In a randomized trial, three alternative schemes of treatment of preterm labour with ritodrine (long infusion, short infusion, and intramuscular injection) were compared with standard treatment by bed rest and sedatives. None of the ritodrine treatments were found to be better in postponing delivery than the standard treatment. However, the Bishop scores of the patients in the standard treatment group tended to be lower than of the patients treated with ritodrine. Moreover, all cases of congenital malformation and polyhydramnios occurred in the patients treated with ritodrine. The incidence of respiratory insufficiency was significantly higher in infants of mothers treated with ritodrine. The mean birth weight was highest in the standard treatment group.
To study the effect on thyroid function 100 mg of clomifene citrate was given once a day to two groups of healthy male volunteers for 5 and 12 consecutive days, respectively. In both groups serum concentrations of TSH, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, T3 resin uptake test and thyroid hormone binding proteins were measured before, during and after oral administration of clomifene. The effect of clomifene treatment was evaluated in Group 1 by means of serum FSH and LH measurements. Further in Group 2 the serum TSH response to iv TRH (200 microgram) was also investigated. The mean per cent elevations in serum concentrations of FSH and LH were 145 and 200, respectively. In Group 1 a small but statistically significant decrease within reference limits in triiodothyronine (P less than 0.01) and free thyroxine index (P less than 0.02) was found on day 4 of clomifene. On day 5 a slight increase in TSH was observed (P less than 0.05). In Group 2 the response of TSH to TRH showed a non-significant increase after 5 days and a significant increase (P less than 0.01) after 12 days of clomifene. Eight days after discontinuation of the drug the response was restored to normal. No changes in the thyroid hormone binding proteins in serum could be demonstrated. Though the observed changes were slight, they indicate that clomifene exerts an influence directly on the thyroid function.

The hypothesis that gonadoblastoma (gonocytoma III) arises from gonadal tissue with a male chromosome complement has earlier been forwarded. In the literature there is no case with a well documented diagnosis of gonadoblastoma and absence of a Y chromosome. In the two presented cases, one a phenotypic female, the other a phenotypic male, gonadoblastoma was diagnosed. Cytogenetic studies of the removed gonadoblastomas revealed a Y chromosome in both cases. This is in accordance with the hypothesis.
From 1959-1973 128 patients with tumors of the eyelids were treated at the "Augenklinik im Krankenhaus Nordstadt Hannover"; in 103 cases the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma was histologically proved. With 62.1% of male patients prevailed the female patients with 37.9%. The age of the patients, localisation of the tumors, previous treatment and duration of involvement are discussed in detail. With the exception of 3 cases, which had a primary or secondary radiation they were surgically treated. A short explanation of the technics is given. In 82 out of 101 surgically treated cases (81%) the patients were clinically healed by a single operative treatment. During our observation there was no recurrence. Together with the number of patients, who were treated for several time, the over-all-cure-rate was 98.2%. Complications of surgical treatment are described and compared with those of other types of therapy. According to our results and as mentioned in the literature basal cell carcinomas of the peri-orbital region should be treated only by ophthalmologists. Lifelong control is necessary because of the extraordinary character of the tumor, which shows many exceptions in regard to basal cell carcinomas on other parts of the body.

In this study, the authors describe a method for evaluation of material emissions. The study was based on chemical analysis of emissions from 23 materials representing solid wood and wood-based materials commonly used in furniture, interior furnishings, and building products in Denmark in the 1990s. The authors used the emission chamber testing method to examine the selected materials with a qualitative screening and quantitative determination of volatile organic compounds. The authors evaluated the toxicological effects of all substances identified with chamber testing. Lowest concentration of interest and standard room concentrations were assessed, and the authors calculated an S-value for each wood and wood-based material. The authors identified 144 different chemical substances with the screening analyses, and a total of 84 individual substances were quantified with chamber measurements. The irritative effects dominated at low exposure levels; therefore, the lowest concentration of interest and the S-value were based predominantly on these effects. The S-values were very low for solid ash, oak, and beech. For solid spruce and pine, the determining substances for size of the S-value were delta3-carene, alpha-pinene, and limonene. For the surface-treated wood materials, the S-value reflected the emitted substances from the surface treatment.
The cytologic histories of 376 women presenting with invasive carcinoma of the cervix were analyzed. In total, 202 (53.7%) of these women had had 355 smears taken during the three years preceding presentation. All 320 smears with an original cytologic diagnosis of less than cancer were reviewed. The original cytologic diagnosis was low in 95 (30.6%) of 310 adequate smears. Originally, 96 (30.9%) of the adequate smears were evaluated as negative; at review, only 55 (17.5%) of the adequate smears were evaluated as negative. Comparing the review diagnoses to the 355 total smears, the rates of negative smears were 13.5% (42 of 310) for squamous-cell carcinoma, 30.0% (12 of 40) for adenocarcinoma and 20.0% (1 of 5) for adenosquamous carcinoma (P less than .05). The cellular composition of the smear was significantly related to the cytologic detection of abnormalities: endocervical cylindrical and/or metaplastic cells were seen in only 45.5% of smears diagnosed as negative, but in 84.4% and 97.8% of smears diagnosed as atypia and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, respectively P less than .00001). Smears without endocervical cells should be considered inadequate and should be repeated.
