An experimental and numerical study of the thermal oxidation of chlorobenzene.

A combustion-driven flow reactor was used to examine the formation of chlorinated and non-chlorinated species from the thermal oxidation of chlorobenzene under post-flame conditions. Temperature varied from 725 to 1000 K, while the equivalence ratio was held constant at 0.5. Significant quantities of chlorinated intermediates, vinyl chloride and chlorophenol, were measured. A dominant C-Cl scission destruction pathway seen in pyrolytic studies was not observed. Instead, hydrogen-abstraction reactions prevailed, leading to high concentrations of chlorinated byproducts. The thermal oxidation of benzene was also investigated for comparison. Chemical kinetic modeling of benzene and chlorobenzene was used to explore reaction pathways. Two chlorobenzene models were developed to test the hypothesis that chlorobenzene oxidation follows a CO-expulsion breakdown pathway similar to that of benzene. For the temperatures and equivalence ratio studied, hydrogen abstraction by hydroxyl radicals dominates the initial destruction of both benzene and chlorobenzene. Chlorinated byproducts (i.e., chlorophenol and vinyl chloride) were formed from chlorobenzene oxidation in similar quantities and at similar temperatures to their respective analogue formed during benzene oxidation (i.e., phenol and ethylene).

Long-term antimicrobial prophylaxis for recurrent urinary tract infection in women.

Thirteen women and two preadolescent girls who suffered recurrences after six months of prophylaxis with trimethoprim (TMP; 40 mg) and sulfamethoxazole (SMZ; 200 mg) taken thrice weekly at bedtime were enrolled in a 24-month study of prophylaxis with the same region. During 29.1 cumulative patient-years of prophylaxis, two infections due to Escherichia coli and one each due to Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus faecalis occurred (0.14 infection/patient-year). MICs for these isolates were less than or equal to 2 micrograms of TMP/ml and greater than 512 micrograms of SMZ/ml. During prophylaxis, 106 of 116 cultures from the periurethral area and 66 of 97 cultures from the anal and canal yielded no aerobic gram-negative bacilli. In three patients, the periurethral area was colonized with aerobic gram-negative bacilli with MICs of greater than or equal to 2 micrograms of TMP/ml. Thirteen patients were followed after the discontinuation of prophylaxis. Eight suffered recurrences, seven with organisms susceptible to TMP. After one year the remaining five had experienced no recurrences. It is concluded that long-term prophylaxis with 40 mg of TMP and 200 mg of SMZ thrice weekly is an effective, well-tolerated regimen that can maintain an infection-free state in women with histories of frequent urinary reinfections.

Intermuscular lipomas of the thigh region in dogs: 11 cases.

Ten dogs with intermuscular lipomas in the thigh region were treated by surgical resection. The masses were located predominantly between the semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles and involved the full length of the femur. These lipomas were not infiltrative but located deep between the fascial planes of the associated muscles. These tumors can appear similar to soft-tissue sarcomas in this location, but they can be differentiated by cytology and histology. Differentiation from an infiltrative lipoma is predominantly determined at the time of surgery. No tumors recurred in the median follow-up period of 17 months.
