynecologists to use the Endocyte because the Endocyte resembles IUD structurally.

Frogs and toads, as paratenic hosts, are known to be sources of human angiostrongyliasis. The present investigation was carried out to examine the role of the tadpole as an experimental intermediate host. First-, second-, and third-stage larvae were found in tadpoles of Xenopus laevis from the 1st, 14th, and 18th days, respectively, after exposure to the first-stage larva of Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Third-stage larvae collected from a frog which had metamorphosed from an exposed tadpole reached maturity and oviposited in an albino rat. This is the first demonstration that a vertebrate, the tadpole of X. laevis, can serve as an experimental intermediate host of A. cantonensis.
