By the method of precipitation with Rivanol (2-ethoxy-6,9-diaminoacridine lactate) and ammonium sulphate followed by chromatography on DEAE cellulose three genetic variants of transferrin were purified from equine serum: D, M and R. Their molecular mass determined in this study was 80 000, and it was identical for all three variants, which differed slightly in their amino acid composition. The protein level was determined in the serum of 535 two-year-old thoroughbred English horses by the method of rocket immunoelectrophoresis using antibodies obtained against three transferrins. The individual variability of the protein level in horses of the same phenotype was fairly high (variability index 9-15%). No differences were observed in the transferrin level related to sex. It was found that the presence of D, F and H alleles was connected with a higher serum transferrin level, while O and R alleles were connected with a lower level.
A psychosociological survey was carried out at the "Maternité Baudelocque", in Paris; 645 women were interviewed during their stay at the hospital after delivery, according to a semi-structured questionnaire. The main purpose of this survey was to study the factors able to improve the quality of prenatal care and women behaviour during pregnancy. The interview was composed of questions on the kind of medical care received during pregnancy, the participation in training for childbirth program, the changes in daily life (rest, nutrition, smoking) and the search for extra-information about pregnancy. On the whole, the interviewed mothers received intensive prenatal care. However, some individual features influenced the quality of this medical care, especially the active role of the women themselves. The data pointed out not only the impact of the involvement in training for childbirth, but also the influence of a personal search for information, which promotes the understanding and acceptance of the medical team requirements.
Immunochemical and enzymatic analyses of horse serum carboxylesterase were carried out with respect to the existence of a silent gene. Sera with positive phenotypic expression of esterase, both heterozygotes and presumed homozygotes, were compared with:--sera with positive phenotypic expression but genotypically +/O;--sera with a negative phenotypic expression, i. e. genotypically O/O;--sera of natural +/O "hemi-zygotes": mules (donkey lacking the esterase);--positive sera heated at 60 degrees C;--positive sera after specific inhibition of enzymatic activity. Titration by immunocompetition has shown that sera phenotypically negative do not contain an immunologically active "dummy" protein; however, using a sensitive immunotitration (rocket immunoelectrophoresis), traces of active protein could be demonstrated. Sera of +/O genotypes, both horses and mules, contain approximatively half of esterase present in +/+ sera. Heating at 60 degrees destroys the antigenic properties of the esterase almost completely, while, on the contrary, a specific inhibition of enzymatic activity leaves the antigenic properties unaffected.
The 1983 OSHA Hazard Communication Standard requires training of employees exposed to hazardous chemicals. The authors provide a detailed look at the successes and failures of a joint labor-management training program that was designed to bring a firm with more than 50 manufacturing facilities into compliance with the standard.
A prospective survey of more than 9,000 pregnant women showed that those who consumed more than 0.4 l of wine or equivalent in other alcoholic beverages per day during pregnancy had a higher risk of unfavourable outcome. The risk of stillbirth was higher, particularly that due to abruptio placentae. The average birthweight was lower and the risk of giving birth to a small-for-date infant was higher. Furthermore the men placental weight was lower. Women with moderate or high alcohol consumption also differed from those with low alcohol consumption in some classical risk factors for the outcome of pregnancy, but the increased risk with consumption of alcohol remained significant when these other factors were taken into account. The increased risk among women with moderate or high alcohol consumption appeared to be limited to beer drinkers, although the mean quantity of alcohol consumed by beer drinkers was smaller than that consumed by wine drinkers.
